2021 was not nearly as fruitful as I would have liked with a lot of my sports card investments. In this video, I share with you my worst card investments of the year as well as the learning lesson I got from each one so hopefully both you and I won't make my mistake.

Lots of lessons learned this year. #1 mistake is to copy what influencers were investing in. All of my own picks were right on and made money. Biggest loss was Kelenic and will also be holding McCaffrey for another year. Really can't go wrong collecting/investing your own team either, especially when they lead their division.

I didn’t sell any of my Deshaun Watson cards. During the trade deadline, his prices started to pick up on the potential Trade (further supporting your point about fans/flippers). Once he gets traded, prices will go back up.

Lets c, Pascal Siakam did not work out. Drew Lock didn't work out, fake Kobe auto (plus grading) did not work out Saquon Barkley didn't work out, Deshaun Watson didn't work out and grading @ $150 a card did not work out. But overall really great 👍

Don't worry about it too much, like this guy said this stuff happens to athletes from time to time. Think of all of the athletes over the years that had 10+ women accuse them off sexual misconduct. Such is life!!

1. Graded Base 2. Watson 3. Watson 4. Watson 5. Watson J/K! All jokes aside, we all are going to make mistakes. What matters is if you learned something. For me, I pivoted in early-2021 due to the fact that I wasn't sending cards out to grade and I could see that selling base cards raw did not have an ROI to speak of. I switched to serial #'s and parallels; both of which was a good move. I would say the big mistake I made was early on, and that was picking up some C and B-level players where I overestimated the amount of hobby love. Outside of that, I've been very fortunate. Probably would have made a bunch of mistakes had I gotten into investing/flipping graded cards.

Great stuff man, I bought a bunch of Baker, Josh Allen and Kylers this summer and it’s all down if that makes you feel any better 😆 buying more vintage into 2022 and really enjoying the nostalgia that comes with it. Plus, there’s only one RC to chase for most part. Thanks for the content this year

Definitely been a tough year to try to sell cards...at least after the first couple months. The problems with the economy and inflation are not helping

A learning lesson is to create a cost basis that allows for injury to occur without devastating results - it felt as if you didn’t learn enough with so many similar ish losses - what i got from the video was your lesson was to create a contingency plan if investments will take longer than normal - that’s fine but what about learning to sell at break even to keep moving - mccaffrey is a known injury risk so any windows for him should be taken. Also I thought the backup QB PSA 10 was a wonderful possible learning lesson that the downside on a base psa 10 of a player on the fringes of the NFL can not only lose 75% of value but he also isn’t worth the 40$ buy in price almost ever because that already has the perception of a probable good performance 20$-25$ As the entry point would seem more reasonable as a flier play

Bought a PSA 9 Olajuwon myself recently. With vintage its longer term investment strategy. The pop count only went up 1% in the last 2 months vs 2% in the prior 2 months. I expect it to continue to slow and then prices should resume going up. They seem to have stabilized in the $600-800 range.

Bought some nice Zion RPAs earlier this year. It's beginning to sound like he might not even play this season. His cards are tanking, and he looks like he eats at McDonalds three times a day. Can the Pelicans organization get this dude a chef and a personal trainer??? Uhhhhg.

Nice video, I think Watson still has a chance of returning to the NFL next year as he is still very young, also your point on allocating say 10% of your "portfolio" to high risk-high return prospects is a very good point. Like you said "fan"="fanatic" so by definition is it very very difficult to predict which cards will gain value, I mean there are A LOT of people who PC unknown hometown heroes that they grew up with and would pay a premium to get their cards... Bottom line for me is allocate 80% of my money to PC cards and 20% to having fun (ripping wax, Bowman 1st prospects, an occasional break, etc.)

As a Carolina Panther fan, it was the Sam "I Am Not" Darnold that burn me the most. Not just cards but signed memorabilia too. In good news, after Cam was cut from Pats I was able to pick up some of his rare and pristine cards at a great price.

Nice takeouts, thanks for the work! My worst investment 🤔 I bought a Messi rookie (Barca champion set) raw at their pick, once graded maybe a 5 or 6 best. And paid 360 $ 😰 looking at their price now I could buy them for half the price in that condition 😅

Worst investment was Several Trae Young and Luka RCs at the end of last season. They all pretty much halfed in price. Best Investment was putting most my money into Low pop Pre War/Vintage between 1910-1960 that is still holding price or has risen a good amount.

Bought a Blue Legacy LSU Joe Burrow Rookie Card # 3 of 54. Then he had that knee injury last year. Didn't know if he could make a come back. Turned out fine. I'm in the Stock Market, Collect old Toys especially Rare Star Wars figures, collect Autographed Sports Memorabilia And buy and sell Sports Cards. Sometimes Comics.

