September 12th always holds a special place in my heart because it is the date of my Italian anniversary! I can't believe I moved to Rome 5 years ago, it feels like just yesterday. Ciao y'all! My name is Kenya, and I'm an American living in Rome, Italy sharing my experiences and travels while living abroad. After beginning my obsession with Italy at the young age of 9 years old and visiting for the first time during a study abroad/Erasmus vacation about 5 years ago, I hatched a plan that somehow... someway... Congratulations! I went to Italy right before the the pandemic! Italy is life! Both me and my husband fell in love with Italy! We are currently saving to purchase a property there, even though we just closed on the new build in the US! I’m working on my Italian so when I go back I can speak much better! So glad I found your channel just I just subscribed looking forward to seeing all your content past and future! 💕

Ciao Kenya, congratulations on your five year anniversary. You were great help to me when I was preparing for my study visa, I reached out to you after discovering your video and I really appreciated everything you did for me. Unfortunately school didn’t work out for me - I was not a fan of my program nor the Italian university system, but most importantly I realized that I was much more passionate about improving my Italian than actually studying for my courses. During my one year in Italy, even though it was full of many lows, there were so many beautiful memories I made and I appreciate the way I was able to grow. I would never have known what path is right for me if I hadn’t made the leap. Hopefully my partner and I (5 years together today, 2 years separated thanks to Covid ) will be reunited soon and receive the K1 visa for him to come here. Wish we could say Italy was in our future, but at this point we cannot see ourselves thriving there.

Thank you, Kenya and congratulations! Have a question for you: my daughter is planning to start her full-time undergrad degree at John Cabot Uni, which means she will be in Rome for 4 years. Since apartments in Trastevere where JCU is located are quite pricey and the school residencies even more so, does it make sense to consider less expensive areas that have easy connection to Trastevere? And what are those areas? Thanks!!!

Thanks so much! I always feel like the connections to Trastevere are not the best (not a really convenient metro there, but they do have a tram). If you can and your budget allows, I really say splurge on living in Trastevere or at least find an apartment within a 15-20 minute walking distance to the uni. Rome is meant for walking! Especially in the city center.

I know that you stared in Italy on a student visa but may I ask what type you converted to?

From study to a type of work visa. You actually have 1 year after graduating from an accredited program in an Italian university to look for a job, so in the meantime you have to apply for PERMESSO DI SOGGIORNO PER RICERCA LAVORO, which allows you to legally live in Italy in the meantime. Hope that helps!
