Every person is unique, which means each budget is unique. Today, I am talking about my budget categories, and how I organize my spending.
As an all-cash spender, the budget I set for each category can sometimes include my regular bill payments AND the cash I spend from my cash envelopes. I lump them together to create one monthly budget limit for each category.
I am hoping this video will give you some ideas on how to organize and categorize your spending and budget.

When I was going through my debt free journey, I used my food and restaurant envelopes like crazyyy. But now that I'm debt free, I use a credit card responsibly (pay it off EVERY month) and use those points. I also use receipt envelopes instead to keep track of my spending in a tangible way. It helps me see it at home and online. Thanks for sharing your envelope system!

I also have determined that keeping my budget for fuel expenses in my checking account is easier than take my LO inside. If I took her inside each time it would just increase the amount of $ spent on fun. I use the non-envelope tracker to track my fuel and car wash expenses I just tuck it inside a card slot in my wallet and write it down before leaving.

So after that I was able to put the right amount on my cash "cards" envelope. I do a card by envelop like: food = Maxi gift card Drugstore = Jean Coutu gift card ⛽️ = Petro-Canada or Master Card gift card etc. etc. I prefer that than have 1000$ in cash on me 😬

@@mariebeaulieu7789 Good idea! Thats what I thought about doing was ONLY having a wawa giftcard for gas. a publix one for groceries. Something like that. I KNOW if I keep shopping for groceries at walmart or target Ill venture into the other departments and can easily get distracted and spend on unnecessary items..I know it sounds like I have no self control..I do but its just getting into a routine for a while and getting focused. Hopefully with time I can start shopping at those types of places but right now to get in a good spot I feel like I need to do that.

Miko, could you please do a video on how you created your highlighted debt tracker in your background? I would like to do that but for tracking my savings goal. The highlighter colors look like art and I like coloring. Thank you! 😁 Also, I really think I should start doing an expense tracker like yours. Except for my sinking funds and savings I mainly use my credit card because of the cash back I get which I could also use for paying off my bill (can't say no to free money hehe). But a tracker would really be helpful for me so I don't go over budget on groceries. 😊

Maybe it only exists where I live, but for the gas, there are a few gas stations that are “with service”. You pull up, there is an employee that greats you (while you stay in your car). You say how much you want (I want $30 of gas). They fill it up for $30, you pay in cash and leave. No need to leave your car💃🏽 Great for the winter months😂

Hi me Miko, I have a question regarding organizing your categories. I have an issue where I have sinking funds that are covering for something that I paid for with my debit card . I don’t know what category to call it in order to flag it for later on when I pull money from those stinking funds and deposit it into my checking account to cover for purchases that I had to do with a debit versus money in my sinking funds. if this makes sense please me help me I am not quite sure how to categorize that spending

Maybe having a separate category called "Family Clothing" as a sinking fund might help. Also I try to give most of the clothing they need for the season for their birthdays and Christmas. Maybe I am a boring mom....lol.....but it works for us....we have a minimal wardrobe.

The only thing I do not understand is this: usually you buy food and household supplies at the same store. But you have two different envelopes for these things. Do you separate those things at the checkout and pay twice from two different envelopes? Or do you pay all things and afterwards you put money from one envelope to the other? That would be interesting to know for me. Thanks and regards from Germany! 🍀

For gas, I find it easier to use my dc. I tried cash and I had to stop and get gas more frequently since I was not filling up the tank. I do not have kiddos but it was a lot of work to stop, go into the store then pump. Does any one else feel this way? I would rather take less trips to the gas station since I was filling up my tank at each trip but I see a lot of people have gas envelopes.
@gentry8907
@gentry8907 5 жыл бұрын
Linda Morris-Barbee you can always over pay with cash at the register, fill up your tank, then go back inside and they’ll refund you the difference. It’s two trips inside, sure, but if you want to make it a cash expense it’s a possibility. Or if you’re like me and have no self control and can’t leave any extra in your account because it’ll get spent on stupid stuff then it’s what you have to do 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️

Miko, I know you put sinking funds as category “savings” when you pull the cash out to put in the envelopes-but how do you categorize envelopes like food/gas/beauty - for the transaction pulling the money from the bank and putting into the envelopes??? Is it a “dnc” coming out of the bank ET and putting in the the cash ET??
@Hurrygoon
@Hurrygoon 5 жыл бұрын
Amy Peters She tracks the transaction on her checking account track so she can see the transaction and to keep her checking account balance accurate. But when she goes to do the budget breakdown she does not include the transaction into a category. If she did it would be counting it twice. And it would show up as an being over budget. She has an Instagram video that explains this. I believe it’s called common mistakes or mistakes most commonly made?? I myself did this the first time around and I was like there’s no way I’m over X amount of dollars because it would show as a negative in my bank account and my envelopes. So you track your checking and your cash expenses separately which she shows in her videos too then when you close out your monthly budget you’ll see it all come together. Hope that helps

I know this was to the creator but on another vid I did see that for "fun money" they put the certain amount in the envelope and say you put $100 but you know you want to go to say an activity that will cost $200 then you would either save that money for 2 months or spend less than the 100 each month then eventually you will have the extra 200 to go wherever it is. hope that made sense

People can’t leave their kids in the car to pay for gas? You’re literally gone for 60 seconds lol. Don’t worry that’s not all I got out of this video 🤣

What do you do if you go to one place but buy things in multiple categories? For example, if you went to Walmart and bought some groceries and some household goods. Do you pull cash from the same envelope when paying and then just use the receipt to reconcile things when you get home?

I’ve seen some people in other videos say they will just do separate transactions at the store. Complicated, but then don’t have to reconcile.

I personally just do separate transactions. That way things don't get mixed up and I can categorize my receipts and I know exactly what I spend at the end of the month in each category!😊❤

I use cash envelopes and that's what I do. However, I know some people who use cash envelopes do multiple transactions and take multiple or both envelopes with them so they have the receipt for each envelope.

I think it all depends on how many envelopes you're willing to make and have on you, as well as how deeply organized and thorough you're trying to be

I know for me it’s easier and more disciplined to separate the items in their categories and pay separately. Because otherwise it opens up the door for me to be less disciplined and not follow through with replacing the category. Or sometimes I get squirrel brain. So for me it’s just easier to do it from the very beginning.
