Hi there . Your fish and plants will be healthiest when your water is either neutral (a pH of 7.0) or slightly acidic (a pH between 6.0 and 7.0). It’s good to check pH at least every month, because rain, tap water, and the bacteria in your system can all change the pH of your garden. When your water is no longer neutral, there are a few simple ways to restore the balance between acidity and alkalinity in your garden Reducing pH If your water is alkaline, with a pH above 7.5, you’ll want to reduce pH. The best way to do that quickly is to add an acid. The best types of acid to use are hydrochloric acid, also known as muriatic acid. You can find muriatic acid in the pool supply section of your local hardware store. Use a plastic spoon to add a small amount of the acid to a section of the grow bed away from your standpipe. That way the acid gets diluted by all the water draining from the grow bed before it is reintroduced into the fish tank, preventing concentrated acid from coming in contact with your fish. Some folks recommend lemon juice or apple cider, but it takes large quantities of either of these juices to significantly change your ph. Aquarium supply stores carry a chemical called pH Down, but the pH Down used in aquariums contains sodium, which can damage plants like strawberries. the bacteria produce small amounts of acid as they transform ammonia into nitrate, so in time you may need to add something to offset the acid. Hydroxide or carbonate/bicarbonate compounds of calcium and potassium are the recommended way to keep your garden from becoming too acidic. Not only will these keep your water neutral, the calcium and potassium are necessary nutrients for healthy plants. Stir a small amount of these powders into the media where water comes into your grow beds, or sprinkle the powder into your filter if you don’t use media. Start with small amounts and measure your water the next day to see the impact on pH. Over time you’ll get used to the amount you need to add to your system to obtain the desired effects.
