That’s amazing to hear you’re getting onto the sidelines! I’m sure those kids and parents really appreciate it. Don’t feel like you necessarily need to purchase an FX3 or anything too expensive like that. I use one for my work as a professional, but as a hobbyist in a situation like yours a less expensive body like the FX30 or even mirrorless camera that is a generation older like the Sony A7iii off the used market can work great. I used to shoot with the A7iii and 70-200mm f4 all the time (watch some of my older basketball videos on this channel) and the results were definitely suitable for your needs. Hi there! Don’t think I have a video specifically touching on that but between the two I’d go for a hi-hat. I’m all for mobility and portability and find the smaller package to be less restricting. I generally use a monopod if filming at longer focal lengths or go handheld because I like moving around the field a lot and sometimes have to film from a higher vantage point over sideline video boards, but for high school football I imagine that isn’t going to be an issue for you.

Often times I use S&Q in pregame and post game when there’s copyrighted music playing in the background because I won’t be able to use the audio in those cases anyways and S&Q saves space

“Best” is subjective. I have them all and think they’re all great. Just depends on your environment, look you want, lenses you’re using, etc

Honestly Canon and Sony are both really good. I don’t know your exact situation so it’s tough for me to recommend a specific camera over another but I’d just roll with whatever brand ecosystem you’re already in with your lenses and other accessories

I usually use it in 4k60 crop mode if I’m filming action where I’ll be whipping the camera so it’s not too bad for that. If I’m using the full sensor I’ll generally be filming on a gimbal or tripod so rolling shutter isn’t much if a factor. Honestly though your average viewer doesn’t watch a video and think “wow that rolling shutter is bad” so as long as it doesn’t look abysmal I don’t stress myself out about it.

Yes I do sometimes and it can create a bit of vignetting but nothing too bad in my experience

@@petersarellas thanks for getting back to me, I also have a question about how you expose in 12800 on the fx3 without getting too much noise in shadows?

The A7C is basically an A7iii with a few different cosmetic features and when I had my A7iii I typically wouldn’t let my ISO get above 6400, ideally keeping it at 3200 or lower. If you can shoot at the base ISO on the A7C (pretty sure it’s ISO 500 in slog3) that would be ideal for maximizing dynamic range. An easy way to achieve this outside is to get a variable nd filter, then instead of adjusting ISO to maintain exposure you can twist the ND filter to let more or less light hit the sensor while keeping your ISO constant. This will also prevent spikes in brightness as your exposure adjustments will be gradual. I hope this helps.

Pretty much all the time if I’m shooting alone. If I’m shooting with others who don’t have them or if I’m going to have to match other cameras then I don’t so that the look is consistent.

It can definitely work, especially on a crop sensor camera! It might be ideal sometimes to get tighter but isn't necessarily needed.

I don’t think 120-300mm f2.8 is an available lens for Sony E, though there are so many lenses that I may be wrong. 400mm f2.8 is great for photo but for video I value having a zoom lens that lets me stay versatile as the action moves towards me. Auto WB is definitely a killer for video, especially if it decides to change in the middle of a shot, though I see why that’d be nice for photo.

Are you seeing noise before or after grading your footage? And is your image overexposed by 1.67 stops? Would be difficult to direct you on exact settings to change without having your camera in my hands but maybe I can get an idea

@@petersarellas I am seeing it after. This is my second time using the camera. I'm not sure if I overexposed. if i wasn't would that make the image have more noise. do you have a video explaining your settings for slog 3?

Not sure off the top of my head what the record time is for 4k120 from a Sony mirrorless camera on a 128GB SD card but I can tell you that I shoot a mix of mostly 4k60 and 4k120 and end up with about 100-120gb of footage for one football game. That is shooting with 2 cameras each with a 128GB SD card.

I agree that on a crop sensor a 70-200mm is too telephoto for basketball. The 24-105mm would probably be more suitable for that camera in that environment

As long as you have sufficient light to expose your image at f4 given the FX30’s low light performance I don’t see why not!

@@lgproductions4634 you have to buy an ND filter that blocks more stops of light. Almost all variable ND filters, especially cheaper ones, will make that x when turned to their darkest point, so getting one that is a 6-9 stop nd will allow you to block more light than say a 3-5 stop nd will without giving you that x. Higher quality nd filters also perform better in this regard so if you shoot outside a lot id advise looking into one of those
