Michele , from your opening remarks about learning from other peoples bad experiences, I was reminded of something Sam Levenson said, “You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.” Thank you for helping us on our watercolor journey. Edwin Scheibner

I remember specifically, many years ago, my 6th grade teacher asked us this question. I was never one to speak up, but I did this time…of course you learn more from the mistakes of others….WRONG. But even then I was thinking the logistics acquiring such knowledge. I’m pretty sure I ever spoke up again, but I did become a silent observer of others mistakes, lol.

My biggest breakthrough with watercolours was walk away and let it dry! So many times I've looked at a painting and thought oh my word, but when I've come back to it later when it is dry it's different to how I thought it was

Patience is not one of my strong traits, so I have 2 or 3 things on the go at the same time, usually including a coloured pencil piece which I can dip into while waiting for things to dry 😀

Your composition video really helped me so much! Yes, keep going! My uncle was a popular artist on the Virginia Eastern Shore of the US, when I decided to try watercolor (after using oil’s & acrylics for years) I was devastated at my results, he told me: “you will either love a painting or learn from it, those are the responses that count, don’t worry that you wasted paper & paint- ask what that painting taught you!” Thank you so much for sharing your advice & knowledge so clearly- I appreciate it!

hahahahaha I love Michele so much! (in a platonic way of course :D ) so funny, and such an incredibly good TEACHER. Sad to say, there aren't that many actual watercolor TEACHERS on youtube so my biggest tips would be to 1)practice art as much as you can (I need to do this more!) and 2) carefully evaluate the art channels you are watching. While many of them are entertaining or mesmerizing, very few of them will ever TEACH you anything!! And, I found one a couple days ago, that is positively harmful, throwing out all kinds of wrong advice just to stir up drama for the page views. Anyway, if you think a channel is good then ask yourself if your art improved while watching it. If that channel isn't helping your art to improve then at least understand why you're watching it, maybe it's soothing your art anxiety or maybe they have a good idea once in a while, or maybe some other reason. But, just don't watch that one as much and instead, browse the playlist of the channel which IS teaching you!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

I am a beginner and I have trashed so many of my painting attempts due to what was on the paper not measuring up, to what was in my mind, that you start thinking maybe this isn’t for me. This is the best and most useful info.! (And most of it I've never seen in any of the beginner courses I've watched). I get excited when I get to the ugly stage because it feels like I'm making progress! If I can't reach the ugly stage I always think I've done something wrong - which happens. Also, I have noticed I procrastinate because I want to think about how to make paintings look good, but then I realized I will never learn how to do that if I don't pick up the brush and practice, practice, practice ;)

However, I never knew about warm colours and cool colours or much about the colour wheel. Now, thanks to videos such as yours, I use a split palette and position my colours similar to the wheel. My breakthroughs came when you showed a video explaining about water control..my dilute paint on to damp paper caused so much havoc. And yes learning to let the painting sit propped up for a few hours when I thought I had finished showed me where I needed to add or alter things..that was truly a breakthrough. I kept all my paintings for that 1st year in an A4 folder so that I could look back one day and see how or if I had improved. Perhaps I should try those paintings again every few years…

@Leonie Cummin. I'm a retired nurse, and all my children have left the nest. I now have "time" on my hands to actually paint. My earlier years were just so full of being a mom, an RN, and endless housework/cooking. Now its MY TIME, and I'm truly enjoying watercoloring in such a relaxing way. I taught my oldest granddaughter (age 8) to paint at age 3, and she LOVES it. Last year I bought her her own professional brushes, paints, and paper. She actually sold a painting at age 4. She keeps her supplies at my house, because she has 2 younger sisters. I just adore painting with her. I'm hoping U also R enjoying painting, and are more relaxed than ever before. HAPPY PAINTING young lady!!!

When you said it looked like a little kid drew the first one ☹️😫 it just makes me feel more like shit about my own art because my art looks like a three-year-old drew it, your art look completely professional. I hope you can stop being so hard on yourself and your first toucan looks like a toucan that’s in the middle of being painted so I’m not for sure why you were so hard on yourself about that either.

