The first video on the Pontiac Banshee Concept Replica!
• I Bought A Custom Buil...
My mystery auction Firebird which I've officially named the Banshee sounded pretty bad in the last video. I was able to free up the piston rings in the crate 350 engine and get it started but it sounded like it had low oil pressure. In this video, we continued working on the engine and find that it was likely misdiagnosed as having a bad engine, donated and then sold at the auction. I only paid $1,100 for this car and I was able to get it running well and driving for about $35 in parts! We take apart some of the engine, use a boroscope to investigate the cylinders and camshaft, we work on the distributor, take a look at the carburetor and overall just have a good old time working on the car in the garage. Oh and I find some really hacked up work that includes welding and the transmission. Of course, there are sound clips and a fun test drive. Enjoy and subscribe!

You have a much better on-camera presence and speak eloquently, you seem to have a vast knowledge on the tech, but aren't afraid to ask for your viewers when you're not sure. Great editing and solid production value. Just a pleasant watching experience in general. As far as the next build? Do something fun and silly like LS swap a Subaru Brat. I personally have never had a carb "start hard while cold"!! Say what you want about carbs, if you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, and you set up the choke correctly, it should start in a pump or two of the gas pedal and start just as fast in cold conditions!! BUT AGAIN you have to make adjustments to the carb and set both the idle adjustments and the choke adjustments properly!! Get it right, and a carb will start in cold climate as fast as anything else!!!

I don't have much experience with automobile carbs, but I have been blown away by how much mileage you can get on atv carbs just be cleaning them. I'm at high elevation and most of my carbs don't auto-adjust for altitude, so if I'm taking a machine up in the mountains, I have to stop every 30 minutes or so to open up the air bypass a little. If it had gas sitting in there for a year or so, then some of the moving parts to adjust the mixture are likely sticking and not letting enough air in. I love carbs for that, because they are mechanical computers. As long as all the pieces are there, they are very reliable. Modern computer controlled injection systems, while also fairly simple, are not as fun as I have had to replace control chips or whole ECU's, and those get expensive, especially if the car is less common.

These kids screw up so much stuff, but they've had the master techs available to bail them out and supply them with tools. The dealership I left from only has one senior tech left. @@Olds_Gold agree, but if you set idle then mixture then your idle will be to high so you turn it back down. If the mixture issue is the choke stuck closed, he messed with a fine idle then fixes choke then idle to high so he turns it back down. As long as it is running I would just start with the mixture issue first whatever the cause is, unless it won't idle at all then I might turn it up. It's all a little moot and I'm fussing about minutes of wasted time, but just a suggestion to check the choke or mixture issue before playing with idle which might actually be fine otherwise.

I have to say, I had a blast watching you go through the carbureted / HEI learning curve. One of the things that the HEI distributor needed on mine was replacing the original 1986 vacuum advance and fly weights, which were actually rusted and not moving. All of the things about your timing questions are spot on. They ARE touchy when trying to adjust the carb, the choke, get the proper timing setting and advance curve set up (it takes at least three hands to do all of that while maintaining the correct idle...), and I found it interesting that you didn't get oil spritzing across the garage when you had the rocker cover off without the handy-dandy oil deflector clips that you stick on each rocker ... so the hot oil doesn't shoot you in the eye..... LOL! Anyway, fun videos, and aside from not checking the tire pressures and whatnot because of youthful over-enthusiasm, great job of Sherlock Holmes deduction reasoning in solving the distributor issue, and, as a word of advice, after you get the old gas out, stick a can or two of some REAL octane booster in there (not the cheap crap that only raises it 1/10th of an octane point...), and that'll be a pleasant surprise too! Trust me!

I did mention in your first video, that cars can get tampered with at auctions (spark plug wires moved around). I have a bunch of experience with auctions all over northern Ill. So, you put the distributor back in and set it very close to No. 1, but then went on to other things. I never seen you set the timing correctly with a timing light. You could still be enough off, to cause a hard start. If you set it where it needs to be, you'll get a better start and may not even need to mess with the carb. So, DO THAT FIRST, or you may not get a good carb adjustment.

