My biggest problem with playing DDR no bar... (as possibly one of the sweatiest people in the world)

*First of all, this is not intended to start an argument about which play style is "correct", "legit", or whatever. I prefer playing no bar, I like the exercise better, it targets better muscle groups for me, and most of all I find it much more fun and challenging for myself and only myself. Especially based on my size. The title was also written half-jokingly, so with all that in mind...*
UPDATE: I AAA'ed this the following day (on shuffle) fairly easily when playing it earlier in my session - not dripping sweat yet, lol: • AAA Paranoia Evolution...
After completing the trap bar challenges for today, I went to play some casual rounds. That didn't last long, lol.
I really don't exaggerate when I say I may be one of the sweatiest people in the world. Literally everyone I've met who said "oh, I know (x) who sweats soooo much", once they see how much I can sweat, they crown me as the new sweatiest person they know. Luckily I don't sweat just sitting there (unless it's high 70's or higher degrees), but once the floodgates are open... it's BAD.
I don't even use deodorant - it makes me sweat more. Luckily, my east Asian genetics must have left out the stinky gene 😉. I'd have to not shower for at least a day, get really sweaty, and not change clothes for the stank to finally catch up. I can only admit to having done this during my junkie days... Anyway, in fact, even antiperspirant (otc OR prescription) paradoxically causes me to sweat EVEN MORE. Literally my pits will be soaked down to my waist within an hour. Anyway just wanted to mention that (and also brag about my blessed B.O.-lacking Korean genetics 😄).
SO.. why do I mention all that? Because I've mentioned in previous videos that I'm having problems with slipping on the pads. This was always an issue, even way back in the day. And in a lot of my videos, while I do a good job dealing with it or hiding the fact that I could slip any second (or actually am already slipping, but just a tiny bit, hard to see with the naked eye), a lot of times I actually am consciously shifting my playstyle / footing as my sweat keeps dripping onto the pad and my feet start sliding a bit.
Imagine just throwing a few drops of water on the pad every few seconds while you play, and you'll see that it quickly adds up and gets incredibly slippery. And yes, even if I wipe the pads down before each song, I'm still slipping. Usually within 30 seconds of the next song.
You can probably even see how quickly my shirt gets soaked, depending how light it is, throughout some of my videos. Once it's fully saturated with sweat, which doesn't take very long at all, it literally begins to drip off of me (that on top of whatever is already flying off my exposed skin / head).
------
So here's the point: for someone as sweaty as me, this is legitimately an added challenge especially for a no bar player like me! Once I reach that breaking point, I'm now fighting against slippery pads as well. It can be frustrating, but also amusing as well. Since this has been happening more often in my uploads as of late, I figured I would upload this one for fun. Like I said, I've dealt with this for a long time so it may seem like I deal with it pretty well, but you can see me, right after the song ends, literally able to slide all over the pad. When I say I sweat a lot, I mean A LOT.
So anyway, I probably should start bringing an extra outfit down to the basement with me if I plan to play a longer session. As for playing with the trap bar, you'd think it would be more dangerous. But strangely, I haven't dealt with as much slippage during these challenges. My guess would be because of how much I try to conserve movement, plus my arms really can't move / swing around, and also because I can only do trap bar play for so long before I just get worn out and switch to regular no bar play.
So yeah, tl;dr I'm hella sweaty guy, and it legit gets in the way of DDR gameplay often. All my old arcade friends who've seen it in person understand exactly what I'm talking about, but since it's been nearly decades since those days, probably nobody really knows how bad my sweating is. So there ya go!
Please enjoy watching me lose yet another AAA in this video on Paranoia Evolution shuffle thanks to the rivers that flow out of my head.
05/10/2022 - very light general exercises today; currently getting over being sick! Regardless, I decided to attempt AAA'ing all the MAX2 exclusives (while holding the 50lb trap bar) starting today - and got all of them except one! (possible pad good 😠)

The ddr machine i learned on way back in the day was a machine that didnt even have a bar - The folks at my arcade didnt even know a bar existed until like 2 years later when we upgraded from our little 3rd mix machine to 5th mix. Even then we didnt put it together what the bar was for, we used it to hang our coats/towels and when someone from a different city came and used the bar to play, we were like WHOA Even now, like 20 years later, I still prefer to play barless, and use the bar only for harder songs. My arms get fatigued extremely fast since I just started using the bar it last year.