I put in a $1600 offer for a PSA 10 Deshaun Watson Silver Prizm RC at the peak, and right before all the news broke about the non-football stuff, but thankfully it got declined. I invested in a bunch of Chuma Okeke and Jaxson Hayes Prizm rookies, and I don't think I'm getting that money back. Outside of that, with patience I've been able to get out of most bad / emotional investment choices.

Y'all should ask me what I'm buying. Then don't buy it and you will do well. Anything I buy it seems this year within two weeks the player is either hurt or just has terrible performances. Started last year with Ohtani actually. Has to get surgery within a week of me buying several high end rookie cards. Lamar Jackson, Pete Alonso, Trevor Lawrence, Donovan Mitchell, Justin fields. List goes on and on. I think the world series ruined it for sports cards. Can't even name but one player on the Giants or Astros. Altuve. So it was just so boring that people lost interest in baseball

So far my disastrous mistake was buying up a few Jake Cave RC autos. That puddin head Houdini had talked him up. But i got em raw and cheap. And also, Tatis' RC's were dirt cheap before Covid hit last year and I should have loaded up on those instead but I had just gotten back into the hobby after a 20 some year hiatus and didn't really know that much about him at the time. I buy raw cards. I don't mess around with graded cards.

I understand all of your justifications except the Stidum!!!!! I kindly say that was a bad choice lol , enjoyed the video we all have a few . I bought a Mbappe prizm rc psa 9 refractor red white blue for 1200 I think its worth like 5 or 6 hundred now . Also 2018 Ronaldo topps chrome refractor psa 10 for 1200 now worth I think 600

I bought a PSA 10 Devon Booker last February. Also, invested heavy in Jamal Murray RC. I have several Ruggs cards, too. I think Booker and Murray I will hold, but probably won’t get all of my money back.

I did make a nice trade for a 1957 Mickey mantle in march. Traded a 2020 Topps sapphire Ohtani and a high tek Ohtani rookie. Then ohtanis cards started tanking right after that while the mantle had held his value

Been doing this for many many years and i can say it's been ok but not great. My best investments by far have been anything silver not just prizm amd optic but mosaic one and one and hoops numbered. Only silvers that haven't done well have been hoops premium which has been my worste investment ever and flux silver but I'm holding caus I know hoops premium will go up for the mere fact it's the first year of the set they look amazing also hoops is a huge set in the hobby and the premium version is much better quality obviously but 1 thing people are not realizing for the future is hoops premium was the first set with bubble pictures which will surely be realized eventually

bought a kyler red wave prizm psa 9 last year in november for $850 during his peak, and even tho he's having a much better season now and the cardinals made the playoffs for the first time in 6 years, its only going for $500

My worst investment: Bagley. Although didn’t lose much as I bought them when they were already down, probably worthless today so I may just give them away. 😂 I did purchase a couple of Luka RC autos for my PC, value has gone down like everything else but I don’t mind as I PC Luka and they are long term holds.

And I’ll gladly take those Bagleys. I just collect for personal and he’s playing well for my hometown pistons. Got a psa 10 rookie for like $15.00. That’s why I don’t get the rookie hype, most of them don’t pan out to be great or it takes a loonngg time for people to appreciate them. Look at guys like Ben Wallace. An nba career can take years to carve out a role and create any value in the rookie.

I think it's weird that people will pay more for a prism refractor psa 10 than a red refractor /5 in a psa 9 for the same player. I guess a honus Wagner in a psa 5 is worthless then

Worst card purchase are repack products junk slabs at 800 a box with an average of now with values so low and lots of this purchased when the cards were higher value I averaged$ 50 a card out of a $2400 purchases for 9 cards. So yeah repack products are now dead do not buy. Even worse than they were before.

My advice is only buy numbered and silver holo cards. My advice buy Tom Brady silver and numbered cards. No way you lose money on Brady stuff. Also buy Mike Trout silver and numbered cards. You will not lose money, Also there is serious talk about Trout playing for the Dodgers. Also Jared Steidman is going to back in the NFL. Jake Fromm is starting for the Giants, and Ian Book is starting for the Saints. Also Tom Brady's father net worth is 3.1 Billion Dollars, that gets a lot of Super Bowl rings. Deshaun Watson holo silver prizm rated rookie, he will be back in the league next year, Mike Vick started in the NFL and he murdered dogs my friend. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah my friend.

Yeah there are just too many of this card. Similar to Barry Sanders topps traded PSA 9. I practically had to give that card away. I think $100 is a good price point for that Kobe PSA 9.

The worst investment is investing in graded cards. The slab market is only going to get more saturated. All you're really getting is a "professional" opinion on a cards condition, which is mostly inconsistent due to human error. Maybe AI will help, but by the time that gets fully incorporated there will just be too many slabs in the market. Just my 2 cents.

I think a lot of people feel the same way. Raw card sales are actually doing very well for me on eBay. It’s like people would rather pay for a nice raw card instead of a PSA 9 even at these cheap prices.
