Great video. I liked the subtle note about how each project has a lot of steps to take so the first step is to be clear about them so you’re aware of the tendency to overfill the plate.

I’m so glad I found you Caren! What a resource you are!!! I’m 54 & was diagnosed at 52 - still learning & adapting to how my brain works. AND appreciating that I’m not alone in this & that there never has been anything wrong with me - my brain just works differently. I appreciate all your positive messages around that idea. Thank you!!!

My month would be amazing if I could do a declutter of my house and clean up my garden beds. I like your system and use something similar. The issue I have is follow through due to energy level fluctuations and feelings over overwhelm, plus even when I do accomplish things, the feeling of accomplishment is pretty short lived so it doesn’t motivate me to keep the momentum. But it’s a work in progress.

That lack of reward is related to low dopamine. Are you trying to do too much?

A software isn't going to help you set goals. That's an inside job! Did you see the template I offered in this video? It's free and it can help you set realistic goals.

I've got a problem that only an ADHD coach can address, but I'm too poor to afford a coaching session. So if you could either reply or make a video out of this problem I'd be in your debt. So I chose a career in software development before I knew I had ADHD. I chose that career only because of the money and the belief that I could do it. It's been around 8 years since I decided to pursue that career and although I've learned a lot, the act of programming still doesn't excite me. Do I abandon the career path that I owe student loans for since I don't have the degree? Do I abandon the career path because it has never given me those dopamine doses? I think I could force my way to complete my degree and I think I could force my way into a job as a web developer. Do I keep going or switch to something else that does provide the dopamine my ADHD brain needs?

Is there a way you can dabble in other careers without commiting?
@CarenMagill
@CarenMagill 3 ай бұрын
If I were you, knowing what I know now, I'd look at this differently. I am assuming you are not yet done with your education. I'd finish that degree so you have something to show for your efforts and money. Then look at what you learned as a skill set rather than a life-long career path. If being a developer doesn't jazz you, what does interest you? Can you bring those highly valuable skills into it? For example, if what you really wanted to do was something in communications or project management, you would be highly employable in roles that interact with engineering or programming because you have that technical understanding which will make you stand out. Does that make sense? Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Get clear on what you want, but bring those skills with you. Also, challenge yourself to complete your degree. It's good for your self-confidence!!!!

@@CarenMagill Thank you so much for the advice! What you said about bringing in those skills into a different career did make sense. I just need to figure what that'll be and give myself some grace along the journey. Action items: I emailed the STEM career advisor at my old college -Get together a list in Notion of different careers that CS degrees are useful in -Stream study sessions on Twitch 2 days a week -Plan coding projects for those streams while at work (set reminder for this) -Once I have a career in mind reapply to school -Set a strict bedtime -Meal and clothes prep once a week during stream -Continue to improve posture so I can run in good form -Start running 2+ times a week I just included the action items so that you'd know I was taking your professional advice to heart. It sucks that society is structured around these hoops we have to jump through, but I'm glad there's people like you helping ADHD people jump through them.

I agree with Caren. I’ll add that a lot of jobs don’t need a specific degree, they need experience. For example, I have a degree in vocal performance opera. Is my full-time career in that area? No. I also feel like college is a totally different experience than work environment. You’re in a different zone in your head. There is not as much studying in an office-type job. I don’t know how to say this, but you don’t always get a dopamine rush, or hit from the work you do. For example, as a writer, I have to rely on other strategies like meditation, exercise, journaling, and mental health, etc. Being a successful published author includes a ton of things that aren’t necessarily fun for an ADHD brain with executive dysfunction-but I have strategies to get them done. (And they change all the time too so I have novelty!) Plus, as you age, you gain more strategies to help you deal with work stuff. What struck me first in your post, is that just because you have ADHD doesn’t mean you won’t be a good software developer. It’s also hard to know if it’s the JOB that’s causing what you called a lack of dopamine, or it’s some thing else in your life. This channel is amazing and I also recommend healthy gamer GG‘s guide to mental health. (And free videos here) It’s surprisingly affordable for the average person. Hope that helps.

One more tip: ask yourself what you would do if you didn’t get paid to do it? And no, I don’t mean lays around on the beach, because even doing that you’ll eventually get bored, and you’ll start wanting to do things. Avoid cynicism and dig deep. For example, what do you get hyper focused doing?

First: - WOW! Pink Floyd!!! What a good taste, Caren! 😉👌 Second: - You are coming to visit my country?! 🇵🇹 WOW! 😊 What a small word full of coincidences... And third (Pink Floyd + Traveling): - Do you know David Gilmour is planning a Tour for September after the release of a new album? 😉 He is already selling tickets for Rome & UK. From your video... one question: - Did you think about doing a TedX presentation? You are terrific, your previous video was (another one) amazing! For me, for example, you could turn it into a live presentation (½ the work already done). You'd be much better than most... and that could bring more attention to your channel. Oh... and you could organize your amazing content to create a book (½ the work already done too). A book is a good passive income and another way to bring more attention to your channel. My thoughts on Notion: - Very interesting your organization! I had mixed feelings of crippling anxiety just imagining all the questions I'd had to answer, and thinking about it. But diving in... some are actually very important to shake off the ADHD. And I already noticed the amazing versatility and freedom of Notion. At the same time, I have been learning some stuff about PowerPoint and... I'm considering using it to make a sort of engaging and exciting To-Do-List in the shape of a Presentation. I've found out that PowerPoint's amazing creative features are sparking my motivation... even though it is not a planning software.