Yeah I started way back in the old days, early to mid 00's. Given you said upgraded to 5th mix, you might have been even more OG! I didn't start til MAX2 was the new thing. But yeah, over here on the east coast was similar. Most people used the bars as towel racks, haha. 10 footers definitely made the bar get used more often, and back before ITG was around, generally at least at the arcades I played at, the bar was only used on 10's. With stricter than perfect timing, I really don't find anything wrong with using the bar. But maybe I'm just old and old-school, but I just don't find it as fun to use higher speed mods and always use the bar. You should try doing dips if you exercise outside of DDR. It'll likely increase your bar-holding-stamina. 🙂

I sweat a lot too and it makes my shoes squeak against the pad. I like for the pad to feel smooth against my feet. I ended up starting to play in socks for this reason and I find it difficult to go back. Try it out! I mainly play ITG content which is a much different skillset, but I often play no bar just for exercise's sake. I will say I don't much care for playing Pump it Up doubles in socks, but everything else is pretty nice. Especially after years of practice.

I might be too heavy to play in socks, hahaha 🥴 I have tried, just farting around while my son was playing in the basement, and it kinda hurt! I could probably further mod the brackets, panels, etc, but honestly I'm happy with playing in shoes the "classic" way, plus it's more conducive to how I more or less do "circuit training" style (switching from weights to DDR and back and forth) through my workouts. I've definitely seen "stamina" play on ITG and how lots of players play with socks (I've also seen someone's video on the types of socks, wearing them outside of shoes, etc) and it's insane. But my feet will probably fall off if I tried it no bar (and also considering I often play with ADDED weight) hahaha. But yeah, the squeaking can be like nails on a chalkboard sometimes. Luckily playing with good form tends to naturally minimize that too (heck, when the pads get that slippery, you kind of HAVE to, or you'll slip and just.. die. Lol!) but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about 🙂

Same here, but I didn't really start til MAX2 had just come out. Most people were fine with using bar on 10 footers but occasionally there were ridiculous people that said it doesn't count then... To them I'd say to clip on 100lbs in weight and tell me how it feels to be me 🤣🤣 I certainly think it's more challenging to play no bar, but using bar doesn't invalidate the score. What I did find a bit goofy was to use the bar on literally EVERYTHING, even something like Think Ya Better D or Butterfly. Once ITG came around, and then Marvelous timing became standard, it made more sense to go high speed mods and use the bar, but to me personally that takes a big element of FUN out of the game... And so I enjoy continuing to play no bar, classic DDR style! 😉

Sorry to hear that, vision problems run deep in my family too 🙁. I don't have issue with using the bar for the most part. If I may bring a thought from another sport here, I can relate to this since holding golf clubs with my sweat hands make the handles very slippery. So, based on this I'd figure that even holding on to the bar would need extra measures so your hands don't slip off.
@i5lee8bit
@i5lee8bit 3 ай бұрын
Surprisingly, though yes my hands get really sweaty too, it doesn't really become a problem with maintaining a solid grip on the bar. I guess it's a lot like how [under most circumstances] it's not an issue for me when lifting weights either. But I can see swinging a golf club being a bit different... "Whoops!" *fwwiiiiiing* "heads up!!!" 😝

@@i5lee8bit Very xD due to the layout of one of our local golf courses, I tend to have my worst times crossing rivers and lakes in the back 9 (last 9 holes) because of it. It's not bad enough that I'm working my swing and can't drive too far (probably 100 maybe 120 yd max), I need my sweaty hands to make sure I'm challenging the equivalent of an 18 but on golf :D All in good fun, but I'm glad that sweaty hands don't interfere for you in DDR.