Another mans misdiagnoses is another mans treasure. My luck in this category. Nice Honda CBR 600cc. Man said he installed new plugs and wires after riding it one time the engine started knocking. He sold it to me for $300. I got it home and found he didn't tighten the plugs snug because they came loose. The engine was running but missing so bad the engine made a horrible knock. I tightened the plugs and the knock was gone. $5000 I ended up selling it for a year later after I was done with it. 3 atvs I have now the three different owners said they ran but the wiring is messed up. Paid less than $600 for all three. I rewired them and now I have $6000 in ATVs. Riding lawnmower. Paid $125 its worth $1500. @@kennethgumm6870 Timing 180 degrees off will never start. At 180 off you are trying to ignite the fuel with the exhaust valve closing, and the intake valve opening. The piston is changing direction, and will start pulling in the fuel mixture well after the spark has come and gone. It will however produce some exhaust backfires that can destroy catalytic converters. The most common cause of getting the ignition timing off by 180 degrees is installing a camshaft and a new timing chain and gear set with the dot on the crank gear on the top of the gear, and the dot on the cam gear at the bottom of the top gear. On a small block chev engine(actually any engine with firing order of 18436572), that is number 6 cylinder at TDC with both valves closed.

A quick check for a bent pushrod is to start the engine and adjust for a very low idle. If the pushrod is bent the rocker arm will move back and forth across the valve tip, not up and down but move in a lateral motion. This can be done with the engine not running too by spinning the pushrod with your fingers while the valve is closed.

You can read the codes with a paper clip. Short the A and B pins of the ALDL connector. These are the last 2 pins on the right top row of the connector (and if memory serves, the only place on the connector that has 2 pins side by side that have contacts in them. Once you short them together, turn the ignition to the "run" position (withouyt starting) and the check engine light will start flashing. It will cycle through the code "12" 3 times. (One flash, pause, 2 flashes = 12). Then, after the third cycle of "12", it will move on to any stored codes. It will flash a few times, pause, flash a few times. Count the flashes. For example, if it flashes 3 times, then pauses and then flashes 4 times, that would be a code 34. Once it cycles through all of the codes, it will flash "12" 3 times again and then start all over. Once you have your codes, turn the ignition off, pull the paper clip and get to work!

People always misinterpret the distributor install instructions. When they say the rotor should point to the No. 1 cylinder when that cylinder is on TDC, what they really mean is "point the rotor to the distributor tower or connector you will use for the No. 1 spark plug wire". You could, in theory, pick any one of the 8 distributor connectors to be the No.1 spark plug wire, set the distributor in pointing the rotor to that new selected connector, then follow the firing order for the remaining wires and it will run the same.

Good to see it running. If that is a goodwrench 350, it's probably a 4 bolt main block. It's a great engine, it takes a lot of abuse. Your on the right track with this. A tune up is a good start, tune the carb(cold start/high idle) and (once the engine is tuned) set the transmission kick down cable position. After all that, the car should rip. I had a setup like that in a late 80s caprice. It would burnout all 4 gears and chirp the tires when full throttle downshifting.

Interesting way to make a front pivot mount for the rear axle torque arm. The factory Camaro and Trans AM transmissions had special tail housings with the torque arm mount built in. But *welding* the fabricated mount to the car? That's just crazy nuts! It would be a very good idea to cut it off then weld in some nuts or use RIVNUT HRT inserts. Having that mount break off while going down the road would be a rather bad thing. Wouldn't pitch the car onto its nose but it could rip the rear axle out from under, along with some of that fancy fiberglass. That hatch is begging for some electric linear actuators to make it operable by mere mortals. Throttle body injection would be a good thing. Definitely want a kit that uses a Vehicle Speed Sensor. Jags That Run has a VSS with the mechanical speedo drive through it. They sell all the goodies for stuffing fuel injected Chevy V8's into old Jaguars. So much that could be done to turn this into a winning show car, or just fix the crappy bits so everything works and there's no gotchas laying in waiting to break, then flip it for a profit. If it was the fake supercar K.I.T.T. from that one episode, that would;ve really been cool.

