at 17 I left So California to live on some acreage my dad gave me. $500 was still owed on it. it was outside of Klamath Falls, Oregon. I left California driving a 61 Ford pickup. it was kind of on it's last leg but got me where I needed to go. everything I owned set on the passenger seat, not the floorboard or in the truck bed. I bought what I needed when I got to Klamath Falls. I like Robins approach to 44 items. this should be in every classroom. KZfaq and Robin can change the World, one minimalist at a time. I'm 65 now, on 10 acres in northeastern Nevada. where the Ruby Mtn's snow melt feeds the desert

i am watching this after losing everything i owned which was a lot, except a suitcase, to a hurricane. then i collected so much more in three years after migrating. clothes, shoes, body products, bags, etc. now i have lost almost all of it again, due to another migration gone bad due to covid. so i was sitting in my room missing everything i owned. and realized that i have lived almost 8 months with minimal. after watching this, i dont really miss them so much and i dont think i will collect so much anymore.

he is wrong. everything eventually decomposes. the plastic shorts will eventually decompose into a fossil fuel. the metal canister will rust and that rust will be part of rock formations waiting to be used by the next evolved species. every atom has its place. the universe always circles from cataclysms to zen. that will never change.

I understand where you are coming from. But people who are in debt they often have houses and cars and assets (with mortgages and payments) and so when I am describing my situation I am describing that it is quite different.

You're right. Someone.with $5000 is practically starting off fresh unless it's like the rich dad.poor dad that makes money from debt (I personally don't believe it though, because it causes people to just into debt if they make $0 from that - it's a gamble)

Born and raised in Puerto Rico as an American citizen from the island when I moved to the mainland, I was shocked by the individualism and materialism cult in the mainland. Listening to you embracing minimalism and addressing the importance of connecting with every human being it is inspiring. Precisely today my wife and I were discussing our move from Massachusetts to Florida and thinking if we had enough to move there. Watching this video provides not only inspiration but calmness. From a spiritual perspective God answers prayers and doubts in many ways and today He used you to give us hope that we have more than enough. Thank you for what are you doing for the planet!

Australian aboriginals had on average 130 personal items and carried no more than 10 kg on hunting trips so 44 things is pretty bloody good.

I’ve always believed that a bicycle is a worthwhile possession. I’ve been trying to replace our car with one for years. It adds a great deal of self sufficient mobility.

I have replaced my car with my walking stick my bike and public transportation. Just know that depending on where you live you will be the frog in a human game of frogger every time you cross the street.

I got rid of my car 11,5 years ago, and drove first 50cc-scooter, meanwhile 125cc (7000W). I hate when it snows, here in Germany, and I have to drive somewhere far, but other than that, no problems... Last Monday, i had to drive while it was snowing, happens rarely... I use 1-2 times, per year car-sharing or public transportation means, and my bicycle too. Plan to minimise 125cc-scooter-usage, by using a 1000W/30kg-electric-roller (just another extra-item, that will clutter my life)... But will never get rid of the 125cc, gazoline is in my veins, I enjoy urban-riding with 60mph, really chalenging by the vast amount of cars on the streets, far more dangerous than 150mph on the boring german highways... :-)

I'm living in Asia, but when I go back to Britain I plan to just have a bicycle. It will be harder in bad weather, but more fulfilling. I think Rob had a video before that mentioned a mountain bike with a trailer that could carry a lot. You'd be fit and save money.

I think that borders are a good tool to protect people from unnecessary danger, but if the danger is within the border then I would rather have a way to get out. Rob Greenfield inspiring how little you have. But I was wondering... you have a notebook, but no writing implement? How do you write in the notebook? When you do shower or swim, or wash your hands, how do you dry yourself? Do you shower and get dressed wet, or drip dry then dress? How do you peel (where necessary) and chop food to cook, or eat, or do you? I'd love to see videos where you go into that in even more detail. How do you travel so cheaply if that $5000 will get you through the entire year including food, accommodation and warmer clothes when you go to Europe or whatever you may need?

@@RobayatRahman I don't think he is. He's not showing any ads, he doesn't have affiliate links in the description and he's not selling any merchandise that's showing up under the video. Does KZfaq pay people just for having a lot of views to their video? I've never heard of people making money that way. I don't think KZfaq is going to pay people if they they don't need to, and I am sure that they have to have a way to opt-out of being paid even if they do.

I wanted to do this for so long. I let my parents talk me out of doing what I believed in and dreamed of and instead went to college where I dropped out after a year. I sank into a deep depression after that and then my older brother diy-died which sent me deeper into a depression/anxiety/agoraphobia coma for about a year. Crawling out of that to move on with my life I found myself in a relationship experiencing what I know now to be narcissistic abuse. I also got her pregnant and am now a single father of 2 year old twins of whom I luckily was able to get full custody. Anyway, all that time I felt I could not live the life I imagined for myself. Why? I had to get a job or go to college. I had to move out. I had to pay rent. I had to stay close to family. I had to get a car. I had to pay for insurance etc. I could not be free. I let everyone convince me that I was wrong, that taking my own path would be a horrible shameful mistake. Now that I have no personal freedom as a dedicated single father I realize how truly absolutely free I was all along. Now I'm only ashamed that I allowed myself to be brainwashed into thinking I had no power to decide what my life should be. You have the power. Your life is yours and no one else's.