Gymnast chalk would probably help only if I played with bare feet (ouch!).. and that's only until the arrows/sensors get all caked up with the stuff hahaha. I'm sure you see I have the big Ryobi cannon fan down there. It definitely comes in way handy during the summer time, but it's like mid-50° down there in the wintertime. If I use it in the wintertime, I'm getting ready for some hardcore nipple chafage... 😵 (yes I know you were joking lol - although the effect of chalk blowing everywhere would probably add some Hollywood effects to my gameplay 🤪)

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I love to sweat during exercise and it's extremely healthy too. But I sweat in ridiculous excess. If it's more than 70° and I move too much while sitting, it's like a dam opens up and I start flooding. Possibly hyperhidrosis, likely just extremely overactive sweat glands. I can think hot thoughts and start streaming out of my head hahaha. During DDR, I sweat so much that the pads literally form puddles halfway through a song and I have to play very carefully (or hold the bar). In fact, way back around 2003-2004(?), I was already playing flat footed / heel-toe style before it was at all common (I think I was the first east coast player to play that way, well before any videos of that style were ever around or discussed), and the truth is that it was out of NECESSITY due to not wanting to, you know, slip and break a leg or die 🤪. Also, it just made sense since I weighed like 100lbs more than the average DDR player lol. Keep it up man, DDR is a Godsend for exercise and I feel so blessed to have it, let alone a home gym now!

@@Jukeboksi Man, I used to love playing no bar doubles back in the day! So Deep heavy doubles was so fun, especially nailing that last jump. But yeah, just like with playing 10 footers even on single, I've always needed to be careful and/or use the bar once the puddles start making me slip hahaha. But somewhat recently, before my 2P side broke (literally like weeks after setting up 😭), as an old fart now I had to use the bar on doubles. It actually felt legit scary on my knees when I started playing like I was still a teenager! Having a knee surgery less than a year before (at that time) would do that I guess! 🧓🩼 Thanks for the kind words my man, hope you have a blessed Thanksgiving!

I can't not use the bar, apart from for jumps. I need to use it to get enough force in the dancing stage euromix I play cos the sensors arent great. And for DDR A i just okay max levels and stuff and i still struggle with the bar. My hardest clear so far is either DDR Megamix or The Legend of Max. I'm going for Come to Life at the moment.

I do occasionally use the bar (harder 10 footers, feeling lazy / running out of energy, etc). Actually I find that I have other quirks with how I use it that most people don't (given my size interestingly). It's generally much better to hold the bar with your fingers facing away from the screen. It gives you a better supported position, easier to hold your hips out, easier on your shoulders (body weight to shoulder support ratio I guess) in my experience. But I have some trouble holding it that way because the size of my arms. ESPECIALLY if I work out my triceps and they're "pumped", my arms don't wanna rotate out and stay in that position, lol. But even without that, it's a tight squeeze for me to hold it that way. So I often end up holding it in the less optimal position with my fingers facing toward the screen. 🤷‍♂️ Sometimes I wonder if a wider bar (PIU? Haven't played PIU arcade in nearly 20 years tho) would fix that for me, because my shoulders are already wider than the DDR bar as it is... Lol. But as a primarily no bar / classic player, obviously this isn't that important to me anyway. Also to be honest, back in the day I don't recall ANY arcades having the padded sleeve on the top of the bar. So nice of the original owner to have those! They definitely also help given my hyperhidrosed hands 😂

Yeah one of the things I don't particularly like about modern DDR (doesn't sound like it applies to what you mentioned tho btw), because of MARVELOUS attack, the need to use the bar on basic charts just to go super high speed mod making leaning on the bar a necessity. Not at all downplaying the skill needed to MA, but it definitely takes a lot of FUN factor out... 😕
