One other thing: I consider Michael Jordan the GOAT if I’m forced to pick just one player. BUT - there is only one NBA player that MJ never got the best of: Larry Bird. I sh*t you not. MJ was 0-6 against Bird’s Celtics in the playoffs, and 11-17 in the regular season. It kind of makes you wonder. Only against Coach Larry Bird’s Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Finals did MJ ‘s Bulls prevail - by 4 points in the 7th game. Like I said, both were incredible competitors in addition to having enormous talent. It was a toss-up between these 2 gladiators. And so fun to watch them square off. Bird & Magic were even better to watch compete against each other. Those were the days….

Not sure if you'll read this but I have to say. As a Boston guy & huge Bird fan who watched at least 90% of Birds games either in person at the old Boston Garden or on local Boston Tv who broadcasted all Celtic games home & away. You guys did an absolutely fantastic, classy & intelligent job commenting about Bird. He was amazing. I'm very very lucky to be old enough to have seen him play. Hey he's "Larry Legend" for a reason. Your brother is right. Michigan State was a contender team, and Larry's small school, Indiana state, never went anywhere before. He pretty much took them 33-0 to the finals on his own. They just double teamed him all night, not worried about the other players too much.

He won Rookie of the year and finished 4th in the MVP race that year and was all NBA 1st team. I was lucky enough to have watched every game he played and I can tell you nobody did it better period . I watched that game on TV back in 1979. I knew Michigan State would win (and they did 75-64) because I’d seen them play throughout the year. MSU wasn’t just Magic Johnson, although he was clearly on another level. They had another phenomenal player named Greg Kelsor. And a deep bench. And a Hall of Fame Coach - Jud Heathcote. Indiana State relied too heavily on Larry Bird. As terrific as he was, his overall team was no match for the Spartans. That would change in the NBA. Larry was league MVP for 3 straight years! He had a killer instinct like Michael Jordan. And he was like the Incredible Hulk - the madder Larry got, the better Larry got. As Isiah Thomas once said: “You put me, Larry Bird, Magic, and MJ in a room, Larry’s probably the guy that walks out.” Some guys just have that intangible strength and will to win - Larry’s one of them. He definitely wanted the ball in tight, end-of-game situations. And he almost always delivered.

Bird did for basketball what Tiger did for golf. They outshined and outplayed the competition pure and simple.

The G.O.A.T, debate NEEDS to be subjective, it's no fun any other way, To state one guy as the G.O.A.T. as fact is boring for fans of the game. It's the debate that is fun. Having said that what I have noticed upon revisiting Bird's career in all of these videos is other G.O.A.T.s either say "Bird was the best player they ever played against" or "He taught me a lot about how to play the game" or "he brought the best out of me, I had to up my game while facing him." While younger players like LeBron acknowledge people before him that he wanted to pattern his game after. Taking all of that into account. If you remove Larry Bird from the history of the NBA altogether you then have other G.O.A.T.s not playing as hard as they might have to even become the G.O.A.T.s they are considered to be. You no longer have the 86 Celtics team and what they did being taught to most NBA players on how to play as a team. You have no great players today looking at film of Larry showing them what was possible or how much hustle and playing hurt means if you wan to be a great yourself. This is what Clayton (maker of the video) means when he says "Larry left so much DNA in the game..." It is never discussed enough in the G.O.A.T. conversation the question of "What does the sport look like today WITHOUT a Larry or Jordan?". It is definitely a way to determine who were the greats. Having said that, I have watched all of the "Making the Case" series and each time I finish one I say to myself "well maybe THEY were the G.O.A.T.:" That shows how subjective it can be. I would just hope younger fans realize when oldheads talk about the G.O.A.T.s that they are Basketball fans and have watched the sport for decades, they see the new guys, they are still fans but they have also seen the older players and are making their case having seen it all. Whereas I see kids on youtube just saying "so and so is the G.O.A.T." having never seen the legends of the past play. The difference is older fans and ex players HAVE actually seen both older and newer players play and are giving their opinion. The college game, Larry was double teamed the whole game and he didn't have the depth of players to pick up the slack, he carried the whole team to the championship. Michigan, I believe, had 3 future HOF's helping Magic.