So do what Rob said "Not trying to be perfect, just better" as a parent of two teenagers you would be surprised at how few possessions it takes to raise a family. Given the younger they are the more stuff they need it seems. My kids seem to recall and value the memories and experiences more than anything material we gave them. Good luck. So every time there was a cricket match or a nice movie going on the one channel they had back then, everyone in the village was invited to watch.

I am a travelling yogi....I have been saying it for a couple of years now, that all I need is my yoga mat, my toothbrush, my hairbrush, and my computer (plug too), my microphone (because right now I work with voice)....hmmm. It's interesting to me that you mention the weight on your back. I have moved 5 times in the last 6 months and each time I have had to carry my things on my back, and do multiple journeys. I literally felt the pain. I have been trapped in unsafe situations because of my stuff. That taught me about detachment better than anything else ever could.

I'm watching this after having to leave a second home within 4 years. First time I was able to move from one house to another, thanks to the kindness of family. This time I'm moving from what was my own home into a house with a relative. I'm having to downsize from an entire house, with outside storage, to one bedroom. This has been one of the most traumatic events in my life. While having those emotions I know there are certainly worse things in life. I realize I'm still a bit emotional after having several setbacks in my own health, death of loved ones and loss of financial independence. I did not realize I was so attached to things. Just having to go through such large volumes in short time has been overwhelming. As with most sour events in my life I'm determined to sweeten this up. I have been able to make some money by selling things that were just taking up space and not having to pay to store them. Watching this video has really helped me to look at my situation in a different light. Choosing this lifestyle has to be a bit less uncomfortable than being forced to. I regret I didnt choose it years ago. Not sure I could downsize to his level, but certainly is encouraging! Thanks for sharing!

I come back to this video a lot. I first viewed it a week after its release, and since then, I have been back and forth with regard to minimalism. At one point, I got everything I had down into a single 40L backpack. That was the happiest I have ever been in my life. Since then, I have let in substantially more (mostly books, some world coins, and clothing for cold climates and personal taste), as well as more tech related junk. This all caused me to become more depressed and weighed down. I am restarting my journey to a more free life. I came up with a saying that I think sums it up really nicely: Maybe it's not what we lose - what we choose to give up. Maybe it's about letting life in. Thank you Rob.

You are correct we are neither independent nor dependant on eachother, we are however interdependent. Everything that we own when we are dead and gone will surely belong to others anyways. THIS VIDEO IS SO HELPFUL ! As a woman I can say that YES you can live so simply and even more about beauty products ! I only use green clay as a beauty product, I put ZERO shampoo and I do it home ( i use eggs instead and it works wonders), everything i put on my skin is something I can eat , as simple as that. As for the rest, I have to say your video inspired me to declutter (again) my appartment. I thought about having friends at home so I wanted them to feel confortable and started buying things that I didn't need for myself. THANK YOU ! You're such an inspiration ! Bisous de France !

I just need a nice breeze, a cool drink, and birds chirping in the food forest I created. True happiness isn't found in things, its found in the reconnection back to nature. Look at my food forest videos and you will see how life changing it can be to dump all the junk that doesn't matter, and just start planting.

I truly admire what you've done and am in the process of convincing my husband to live simpler. I have a question, if I was your mother, where would I stay during a visit? In my son's small condo I sleep on a cot and if he didn't have a cot I would be thrilled to sleep on the floor just to get the chance to visit him. I wish more people recognized that the other spirit in a room is more important than any possessions owned by that spirit. You recognize that your worth is so much more than your possessions. Our worth is how we choose to connect with others. You, my dear young man are a rich man. You share your beautiful spirit so openly with a very closed society that is obsessed with their possessions. I did a long distance hike in 2016 and really enjoyed having only what I could carry on my back (plus what I had stored at my parents house). I remember my mind would sometimes go to think about those items that I had stored at my parents house and they... just didn't seem very important anymore. And watching your video brings back that feeling.

Some things you have I do not consider essential and some I have you would not consider essential, but it is so helpful to see how you do things because it provides a starting point, which is really the hardest part, at least for me.

Hey Rob, just want to tell you that whenever I am upset about anything personal or global I think about the freedom you have and then that puts my feelings in proper context. I am in my 2nd year of minimalism journey. I still make mistakes but I keep trying to live mindfully. When one lives with family sometimes it is not so easy to own absolutely less. Then there are the gifts and hand me downs. I have decluttered many aspects of life but unfortunately I am somewhere in between the social media bubble and community solidarity, I am working on my own. You are an inspiration 🙏
