Went on a Wholefood Plant Based Diet when I was 61. Had Oseteoarthritis in my fingers, knees, ankles, and 1 hip, starting at about age 40. 4 Months on the whole food plant based diet (lots of carbs after reading your book, The Starch Solution) Osteoarthritis disappeared. And now at 67 still arthritis free & I all I take is B12 a couple of times a week & Vit D3 in winter. Feel great. Best thing I ever did for my overall health ever. Thankyou Dr McDougall.

Your comment sounds exactly like a comment from an article I saw the other day from someone who went on the carnivore diet. They had the same things you did osteoarthritis and inflammation, etc. and now feels perfectly healthy and those things all went away. And I remember researching veganism that three years ago, and they said the same thing!

Like everything in life. What works for some doesn't work for others. I would be interested though to get some feedback from anyone who has been on a carnivore diet long term. I see plenty of WFPB Doctor's and others testimonials about being WFPB for 30-40 years or more. Would love to see the same testimonials for the Carnivore Diet. I will look further in to that, as I admit I haven't done that research, but I will.@@Livetoeat171

I’m a WFPB vegan, but osteoarthritis is mechanical, not autoimmune. So, you’re comment sounds cray-cray… now, having said that, if you lost weight, you took the extra force (extra weight) off those joints, you probably would feel better. But its not “cured”. Lifting weights also helps osteoarthritis, because the muscles take some of the brunt of the load, which helps the joints (there are other advantages besides this that come from lifting, but this is basic). Lets not pretend a WFP based diet can “cure” everything. K? Pseudoscience doesn’t help anyone, and puts you squarely in the camp with carnivore “science”, just on the opposite end of the cray-cray spectrum

I was 20 years old in the beginning of 2000 when I was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis. At the time I was vegetarian, which means meat-free, but not free of animal products. A strict vegetarian, which is the diet of a vegan, is rare among vegetarians. Most have an invisible prefix attached to the word, such as lacto-, ovo-, and the word lost its true meaning a long time ago... So calorie-wise, it was the same as before; an omni diet where I had only swapped meat for more dairy and more eggs - and did not increased my intake of greens. Long story short, I went vegan (for the animals!) in 2005. We didn't have all these processed foods back then, so it was a more or less a whole foods plant based diet. I've been symptom free ever since I switched to a wfpb diet and also stopped with the meds sometime later. I also got rid of my food/pollen/animal allergies and didn't have to take medicine for my hypothyroidism! Now I haven't taken as much as an aspirin in over a decade! 😎 Btw, during my last checkup, I asked my neurologist about food and MS and he just smiled. But he did suggest I'd go back on the meds, you know, "just in case". 🤷‍♂ But that is sadly common. My mom asked her doctor is she could lower the blood pressure meds now that she's been vegan for some years, to which he replied "If that was the case, we would be prescribing our patients carrots." 🤦‍♂ I don't know if they honestly don't know, don't care, or know but need to push their meds. Happy to hear more and more doctors are becoming aware. It's crazy that they don't get to know anything/much about diet when studying to become a doctor... Been following you for years now after my friend sent me your newsletter on MS and protein! Thank you for sharing this! ✌

Unfortunately, sometimes doctors are the worst thing about healthcare. Most are reactive and not proactive. They’ll quickly dispense medication to deal with your illness/disease but offer no advice on how food/diet/nutrition can play a vital role in reducing your chances of becoming sick in the first place. God forbid they prescribe a carrot over expensive medications.

There was a doctor, a pediatrician who talked on tv, and published in Parents magazine, who talked about milk being a big problem to the health of children. Still I gave my kids cow's milk. It's that separation between what we believe, and what we do. You can hear Dr. McDougall's frustration when he tries to teach the wholeness of inflammation, and the wholeness of the 'cure'. He keeps saying that you just get on a 100% whole food all plant eating plan, and in a few days you'll start to see improvement. People want a test, and to name their syndrome, but the body wants to heal itself if the poisons are taken away. It's ok, John. It's getting better.

I was thinking about how long I've known about Dr. McDougall and his work (30 years) and how I fluctuate in and out of the recommendations for good health. Mostly OUT because I'm swayed by so many other people (family) and this environment of fast food we live in. But these talks are motivating me to really get back "with it" again. In fact I committed to myself to eat whole foods for Lent (and hopefully beyond) - I've done it before and I can do it again. I might get my husband to repeat the 12-day program online with me - he got to attend in person a few years ago but he also let poor habits slip back in. ANYWAY, I love you & Mary! Thanks for all you do. ♥♥♥

