My Biggest Bogan Plastic Welding Project Yet! Building a custom BA Falcon Haltech IC-7 Dash Pod!

I have always had an idea of fitting a Haltech IC7 dash into the BA Falcon... except instead of replacing the dash cluster, I'd put it in the centre stack! So a few weeks back I ordered the parts needed and started attempting to turn my idea into reality. And I thought it'd be hilarious if I used bogan plastic welding for the entire process! #motoringbox

Just for laughs I used a soldering iron for the cutting and the bogan plastic welding - and it worked great!

Yep, gets the job done, though most times if you want to keep doing it you would get a separate tip for plastics… or in this case another iron.

Great first effort. I’ve done a bunch of this kinda thing over the years on street and race cars and you’re definitely on the right track. 3D printing is the biggest game changer here over the last 8~10 years - worth looking into as its very affordable these days.

It's always interesting when good work is done to see what kind of options are created. Booya's 280km/h gold Magna also had some interesting thing's done before his car burned up. Some Ralliart Magna's got sunroof's & black/red leather seat's. Even 210kw due to different cams & compression ratio or supercharging to 250kw.

Love the idea! As a prototype it's brilliant, a little refinement and it's golden. I'd keep it simple, just a little bracket that attaches to the rear of the screen and holds it at a lower height / optimum angle. Then you've just got to cover the bracket in a neat manner 👌

Cool concept, i think, align it more with the rear edge of the triangle so it faces the driver more directly and get it as low as you can

Great idea, I´d personally ty to angle the screen a bit more towards the driver and maybe even tilt the screen a bit to the back so you see your data in the corner of your eye instead of having to actively take the eyes off the road.

An alternative way to join ABS plastic pieces together is to use acetone and some ABS scrap to make a plastic slurry and use it like glue. Acetone melts the plastic and welds it together. I just find the fumes from Acetone are better than the fumes of burning plastic (not by much though) and it produces a neater join.

Not a bad idea to start with; but once you have the final idea in mind do a Google search for '3D plastic printing near me' and get someone to cost up the design and printing of something that fits with what you're really wanting.

Such a cool project, best of luck with it! If you wanted to take it a step further, and wanted to reduce the height further, perhaps this could evolve into a chassis for the IC-7 where you would disassemble the IC-7 (at this risk of voiding your warranty of course) and install the internals into it, then install it into the dash - thereby removing the stock bezel plastics and making more room for height reduction, if that makes sense. I'm keen to see where this goes! On another note, the GT3 soundtrack is a banger and I love hearing it in your videos, I still play it periodically and I love it despite not being too good at it.

maybe hit up tuning fork and see if they cant rig together a smaller screen model.. even recessed I think it might look abit out of place due to the sheer girth of the thing, honest opinion. creative af tho edit, maybe think about placing it deeper into the dash, create the illusion that its smaller than it is.

I agree that it's a good idea & yes it's a bit bulky. I'm sure with a bit of refinement, it'll be great. You could play with fibreglass to get what you want & you could wrap it in felt (available from Spotlight). The people who said to use a 3D printer to make a housing are spot on.

I am having a good time fixing problems on my Alfa Romeo 166 with my ender 3 s1. The 166 is all about really hard to find or really expensive (because rare) parts. I've fixed a few parts, outside and inside the cabin, with ABS and TPU parts I've designed. I even made brackets for my security cameras so that they attached to the security screens. It isn't the solution for everything, but you will be surprised but just how useful they can be.

I think it's very cool, yes it is way too bulky, I would try to trim it down as much as possible on all sides especially the bottom, if you could work out a way to drop the whole unit down into the recess and have the front of that dash panel completely cover the bottom bezel and shave some off the sides and top would make it much smaller, just a suggestion to feed your ideas 😎

I’m on the fence. I think with what options you have to integrate the display into the dash without butchering the dash it’s a great idea. I do on the other hand think its a tad bit OTT. Non the less, I’m very intrigued by your ability to keep the Falcon looking period correct without compromising the purity! 😉😉😂😂 Good luck and look forward to seeing if you can make it a little less intrusive. 😎😎

Good spot for it, what about instead of a housing, having it mounted on a bracket with a little bit of swivel to adjust the screen, work out a way to make a recessed tray where the pod gauge would normally go to mount the screen as low as possible. Would look more like a kia stinger screen or similar. Hopfully that makes sense.

The Haltec will have everything you need to see on it... You will be able to look behind it for the fuel gauge plus the factory gauges in those things aren't that accurate anyway.

I'd consider using a 3d printer for the final product... you could use a scanner and get those radius 100% accurate too (I have both but I'm in Sydney) Also, have you considered twisting it slightly to the driver? the area in the dash is already formed that way.

Is there a specific reason you're going this route over replacing the instrument cluster? Mako do fairly clean inserts you can bolt up to and replace the factory IC. Don't get me wrong, I like the concept but the iC7 probably isn't the best option for that placement. I feel if you got a cop on a bad day they could ping you being an obstruction to your view.

like the idea of having the screen display like more modern performance cars like the GTR but on camera it just looks too tall for the location with blocking visibility through the windscreen. I would recommend trying to slim it down more like the way Aston Martin does it with their cars. You could use Aston Martin is a reference guide for what your trying to do because the already successfully pulled it of what your trying to do here. uk.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A4%D0%B0%D0%B9%D0%BB:2019_Aston_Martin_V8_Vantage_Interior_4.0.jpg content.homenetiol.com/1280x960/14ccf3efd66542e8b854256d41040a8a.jpg www.thedrive.com/new-cars/25404/2019-aston-martin-vantage-test-drive-review-a-less-traditional-aston-and-way-better-for-it
