Love this series so much I clicked the vid instantly! I am not a pro, but a hobbyist photographer and your tips have been so helpful. I have a 16 month old and did her first year yearbook and it took me a long time so I want to learn some restraint and try your tips of organizing and editing as we go month by month. A video or Q&A on the designing process would be incredible. I also want to aim for a more artistic/curated story of of year going forward for this year. some of my Q's might be: How many pictures are the max for a spread. Tips on composition. Tried and true layouts that you might repeat through your book. Even just seeing a few more examples of your spreads would be so interesting!

Yay!! I've been looking forward to this video SO much! I JUST finished organizing all of my photos, which is a project I've been working on for many months! I'm finally ready to start building my albums, and I couldn't be more excited! This video is perfectly timed, thank you!

Can I just say, the BEST visual, for me, in this video was the shot at the beginning of all her books because I saw the difference in sizes and THAT encourages me - that my yearbook doesn't have to be Massive. I've always been intimidated by the thought that a yearbook has to be big. I have only just started shooting more at home but not nearly enough to fill a big yearbook - I've had some months where I didn't shoot at home at all. A smaller one that grows as I and my family do, is much more approachable. *Yes, she said those little ones were travel books but, if I can be honest, that would probably be roughly the size of a yearbook for me right now.*

I LOVE this so much! I’m in the process of scanning my old childhood photos and turning them into books with stories connected with the images so my brother and I can experience our life in a way that flows. Bless my moms hearts but in our old albums on one page I would be like 7 and the next page 2years old so organizing all of these has been quite a process!

Greetings from Southern Indiana! I've enjoyed your series about family legacy books. I'm retired and I've traveled a bit. I use 3-ring binders with different pages that will take 4x6, 5x7 and 8.5x11. This also enables me to add text about the trip. I have a color printer that can print the photos. (Not too keen on the price of the ink!) This gives me an album before the next trip. BTW, one of my favorite places to visit is not far from you - Williamsburg, mainly Colonial Williamsburg.

Katelyn~ What is your secret for getting yourself into the photos? How do you set up your camera and settings? What lens do you typically use for your family shots? I would love to get in the photos more as a mom so that my kids remember that "I" was actually there with them and not just "behind the camera" all the time. TIA

Because I learned about your family albums last year I did my own for the past two years. I freakin LOVE them. Now this being my first intentional (at least trying to be intentional lol) year of shooting knowing I will make a family album at the end I'm wondering if you would be willing to share how you keep everything organized? Do you just keep a folder of each month and then upload each of those folders to Smart Albums at the end of the year? I would also love to learn about designing albums...any tips and tricks you may have. :D

Hi Katelyn! I'm interested in how you design your album cover. 1. Do you design it in Smart albums, Photoshop or another program? 2. Aside from the spine, do you include your family name and year on the front of the cover? 3. Do you use just one image for the front and one for the back? Or do you create a collage?

I'm absolutely loving this idea... Katelyn, just another encouragement for a video on the design process. Your books look amazing and I would love to get proficient both for my own family and for our clients (we are just getting started professionally). This would be an amazing differentiator... The "big camera" now has an official place on my desk, within easy reach. :-) One question in the meantime... where can I learn more about the different types of books? A "lay flat" vs the other types? I want to put together a book for our personal wedding. The images have sat gathering electronic dust, which is a shame. :-)

On blurb I can only fine 30 x30 in sizes ?? ( I thought yours were 20x20???.), Can i ask what quality of paper do you use ???. Thanks so much.

I am overwhelmed with my pictures. I used to make scrapbooks but now all my photos are on thumb drives and an external hard drive. I’m just learning Lightroom. How can I organize them without being even more overwhelmed?

I really struggle with pulling out my DSLR in my day to day family life. I feel like my family becomes stiff and uncomfortable when the big camera comes out....lol ...I need to do a better job of making that a natural part of our family story. I imagine, after following so many #KJALLACCESS videos, that you are innately building spreads as you photograph the kids...you talk about doing this so much when shooting engagement sessions or weddings, that I'd bet it comes second nature to you, even as you're shooting simple family outings and activity shots. I'd be curious to know how you deal with (or do you even deal with?) the various color changes that happen throughout the year in the images you're capturing? Do you build in transition pages, so that if you're shifting from, say a late summer lake family trip (light and bright) to a fall shoot (where the colors may be darker) do you do anything special to handle the color saturation changes with the different seasons so that there is consistency in your album or does the consistency rule go out the window over such a long period of time?

I feel like I'm behind. My oldest is almost three. Would you go back and make older yearbooks or just move forward and do it from now on?

How do you do a 20 x 20 in Smart Albums to transfer to Blurb when Blurb does not offer a 20 x 20 but largest size is 12 x 12 or 13 x 11?

I have tried ordering through blurb and can never get the upload to look right. I’ve uploaded a pdf and it always breaks the spreads up in a weird way. How do you upload to blurb to make sure the spreads look right?
