In 2008 I was in a huge avalanche that I should never have survived.
In this episode of How To Xv I go through the mistakes I made and the lessons that I learnt from that day.
From being over confident, rushing, not looking at the signs, there were many things that I did wrong and I have tried to take those lessons forward with me and hope that I can inspire others to take that extra moment to review a line before dropping in.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below.

THANK YOU for talking about how to use fear. Nothing irks me more than saying, "fear is the enemy". No. Fear is survival. It is why our species has survived to this point. You can harness and control fear. Listen to it (your "gut" or "instinct") and use it when necessary.

Another thing to say is that if you go to the place and decide to leave, you haven't wasted time. Freefride is even just staying in the mountain watching to it.

I think he was heliskiing so, so he meant by saving time thinking about the run or the safety, he can save expensive heli time?

Thanks Xavier. As a dad myself, the fear of a backcountry fatality, and the near misses I've had, have been learning experiences. Going home at the end of the day is the most important and I want to shred well into my 60s. Cant always predict but every precaution is a good one.

Hey Nathan as Mr Butterworth's Journal (!) says, it is making sure that you look at the worst outcomes in order to be prepared. I have a previous episode "How To Manage Fear" where I talk about it more - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7WCdauKzcnXkp8.html&vl=en Hope that helps. XV

It looks like when the slope initially fractures he tried to point it/outrun things instead of stay put. Maybe he didn't notice, maybe he was cocky? I have no idea but either way dude is very lucky to be alive.
@HOWTOXV
@HOWTOXV 2 жыл бұрын
If I can escape from a slab I will always choose that option as I find it way safer, you can't "stay put" as you will go with it, you want to try and point it to a "safe zone" - which is why this day went so very wrong as I did not have any safe zones and had not anticipated it would slide - so you could say "cocky" but the point of the video is to show how wrong I got it, the mistakes I made, so that others can learn. I can assure you that I noticed and yes - very very lucky to be alive.

You also seemed to try to outrun the avalanche and it seems that cutting to riders right you could have almost escape to the side from it. Not judging just given another alternative if a person gets caught into one. Cheers, thanks for the video.
@HOWTOXV
@HOWTOXV 5 жыл бұрын
Heya - totally correct - if you see at the beginning, when the first part cracks, I could have just pulled to the side and waited for everything to go. If I had looked at the face more carefully before, and really watched for islands of safety, possible pockets etc etc etc I would have known that. Xv

What degre slopes are dangerous? I understand that under 30 degres is safe and 35/45 is most dangerous but steeper slopes arent as dangerous becaus they dont acumulate enougth snow? Whats more dangerous north or south sides? Cheers
@HOWTOXV
@HOWTOXV Жыл бұрын
It’s more under 30 degrees less dangerous and 35 - 45 it accumulates quite a bit. But in the steeps the big danger will come from slabs taking you down rather than big avalanches and we fear them. But that is again a generalisation - there are always special cases happening. Again for North and South side, it totally depends on the weather system there has been, if it has been really warm and the south sides (in the northern hemisphere) have been cooking through the day, or if there has been wind loading the north side... you really have to look at the reports in your area and the weather systems, talk to locals etc. As unfortunately there is no, one size fits all answer for avalanches. Sorry for the really slow response! Xv