The stat that's the most impressive to me is this; in a 9 year run from 1980 to 1989, Larry Bird got 67% of all MVP votes that were cast. All other players combined only received 33% of the votes. I don't know how many votes there are in a given year, but let's pick a random number of 30 votes per year. Over 9 years that's 270 total votes. Larry Bird would have gotten 180 votes for league MVP of the 270 votes cast, leaving just 90 votes to divide up among the many other great players at the time. That's a stunning statistic. In a 7 year stretch during that run, Bird got 3 mvp awards in consecutive years and finished 2nd in the voting the other 4 years. For 7 consecutive years those who voted said he was the best or 2nd best in the league. In the other 2 years he came in 4th in his rookie year while winning the Rookie of the Year award. His worst finish in those 9 years was 3rd in 1988 I believe.

The difference is the physical stature of players today, not the skill set or athleticism. Plenty of that back in the day….the biggest difference is heart….today’s players, most of them, do not have the heart the players did back in Larry Joe’s day. They truly played for the love of the game…not the shoe contracts, sports drinks, and billions of dollars. They didn’t jump teams and form “super teams” ,they definitely didn’t talk politics and try to be an “influencer”. They played the game. Larry wasn't just league mvp for 3 years in a row. He was also runner up (2nd) in the years before and after those 3 mvps (3 and 2 years respectively or vice versa, I forget).. so he almost became mvp for 8 years in a row.

The Lakers had 4 #1 overall draft picks on their team at one time (Kareem, Magic, Worthy, and Mychel Thompson). Michigan State had 3 first round picks on their championship team (Magic, Greg Kelser, and Jay Vincent). The game is always evolving. The new learn from the Birds, Magics and Jordans who in turn learned from the Russels, Wilts, and Pistol Petes. The reason the new generation doesn't get the respect from the older generation is because of the soft ruleset. Fouls getting called for looking at someone wrong and the lack of hustle and discipline. Guys didn't skip games because they had a cold - they played with every ounce of heart they had. This new generation of player is more concerned with the money than the game.

This is how you know Magic and Larry were destined to be in each others lives, no one points out that they both wore #33 in college and Larry was #33 for Boston and Magic was #32 for the Lakers. Even their jersey were in sequence.

Hey I'm not a basketball fan and I don't really watch sports ,but, I do go down rabbit holes on youtube and I've gained a lot of respect for Larry and Magic!!! I respect those two a lot they took something that was dying and made it amazing to where everyone loves it! They both played the same way too! They both kept the whole team involved and like Clayton said the two top winners statistically wise is Larry and Magic! They played it to where they let the rest of the team get involved. I am So Glad that Your brother realises what EVERYBODY else seems to ignore about the NCAA Final in 79 is that Bird had carried what was really like a 3rd Division College team to the finals in an unbeaten season, Whereas Magic was playing for one of the Elite Basketball Powerhouses. When have Indiana State Sycamores been in an NCAA final before of since? And when has a 3rd Division College EVER got the NCAA final before or since. The point was; one of the greatest rivalries in all sports began in that Bird-Magic NCAA championship game and continued at the highest level of the NBA, the Playoffs for the next few years. It was the point where basketball was at the pinnacle in my estimation. And call it the aligning of the stars or just a freak-out of nature, but it was a real thing, perhaps never to be repeated; where two players rose in parallel in their careers and were so much alike; accept for the salt and pepper or ebony and ivory detail.

Mindset and the changing of times/rules. Those of Larry's era could play today. Those of today would not (not could not) play yesterday. Look at the lack of 3 point shots, longer distance from the 3, no blood no foul, playing while hurt, lack of medical advancements, etc.

This guy made some good points in his video but left a LOT of stuff out. Larry essentially played the MAJORITY of his career with a bad back, as he inured it in in 1985. The fact that he was still putting up mvp numbers after that is incredible. Larry was stubborn and cost himself a longer career by not taking great care of his body. But the fact that in 13 years he's in the conversation as the GOAT tells you just how good those 13 years were.

My favorite Larry Bird trash talk was during a game, at a break in the action, he passed by the opposing teams bench and said; "coach why are you disrespecting like that'? the coach asked, "what are you talking about"? Bird: "you're putting a white guy to guard me."

I think today's NBA is more fundamentally sound than it was in the 70's and 80's. Today's NBA play a more Bird like style. Why is today's NBA better at fundamentals. I think you can clearly see Bird's impact on the sport even in today's NBA.

Larry Bird's ISU team made the NCAA finals with one other player (Carl Nicks) who went on to play in the NBA. Meanwhile, Magic Johnson's MSU team had five future NBA players. So Johnson was playing on the better team.

Remember, it was only two to one in Lakers vs Celtics. One of those series Mchale had two fractured ankles, parish was hurt, they had lost their draft pick that off season in Len Bias, and had no bench. I would take Mchale over Worthy any day of the week. The loss of Len Bias was monumental in giving Magic’s Lakers the edge.
