As a Black woman in America, Omisade Burney Scott always relied on her well-curated, bold vibe to keep her appearing successful and feeling accepted in this world. But when menopause hit in her late 40’s, she found herself in a deep depression that had her body screaming at her to get back to her IDGAF 10 year old self, unmasked, unencumbered by the need for external validation, and not yet scarred by the effects of colorism. Now at 54, Omisade is only speaking to herself with kindness and learning to feel valuable and loveable without any facade, even when she feels like a “hot diggity mess.” In her menopausal rebirth, she has taken the courageous step of leaving her more traditional career, gifting herself space to heal, and paying it forward to her community through the launch of her organization, Black Girls Guide to Menopause (@blackgirlsguidetomenopause). Watch Omi’s video and get a dose of how medicinal it is to let your curated vibe crumble and be “sweet to your damn self.”
For Omi’s extended 1 hour cut in which she goes deeper on challenging colorism, embracing her natural grey hair, eviscerating the successful Black woman checklist, and returning to her IDGAF 10 year old self, head to the StyleLikeU Patreon now: bit.ly/3sa8Mxw

“You can show up like a raggedy, hot, shitty mess and still be lovable.” Needed to hear that. Needed the reminder that I can still love ME even when I show up raggedy. I still showed up.

Thank you....I needed this so much. As middle aged black women who haven't achieved certain goals , we are told that we need to become panicked and contort ourselves into something that is more glamorous, more desirable to succeed. I've realized that it is so important to BE KIND to ourselves, LIKE ourselves, take a break from the hamster-wheel and just let life happen without the constant struggle. We are good enough just as we are, despite what men tell us, social media tells us, the world tells us. Just breathe.

It's many of us who appear to be so strong, so put together, that some forget we're human too. It's tiring being strong all the time. We hurt just like everyone else, it's a misconception to simply believe strong/ strong appearing people have it together always and aren't allowed to have issues. In a judgemental & idealistic world I believe everyone struggles with something.

The way that she takes care when she's taking her clothes and accessories off and not letting them hit the floor and her shoes placed closely by and together... Is so real for me.. Even when I go to the doctor for an exam I take my clothes off, gently fold them, and place them on a chair or in a locker. I do the same with my shoes. It's the little things that matter to me more than almost anything else. They speak volumes without saying a word.

I realised yesterday that when my mind, body and spirit are screaming and screaming at me, I respond to that visceral message with, "Shhhhhhh... you can do it," and push myself a little more. I too can treat myself really horribly, because if I'm not serving someone else, where's my value? The real work for me is interrogating the guilt of being told I'm letting people down by not letting them eat me alive. Thanks to Omisade for her incredible sharing x

As a woman of 58, menopause has orchestrated my life to lead me into owning my own authenticity ... my own sovereignty. I could relate completely to this story ... to the little girl who asking to be seen, acknowledged and brought forth into this new chapter of my life. I'm still trying to find my style ... now that my body has expanded and taken on a new shape. it seems foreign to me. Still more healing happening.

“Curator: a manager or an overseer.” If that doesn’t define WOMAN and MOM, I don’t know what does! I love how purposefully she chooses her words. Sometimes redefining words seems to “dumb them down” but she did the opposite! She educated herself and most of us who watched this I believe, on the meaning of words and how she is going to use them to empower her! Love this!!!

Wow. Love her! Omi rocks! Thank you for showing us your Goddess. 🙏 Something sorely missing from our world in vast ways. Even from the pulpit…the Goddess isn’t acknowledged. Like she was erased. Eve was doomed from the jump. I don’t think that is a Divinely inspired story. When I look at the world within & around me, I see representations of the Divine that are most definitely Feminine. Something our world desperately needs. Great series. Really helped me today. Thank you 🙏

The part about dressing good despite being poor is something my mom was always known for and I am very thankful for her views but growing up I also thought and found dressing good around people that I did not like (family friends) and were also poor felt waste of time and out of place😤 some would even feel a sense of envy/jealousy and never compliment even if they deep down might of liked what I wore.

I’m so grateful for this video. You truly remind me of my older sister. She’s a beautiful dark skinned woman with a dazzling smile, jazzy sense of style, and a really big presence. She was so powerful and a veracious lover of her family. When I was a young person She took care of my sister and I like our mother while our moms worked too much to be around. Basically Her childhood was taken away from her she had to learn to cook, clean, do our hair, soothe us from age 9. I remember going through my inner child healing along with her several years back. It was incredible to walk along together and inspire each other to have mercy on ourselves, to be soft, to be vulnerable. It’s been a long journey for myself but everyday I celebrate my short comings as proof of my progression and my victories as evidence of my ascension. When I notice new ways of relating to myself I stop to thank myself and god/universe/higher self whatever you call it. It’s in each celebrated moment that we can truly be kind to ourselves and that our inner child, our souls can be held in the arms of our highest truth/essence of our selves. It’s in each merciful moment that we can be lotus flowers blossoming in the most muddy waters. Thanks for sharing your heart. I love this channel and I cannot wait to age :^)

I am so touched by what you say here. I had horrible issues with perimenopause that left me deeply depressed, so I have a sense of what you are talking about. I love your style, Omi, and your hair is a dream. I'm 71, and I very recently reconnected with the gleeful 2 year old that felt so abandoned, squelched, etc. Happy is such a gift. And you, Ms. Omi, are absolutely beautiful.
