The blurb between Dr. J, Julius Irving and Bird needs expanded on. On Nov. 9, 1984, the Philadelphia 76ers visited their rival Boston Celtics in an early-season meeting. Despite the game being played in the first full month of the season, it had a playoff-like atmosphere. Larry Bird was torching the Sixers to the tune of 42 points on 17-for-23 shooting in 30 minutes. He also had pulled down seven rebounds. Erving had just six points. And Bird started yelling out the score between them. When he yelled out 38-6, meaning he had 38 points and Irving just had 6, things got pretty ugly. With 1:38 left in the third quarter, Bird and Julius Erving got tangled up with Bird getting called for an offensive foul. Before the next possession began, Bird and Erving were going at it on the court. At one point, Bird was held by a Sixers player while Erving punched Bird in the face. The fight erupted into a melee at mid-court. Bird and Erving were each fined $7,500 which was the second-highest for player conduct at the time.

I saw an interview with Bird late in his career and the reporter asked him about his legendary trash talk. Bird said he talked smack to get fired up with the challenge of backing it up and to mess with the opponent's head. He then said "I don't do it (trash talk) as much as I used to because I can't back it up as well as I used to." I really liked that. Bird was a ruthless killer but he was an honorable sportsman. Another favorite Bird moment - he was running back down court after swishing a spectacular running jump shot. Bird turned his head to the opponent running alongside with an ear-to-ear hick grin on his face and held out his palm. The brother matched the grin and gave it a healthy slap. The sportsmanship and love-of-the-game vibe was too cool.

I am of Bird's generation. Magic was my favorite player, but he and Bird were both artists on the court. Today's game would be ideal for Bird. Size, jumping ability, what they call athletic ability are important but skill rules--skill and a sense for the game are the 2 most important things in the game. Look at some of todays players. Is Steph a great athlete? How about Luca? Chris Paul? Kyrie? Harden is not a superior athlete either. I think Bird would also benefit from training and medical advances and would probably have had a longer career if playing today. He would be one of the best in ERA, but I always though Magic was a notch ahead of him. Magic would be great to day as well but I think Birds game translates a little better.

The league and its players owe Bird, Magic and Jordan EVERYTHING they have from the being in the NBA. Stern is on record saying that at one time the league was considered a thug league and on the brink of ending. But God smiled in 1978 and gave the NCAA a Bird vs Magic match up and it worked so well he allowed it to follow them to 1979. From there they changed how the game was played. Magic was a 6'9 PG which was unheard of in 79 while introducing Show Time to the world as well. Bird had a ugly but deadly jump shot along with a strong understanding of the importance of fundamentals. They showed that flash and fundamentals could both bring championships in there own way. They made America interested in the NBA again with their rivalry. Then Jordan came along and took the game global and that is the biggest reason why one can sign a ridiculous 5 yr 170 million contract today. So yeah those 3 should get 1% of every contract from every team. 😉

Note that these opponents speak with admiration NOW. I don't think they felt it then, but later realized how tough it is to back up you sh*t night after night. Larry was a solid guy. He later helped Chuck Person get a job when Bird was with the Pacers (although Chuck had some legal issues later in life). He was a true friend to Magic (supported him when he was HIV +) and Barkley (called him in support when Barkley got a DUI). There are LOTS of other trash talking stories (Kevin McHale, Pat Ewing, Rick Carlisle, Danny Ainge, Robert Parish, Dan Majarle, John Stockton, James Worthy, Kareem, Rodman, Isiah, etc. Larry generally couldn't physically dominate (although to call him unathletic is false) but he could take you out mentally, like Orlando Woolrige said.

@@dunsonhouse First off I have *seen* the ENTIRE game. The Hawks and Celtics were close at halftime. By two point or so. sot wasn't any blow out at that time. Nor I was the end maybe. Celtics finished 12 points ahead. t the final score One of the reasons the Hawks players at the end fell off the bench is that Larry Bird set a record for most baskets he had ever had which was 60 baskets. It not only a record for Bird, it was also the Celtics record as well. They knew it was a count down for Bird as he broke his *own* teammates (McHale) at 56 points. Of course in t he said "Why6 did you pull yourself of the game with five minutes left? You had the hot hand, we gave you the feeds, their guards were ineffective .[including Domonique Wilkins] 9 days after he had set it the record beating Bird's previous record. If that ball had been mine and the same circumstances hell I'd keep going and try for 60." BUT WHAT STUNNED THEM WAS AFTER HALFTIME Bird bombed in 37 of his points in the second half with *remarkable perimeter shooting display* punctuated by an incredible 11 points over the final 1:56 minutes of play.

He scored 60 ppints for a reason, he cpuld have done it many other times but wanted to do it that game. He would pass alot to other guy a week before to avenge his high school bully who was guardjng mchale. He succeeeded and his high school bully was angry and suspended but Mchla ebrole his points record. That was a week befpre this game and Bird said “you should have gone for 60”. One of those college kids tried to trash talk Bird, said he hadn't hit a jump shot since 1984. Magic heard that and for the next eight or nine plays fed Bird, who'd tell that trash-talking defender exactly what he was going to do. "One dribble right, spin, off glass," Bucket. After doing this eight or nine times and hitting every single shot exactly the way he described, he went to lie down (by then his back was so bad he couldn't sit on the bench), and said "young fella -- look like '84, don't it?"

I'm glad i grew up during the Heyday of the NBA . The Playoffs were battles every round . You saw sweeps but it was rare . I was spoiled watching Bird in his prime . I can just imagine the Championships we could have won with Len Bias . What a Sin RIP len bias .

Jordan saw how Larry got in peoples heads and realised if he didn't use that tool, he was missing a trick. He's a graduate of Larrys' Master Class in trash talk. P.S. If Drexler actually said, 'gosh, boy, you're so confident' and not something much dirtier, I'll eat my hat!

I'm going to ask you two, the same thing I ask anyone who posts a reaction to this video. Is it really trash talking, when one back it up?? To be, it seems more like a tutorial on playing basketball. Bird was teaching them lessons every game. He brought the best playing out of his teammates and elevated their games. He improved defenses, just by the fact that they had to evolve their games, to even hope to slow him down. I gave up on watching pro basketball after he retired and the starting five broke up. I didn't see another Bird caliper player out there, or coming along. I don't see one out there now and it's been almost 30 years since he retired. Good reaction. Thank you.

Take a look at his 3 point shot where he raises a finger. His knuckle on his shooting hand was mangled playing softball in high school. All that and his neck which was trashed alone are hard to fathom. I like you guys. I get the sense that you're common sense, grounded guys that can look at life for what it is.

Just remember - in the first story told by Byron Scott, the players for the Lakers on the floor at the time were - Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott and Michael Cooper. They knew the play but could not stop Bird.

Good video bro. It makes me happy to see young cats looking at things from when the league it was definitely a lot more hardcore and at your neck. If you look into it there's a few times where Jordan is actually giving bird some credit for making him mentally tougher. Of course Mike was young and Larry was halfway through his career when they met but Jordan did like all the greats do they learn from a gray and a little bit on it bird in Georgia to my favorite two players of all time. It depends what day it is which one I said my number one keep up the good work and mind you, the people he's doing this against some of them religious in their own right

I miss those good old days. When i played sports in the 80s and 90s, i was going to war. I wouldn’t waste my time playing if I couldn’t put 200% into winning that game. And if you were talented and strong but were slacking off, you got no respect from me. I want you to give it everything you got. Because I’m gonna bring it to you. Larry the goat. I played the same way. People used to tell me to lighten up and not be so intense. No bro. If im not intense. I might as well go home and go to bed. I don’t deserve to play.