Love your videos. I am still a bloody beginner, but i kearnz something cool yesterday. That is when „painting“ rocks etc with credit caed, it is important to use thick paint. If too wet, you only get a very narrow time video to get the desirable scratch results. Another thing i just figured out is that when drawing tree bark, apply multiple layers of color, and experimwnt with diagonal or longitudinal strokes. It is almost impossible to create the different textures by copying the details otherwise.

Michelle, once I learned to push through the ‘ugly stage’ of a painting I really started making progress. I have learned more from doing that than almost any other single thing. At that point I sometimes stop ‘worrying’ about the painting and just play around with it, which is a great way to learn. And then sometimes I end up with something nice. :) Thanks for a great video. I like the new glasses. Are your eyes different colors? It looks like you have one blue eye and one brown eye. How wonderfully unique. I just noticed that.

I'm laughing so much I decided to watch again. Yes I don't see why everything should just flow on the paper and then I suddenly 'see' something and hey there's a loose watercolour wow. No. I think artists make it LOOK like it happened that way. Draw if it takes you a week... I've been trying to draw a butterfly for a week now 🤣. And yes, the beautiful blank page, can I just frame that? Teddy bear cat 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm continuing with my butterfly...hopefully I will still be able to make the card I need. I shall push through the ugly stage when I get to it. Thank you so much. I so needed this today🙂

Another fun video. I am looking forward to your pigment video! Color mixing/ matching has always come naturally to me also so I am looking forward to the science behind it. Your composition and drawing videos have helped me greatly. Your examples of the ugly stage were great!

In an earlier video, you recommended that we get a pink. I purchased Winsor and Newton's Opera Rose, and I really didn't think I'd use it much. Pffft - wrong! I use it to mix all the time. I also use Buff Titanium frequently, an opaque-ish cream with a green undertone, and the unfortunately fugitive Moonglow. I'm very interested in learning about pigment #'s. Breakthrough moment for me? Life changed when I switched to good paper. There's no going back. Thanks for the video, Michele!

Thanks Michele the composition part was brilliant thank you. AZ nd so too was the " ugly stage of our drawings and God knows believe me I' ve had quite a few. Some I pushed along with and some looked so awful I thought " NO NOT A HOPE IN HELL" and binned them straight away in frustration but . I was sorry after. Sorry about some of them because I had a few ideas after of how to "pull them out of the fire" as they say. I had ideass of how to improve them and turn it around but too late. I never got round to doing them again after. This was a reminder and thank you you so much for this because I needed that reminder. Not to throw them away. Keep going and if I still screw up not to throw them away. There might still be something even some part on some of it I can use again. When that fails. Mm yeah it's time to say goodbye alright. I love how your cat and the bird turned out after your " ugly stage" as you call them, they came out very well in the end. It gives me some kind of hope and incentive now to keep going and not throw them away. And I love those glasses by the way. Very sassy. 😄. And your sense of humour . You never fail to make me laugh. Thank God my postman doesn't come round here till about 2 or 3 in the afternoon so my eye bags are well picked up and shoved into place by then. Along with anything else that's headed south. If I have a really bad day I open the window and get him to hand me the post in the window while I hide behind the curtain. I tell him I lost my keys. All he sees is my hand. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Come Christmas I don't see him till 5 or 6. Even better again.🤣🤣🤣🤣. It's dark that time.!! Back to what I was saying. I'm looking forward to Christmas and your video about pigments. Have a very happy Christmas Michele you and your family. Much love a d God bless you. Susan xxxx❤❤❤❤❤🤗😘🎄⭐⭐⭐💐🎨💕💕💕💕👍🙏🙏🙏

Loved this video, the point about pushing through the ugly stage really resonated with me. I would also add, if it's not looking as good as you'd like, walk away and come back a few hours later. Quite often the painting will look much better than you thought originally, or if not that, you can see just what's wrong with it straight away.

Hi, I’ve become confused now you’ve helped, I wondered why some colours were muddy, I thought with 3 primaries I could mix all colours, well as you’ve explained colour pigments & greens are important! Thanks for all the explanations! Also like the fact you show pics that CAN improve but, are “ugly”, I tend to put them to one side & look at later with a clearer mind.
