The problem with "eat when you're hungry" is blood sugar spikes and dips. I'm not hungry first thing in the morning and have skipped breakfast most of my life, but now I've got blood sugar issues, and I tend to binge on crap later in the day. So now I have to force myself to eat breakfast so I'm not eating it later in the day or hungry. If I wait until I'm hungry, I can't get full until I've overdone it. So I have to make sure I eat breakfast so I'm never *really* hungry, I'm just eating as a prescription.

Yeah I have a similar problem because the medication I take regularly sorta dulls my hunger, so I can sometimes go the whole day without feeling hungry until all of a sudden I'm nauseous cause I haven't got any fuel left and it hurts more than anything. So then I eat fast crap because I don't want to wait while I cook, and if I forget and can't eat then and there the nausea gets worse and I don't feel like eating much of anything. I usually notice I'm on a cycle of this and need to figure my shit out when I start to get dizzy spells as I get up. I lost some weight pretty quickly in the last bout of lockdown because of this. I wasn't doing much physically so I would just forget to eat.

I definitely relate to the mental health benefit of having a structured routine of exercising and eating enough and well enough because you want to improve at whatever you're doing in the gym or with your body. It generates motivation, and it certainly helps to have a friend or two to keep you active and accountable. When I'm injured and can't climb or I'm swamped with assignments and exams due to poor time management it really takes a toll on my well-being and I tend to slack on everything. Congrats on getting back on track mate.

Keep in mind that even if these are small workouts at first, with time, the habit is created and the results will be there. Change habits is so hard, I was and still fighting against it. Thank you for the motivation guys !

Exercising for mental health, is what my psychologist told me when I had a massive depression. Changed my life forever. I feel SO much better immediately after a training session and it keeps me going even when times are difficult. I feel happier and more energetic than ever and I don't even train like 6 days I week. I train about 3 times a week and that's more than enough for my goal of having a healthy mind. the greatest thing is that my body has changed so much and that wasn't even the goal. So not only do I feel better overall, I also find myself just looking a lot better which boosts my confidence. A win, win, win situation, just from taking on a habit of exercising three times a week.

Hey Nile, I totally relate to not being able to get enough food down and not being able to gain weight. I have a lot of anxiety and moving my body is crucial for my mental health - however the eating at a surplus is really fuckin hard but just as important. I love to see your success in it. Lots of love

I just want to say thank you, you've not shied away from talking about your mental health struggles. I am always inspired by the journey you are on. To hear you all talk about the little things that can either help with weight loss or weight gain, makes so much sense.

I used to really struggle with feeling sick before eating due to anxiety, I almost had to retrain my brain and mentally tell myself “I’m so excited for this meal, it’s going to taste soo good, nurish my body” blah blah for ages. It did work though.
@millacabral94752 жыл бұрын
It's crazy how that happens. I have a friend that wasn't able to eat properly for weeks because her brain would freak out as she was about to consume food, probably because she had had an eating disorder a few years before, so that anxiety must have crept back with other stresses.

You got this! I'm trying to get my food and sleep under control, and starting to get more active (hate the word exercise). It was recommended to me to get a more regimented schedule where I wake up, eat my meals, and go to bed at approximately the same time to help control my migraines and vertigo. We can do this. ❤

I have to track my calories for a few reasons: - I can eat enormous amounts of food without even noticing. Tracking helps me with portion control. - I forget I have eaten things unless I track them before I eat them, so without tracking I can think I've had a good day, when it's actually been bad. - On days when I do indulge, I pig less if I'm tracking. I may go over my calories by a few hundred, rather than a few thousand. - It makes me more conscious of my food choices. Do I really want cheese in the sandwich, or would cottage cheese taste as good, but save me some calories for later? As you might have guessed, eating too little is a foreign concept for me. 😉
@Ailieorz2 жыл бұрын
All of this. I don't track my food anymore because I know how much it is. I eat roughly the same thing every day, so I know what I should have for dinner if I get a burger for lunch etc. Just knowing makes a huge difference

Let's not also forget those that suffer with some sort of food addiction or disordered eating. A drug addict or alcoholic can avoid their desired addiction, but you have to eat to live yeah?

