In short, my 2009 BMW 535i with X-Drive is currently down for some time. N54's have are notorious for catastrophic engine failure happening due to belts being shredded and then getting sucked into the motor by breaking the crank seal. This is part 1 of a few videos that will explain what's happening as I go through the proper repair process to get my BMW back on the road and running reliably once again!

I worked in a bmw shop one time this 535i came in looking like a locomotive, oil in the intake and in exhaust.. turbo failed miserably. It was a bitch to replace, the little screws for the coolant and oil lines,oh yeah loved doing those

It is definitely a pain and a half to do! That's my next project with this one. 88,000mi and the turbos have failed. But to be fair, I was pushing them well over their designed rating.

i just bought a car like this and this i would recommend getting out as much material as you can and then let it sit for 3 months the oil will weaken the belt inside and the timing chain will break it up after that change you oil after 400 miles then again at 500 then 600 800 900 just keep doing that until you feel like you oil pump is safe

Same thing happened to me but I got lucky and it didn’t breach the seal all the way. There’s one piece of the belt left that’s stuck but won’t budge. Should I give it some more muscle or should it come right out with the seal remover tools?
@FoulNews
@FoulNews 5 жыл бұрын
I'd say if there's any belt that broke the seal, even if it' didn't break all the way, you'll definitely need to replace the seal. The seal removal tool should be able to get it out.

Same thing just happened to my 328. Belt broke due to oil leak. Ripped out main oil seal and was apparently sucked into engine...as I quickly got a “low oil pressure” warning light. Figured my oil pickup tube is clogged with belt bits. I’ll be tearing into it soon. Not looking forward to it.
@FoulNews
@FoulNews 5 жыл бұрын
That's unfortunate. Since the low oil pressure light came on, it would be a good idea to cut open the oil filter to see if any metal bits are in it. Also if you can, plastigauge the rod bearings to see if they're still within spec.

Same thing happened to my wife’s e90.. Unfortunately we had a shady mechanic try to fix it and he only made it worst... I now have a reputable guy working on it and should get it back tomorrow. Almost $5000 set back... Yikes.. I just thought about it.. Probably should have junked it but my wife loves the car sooooooooo.. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your next video...

I'm sorry to hear that, that's really unfortunate! That's a lot of money, but hopefully once it's fixed it'll be good for quite a long time. Thank you, I'm still waiting on a shop to have space to let me use their lift, but I'm hoping to have some sort of update this week.

@@FoulNews Was the engine salvageable or did you get a new used engine? How many miles on the turbos?
@FoulNews
@FoulNews 4 жыл бұрын
@@BIMMERZEITT Engine turned out okay. There's some wear on the cams and ledges, bearings looked okay, but slightly worn. It pretty much got aged a bit due to oil starvation, so when it goes finally, it goes. However compression and leakdown are good. Turbos are stock with 86k miles on them, but also they've been on 22psi on e40 for a while, so that has worn them down quite a bit lol.

Would I need to remove inlets or dci for just replacing belts and tensioner?
@FoulNews
@FoulNews 5 жыл бұрын
It's possible to replace the belt without removing the front inlet or DCI, but it makes it much harder. To remove the pulleys, you'll need to remove the front intake filter and inlet, which should take you about 5 mins to do if you already have the fan and oil cooler out of the way.

@FoulNews

Tony Trinh If it’s stripped, I’d recommend going to the next size Torx bit and tapping it in with a hammer. I had to do that for my tensioner as well. I think it was a t47 I beat into the slot then I was able to turn it.