Dont worry about base timing, set total timing at around 2500-3000 rpm to 34degrees. Plug vac, let warm up and bring rpm up to about 3k and set. If balancer isn't degree'd that far will need to mark or have adj timing light. You might have to change centrifugal springs in distributor stiffer or lighter to achieve total mechanical timing from that 2500-3000 rpm range. Then put vac gauge on and adjust carb idle circuit then tape vac gauge to window and take out and mash it and see how close to zero engine pull vac at wot and adj jets to achieve closest to zero reading, closer to zero means engine is running more efficient. Also make sure distributor vac advance is on ported vac not full manifold vac port so at wot it's running strictly on mechanical advancement not vac advance. Drivability wise you can see as much as 50+ degree advance at partial throttle street driving but under heavy loading you don't want to go much over 34 degree mark or will get detonation issues and could damage if goes lean

I put a Chevy Small Block and 700R4 into a 1986 Toyota 4Runner. I kept the 4 wheel drive. On a 4 wheel dyno I was getting 350HP to the wheels. I had a lot of issues with 700R4 Dipstick seal going bad every 6 to 12 months. I always knew when it went bad because it would shoot ATF onto the exhaust and you would get that paraffin smell. Occasional weeping from trans-pan no matter what brand of gasket I used. I ended up going to "The Right Stuff" black RTV and that solved the pan weeping. The speedo and governor would weep every now and again never could get that to stop. I used a Carter AFB with manual choke and mechanical secondary's. I live in Michigan and ran 5W40 Rotella T year round. Today I would use M1 0W40 unless it was an oil burner. My then girlfriend now wife drove it as well. I have been using M1 0W40 in 03 Camry, 07 Camry, 1995.5 Tacoma and 2008 Saturn Aura for about 10 years now and none of my car's or truck consume oil between my OCI's! IDLE SHOULD be between 600rpm and 900rpm depending on cam and stall converter in transmission. A good aiming spot for warm idle would be 700rpm in park 550 to 600 in gear again warm and around 12 degree's. That is ball park not cast in stone!

If you want to stick with the carburetor set up, get the spring and jet set for the Edelbrock 1405 or 1406 carburetor. I ran the same carburetor and it treated me very well. The 1405 kit is for the manual choke, but it has more spring, jet and metering rods choices. Just spin the electric choke until it acts how you want it--make sure it has power to the electric choke. My old 350 had a little bigger cam than yours and it really liked around 31 degrees of total timing after all advance is factored into the equation. You probably do not need to rebuild the carburetor, but it is easy to do so knock yourself out.

Warm motor, rev it up to 4000 (depending on the springs for the mechanical advance in the distributor, sometimes it stops advancing after 3500). Then rotate the distributor until it hits about 34 degrees. That's a pretty safe number. With good gas you might be able to do 35-36. This is the amount of degrees where the engine will make most power at WOT without the risk of detonation. It's significantly more important than the timing setting at idle!

With the electronic timing you set it to 0 and the computer will pull the timing. I am not entirely sure how this works for your setup as it looks like your distributor has the vacuum advance and your engine is carbureted (my 89 GTA and 90 Silverado have the electronic advance and fuel injection/tbi respectively). This code 12 means the diagnostic system is normal and will repeat itself continuously if there are no trouble codes. Otherwise, code 12 will flash 3 times before flashing the fault codes.

The main problem with Edelebrock carbs is the bushes for the primary and secondary shafts are made of rubbish material and wear out. The primary ones wear out first and as result the engine will never idle properly, the engine will suck air in through the gaps in the shaft and and upset the mixture and the shaft never returns to the same place when revved, giving it an erratic idle. Apart from that they are not to bad, the bushes can be replaced but it is a bit time consuming, I have only done it once, a long time ago and after that the engine ran great, prior to that the engine idle was all over the place.

A lot of shops can't be trusted with carburators and distributors these days. I went through it in a friend's RV, the PO spent a bunch of money at one or more shop. The main problem turned out to be just the fuel filter in the quadrajet. They did all kinds of shinanigans with electric fuel pumps and more.