Thank you so much Dr McDougall and Chef AJ!! These lectures are so interesting. Before finding this diet I was trying (and failing) for several years to be high carb low fat raw vegan. I wasn’t able to stick to it and I wasn’t getting the results. My weight was creeping up and I could feel my health beginning to deteriorate. It is sooooooooo much easier and more satisfying to eat a high carb low fat starch based diet. My health improved, weight decreased!! I feel great and hopeful for the future. Thank you thank you thank you for the work you both do. I did want to comment that I too have noticed a runny nose issue after some starch meals. I haven’t tried an elimination diet but have observed that it seems to occur after meals with gluten, more processed starches e.g. bread, brown rice pasta, cereals and also white rice is sometimes a culprit. The more whole the food the less likely the symptoms. Also if I include some raw food in the meal eg. greens, coleslaw mix, etc. I feel better. Thank you Mary! I love the bean pizza recipe too :)

Watching this again a year later and somehow I missed ChefAJ reading my question and Dr. McDougall’s response. It is so much the food. I just came off a medically supervised weight loss program. I did lose 16 pounds after not being able to lose anything however I was miserable. Shakes and bars are not food and it didn’t help me learn how to eat properly. I am doing the mini program to kickstart me back on WFPB starch based diet. As always, I am so grateful for ChefAJ, Dr and Mary McDougall. 💗💗💗

Unfortunately, most doctors will dismiss the studies you provide and refer you back to the Standard American Diet…which is why you’re sick to begin with. They’ll write you a prescription and send you on your way. Functional Medicine doctors are different as they take a whole body approach and how our organs interact with each other. If you can’t locate a Functional Medicine doctor locally these videos are your next best option. Stay healthy 🙏🏼

Jean McCormack - I have a very dear friend who has suffered with Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis for many years. She’s had two bowel resection surgeries, and is on ‘biologics’ and a whole spectrum of other medications. She has recently also been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and is now on insulin medication as well. She feels terrible. Could you please elaborate on your condition, and how a plant-based diet helped you. What do you normally eat in a day? Any good whole food diet plans (or books) you can recommend? I’m trying to develop a diet plan for her, but she is sceptical because her gastroenterologists have repeatedly affirmed that her illnesses have “nothing to do with diet”(!). I love her dearly, and more than anything would like to help her, but I’m just not equipped. Could you give me some recommendations from own experience? I wish you continued Good Health & A Very Happy 2023! Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. 🙂

Chef AJ, I used to be sensitive to legumes like you and never eat them until I started to rinse, soak and sprout them for 24 hours before cooking them well (on the softer side) in the Instapot. I rinse them before soaking them for about 8 hours. I rinse them and put them in a sprouter near the window (to get sun on them). I rinse them after 12 hours. Before cooking them in the iPot, I rinse them extremely well like 3 times. I cook them with a kombu piece (I believe you can also use baking soda). I cook them the maximum time suggested after soaking in the iPot manual. I pour about 1 inch of water above them in the iPot. Et voilà! :)

Within the second hour, the Dr and his wife talk of using sunscreen. By or in the water all day, I can understand using it. However, knowing a few people who used it often to work in gardens or outdoor activities and still had skin cancer including melanoma, I looked into information Id read in Scanning health news, about cancer causing chemicals IN the sunscreen. Also the chemicals being stimulated or reacting more by the sun itself! We cant get away from everything toxic but I haven’t used sunscreen in a long time ( but I don’t windsurf of go to the beach often) and try to avoid chemicals when possible. Perhaps there is an almost chemical free sunscreen on the market somewhere. I have read also, that long ago people who were outdoors much (it was unheard of to have so much cancers of the skin. Some say they wore long sleeves and hats; not sure that’s always true either. Interesting none the less. Personally the sun time seems to help me feel so well…even if aging to the skin. Baking not required.😁

Your skin looks wonderful AJ. And I’m glad you mentioned you still have this hypothyroidism although u switched to a plant based diet. Thank you. I can relate, I been on a strict healthy Whole Foods plant based diet, no oil for 8 years, after my cancer diagnosis, and I still suffer from arthritis.

The ketogenic diet is often recommended for epilepsy, but i have found that a plant based diet seems to have helped me these last couple years. What affect could vegan diet have on epilepsy?

Stones in Millet - you have to pick them out. As are also on dried beans packages - clean them means pick through it. Pour the milltet on a plate. Most products packaged in the USA are very clean. I used to buy brown chick peas from India or Pakistan - I'd always find stones. I was at times lazy, bit on a large stone - luckily I didn't break a tooth.

Interesting lecture and I agree with almost 100% of what he said. I went to his website and the diet contains whole wheat items, I am a bit confused due to the fact that his lecture said to eliminate wheat, barley and rye???

What do you say about the recent rise of autoimmune diseases in these two years? Could the immune system be attacking “foreign protein” other than that from the meat?
