While I normally talk about the good side of anthropology, today I wanted to share the CONS of anthropology. These 3 things really bother me in the field of anthropology. As an anthropology graduate myself, I want to be completely honest with my audience and share the less than positive sides to the field. What do you dislike about anthropology? Please let me know in the comment section down below!!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am a recent UCLA Anthropology graduate on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

I just wanted to take time to thank you for your content. As an anthropology major, it’s hard to come by content where graduates are willing to talk about their experience within/outside of the field. Or relatively new content about anthropology in general. Thank you for your work and I hope you keep this channel going throughout your career advancements ❤️

My biggest pet peeve: Triple A (American Anthropological Association) has practically no benefits for freelance anthropologists (specifically, anthros who aren't associated with a university). I do get discounts on car rentals, car insurance, health insurance, etc- which are nice- but there's no help for me getting funding for my freelance research. I wish there was a labor union for non-academic anthropologists. (I guess the Explorer's Club- but they won't sponsor someone who researches topics like music or sport.)

Wow, how interesting! This is actually something I was not aware of. I think you suggestion on having resources for non-academic anthropologists could be really valuable. I'm definitely going to look into this

@@AliviaBrown My sole resource as a non-academic anthropologist: one sweet old lady who lives in my small town in Alaska who is secretly the leading authority on the anthropology of the Philippines.

Paywall is for anything academic and it's gatekeepy af. Also hate it. Holler if you need some articles, I have access to a few online libraries.

Hi. Not an anthropology student and i think the paywall is applicable to any research project. it annoys me too because it is like i need to pay to read an article but i also do not want to spend money on researching for a paper.

Yes!! It most certainly an issue in many fields-so frustrating!

my pet peeve is when people don't culturally relativisticically relate to your culture

The “outdated” seems to resonate if I took a step back from myself. I just remember being in school I asked my teacher if I could borrow some sort of laminated paper for studying purposes. He was of course confused but in a teachable mood “that old thing? whom cares about older tools anyways.” Something like thst haha. Small remarks people use nowadays like “try not to reinvent the wheel” or to some of that sorts, helps reminding us where we came from. So easy to forget the usefulness now that technology has made its presence. I AM SO SORRY for this comment I have a lot to say! 😖🥲 Have good day. 👍

Sorry I’m talking about foragers rather than culture (which is where my interest lies although beginner) but from what I have construed from the endless studies of anthropology. Anthropology is limitless 🧐 haha, I’m not funny but I try. Now…. I am done. I wish you a good day! 🎉