Great that you talk about the connection between mental and physical health!!! I do think it is also about how nutritious a meal is, not just how many calories it contains... you can eat the "right" amount of calories with chocolate and chips, still it won't be good for you! Leaning the nutritional value of foods might be as important as to know how many calories they have...

Love hearing all of this. I've been on a modified version of the keto diet for just over 2 years now, and at first it was about the weight loss (I was 95kg when I started and got down to 65kg after 18 months, now I'm steady at 65kg) but I was told to go on the diet by my doctor because I was pre-diabetic with my insulin levels. Now after 2 years we have figured out that I am insulin resistant so I will be on a modified diet from a nutritionist for the rest of my life. The hardest thing for me was that I could no longer drink cider (my favourite alcohol) but I have found so many alternatives, including non alcoholic wines and beers. I live in Australia and when I started the diet, I barely ate anything because there weren't many foods geared towards the keto diet, but in the last two years after lots of researching and talking to other people on the diet, I have found alternatives for almost everything I used to eat, there are keto pastas, keto breads, keto anything, and it's incredible to see the change in the market. I know there is a lot of stigma surrounding the keto diet, but I have found it to be the best thing for me, physically and mentally as well. I still struggle with my insulin resistance but I'll get it under control eventually :)

For anyone else with pets or kids, it's easier sometimes to take care of other people than it is to take care of yourself. I find it helpful to think of taking care of my nutrition and fitness as important as it is to walk my dog or for a parent to take their kid to school or whatever. Sometimes it's hard and you don't want to, but you do it anyway because that pet or child is depending on you. You depend on yourself too, so eat well and grow your fitness even when you don't feel like it!

@hailhummus2 жыл бұрын
While the intention behind this is well-meaning, I think perpetuating the idea that being muscular and ripped = fit is problematic. It's fine if you actually are unhealthy to want to change that, but this is sorta saying that there is a 'standard' for what healthy is and looks like, which I disagree with completely. I feel like Carlton's approach seems more holistic and balanced.
@thewanderingwolf71162 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with that at all. As a former athlete, he can say he looks unhealthy compared to the condition he was in. They're promoting the right message - just don't read too literally into it.

I appreciate how Luke mentioned don't go crazy on counting calories. When I was young, I struggled with anorexia. Then as an adult, I started excessively tracking my calories and started to slip back into anorexic ways. Just make a conscious effort of doing better
@5142Katie2 жыл бұрын
Just to add also, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn even when doing very little. Don't just go by what the scales say, go by how you look and feel instead. I ditched the scales when I was weight training because I wasn't seeing much difference (muscle weighs more than fat), but my clothes were a lot looser, I was more toned and I lost inches all over (except legs, they just seem to get bigger no matter what I do lol)

I hate breakfast can't eat in the morning, makes me sick. I'm ready to eat two hours after I'm up for the day. My Problem is getting a personal trainer, I'm getting knocked back because I'm an amputee, apparently I'm to much of risk
@robertwright83062 жыл бұрын
To add to their message, if you eat 200-500 calories below your maintenance level but all you're eating is bread and candy (aka Carbs) then sure, you may lose weight. But guess what!? You'll also be losing muscle as well. Because you are not supporting your muscle mass with enough dietary protein as you lose weight. Losing weight is technically a slight stressor on your body. So if you are going to apply this slight stressor, you need to make sure your muscle mass has what it needs in good supply so it can properly heal from the work you are putting it through. Your muscle mass is the driving force behind your metabolism. Lose muscle = lose metabolism. That's why these guys are sitting in front of the camera eating chicken and veggies. If people are going to make content around the science of nutrition, I wish they would take a few more moments to explain this key point. Even vegetarian and vegan athletes stick to this fact.

Lockdown for me was a huge turnaround in realising I can control my weight I went from 14stone to 12 stone in 4 months and gained a small amount of muscle but what I'm now struggling with is gaining muscle and that's with me going to the gym 3 times a week so I've now lost the mental side of going to the gym and I've also had covid have you got any gym tips or meal tips that would help gain muscle?

Can I just add, ladies, getting bigger is ok for us too. Stop looking at Hollywood and thinking you have to be stick thin AND be able to do push-ups with chains etc. Forget it. We can be thick and muscular too, we don't need to look like twigs. If you want to get stronger, train for it and let your body grow to be as good as it can be.
