It's been 6 months since I bought my compressor and nailer, and in this video I talk about why I bought what I did. Enjoy!
For clarity, I'm talking about the 8-litre Hyundai HY5508 240v compressor - I have no direct experience of the larger units.

And, ps: one thing I love about this channel is that although you have high-end stuff, you recognise both that the budget stuff has its place (and you keep us away from the real rubbish) and that this is particularly important for us hobby guys who might desire the better tools but often can’t justify them. Hi Peter Just a note, you should apply about 3 drops of fine oil into the air inlet at the rear of the nailer every time you use it, this lubricants the nailer. I’ve been using them for nearly 50 years and never had any problems with nail or staple guns. Thanks for another informative video👍

ditto. ive spent months deciding if i need a battery nailer but then what type? or a compressor and then the nailers are cheaper. plus you can use compressor for other things too

I've just bought one (SILVERLINE 868544) to use with my small SEALEY 6ltr compressor (SAC0610E). Your own experience using one is good to know about. Thank you, Peter. P. S. Had a go with it this morning (Sat 11.11.23) with c.3/4" brads (60 psi) and was very happy with the result. Not bad at all @ £29.99 with free P&P.

I have an electric nail gun, but with a fence to put up, for the life of me I couldn’t find it. As I have a 25L compressor, I had a quick nose about, and found a Draper Air nail gun for £40/£50. With Saturday already here I had limited options so I bought it. I set it up, and put 30mm nails in it. We were replacing our feather edge fence, and as it was already cut to 6’, off we went. My wife was passing me the boards, and using a self made marker I pinned the boards on. I was so impressed with the set up, the tank lasted ages before it cut back in, and the Draper Nailer was a star performer. Normally I’m a tool snob, my kit is usually DeWalt, my hand tools are Klein, Knipex, Wera etc, but I was so impressed with it. For DIY these tools are fantastic, I can’t recommend the cheaper unit enough.

I have had air nailers for a long time. I recently bought a ryobi battery powered brad nailer and pin nailer to avoid all the setup and noise of a compressor. I have been very happy with both of them. The are reasonably priced in the states. Noticed you had them on the shelf behind the compressor. One advantage of the air nailers I have found is they seem to be able to drive further than the battery powered counterparts if you adjust the air pressure to the higher end of the tool range. I love your videos but they cost me a bloody fortune. Every time you do something like this it tips me over the edge of something I have been thinking about doing for a while. The worst are definitely your gifts for makers videos though. I watch them and then suddenly need all these new tools I didn't even know existed. I am now off to buy a compressor and nailer! Keep up the great work!

I bought a cheap compressor to stand in for one that finally died after 25 years and didn't even notice the plastic on the gauge until I saw this video 🤣. But my compressor is much louder than Peter's.

Good to hear the budget brand being acknowledged by a reputable YT content maker and channel owner. Appreciate there are brands out there which are very dubious but to put all budget brands into the same locker is nonsense.

yup. some are crap but i have found some to be brilliant value for money, not had luck with cheap routers but ive been using a cheapo erbauer track saw for a year and its been great for the cash. 160 as opposed to around 600 is a bit of a difference.

@@kanedNunable when you look at some of the middle of the range brands are made in the same factories as other budget brands then it is only the 'brand' that really changes. Yes some things are not worth scrimping on (the number of cheap clamps I have gone through) but if you have something which is only going to use once a month or even less (my biscuit jointer now has had no use for nearly a year) then what is the point of buy premium brands for them to sit on the shelf

The Brad nailer you featured here is really a DIY tool. If used day in, day out, it wouldn't last very long at all. Pneumatic tools like OMER are used professionally & are priced accordingly. In clear terms, you pay for what you get. In my experience, buying a cheaper tool is false economy as you would probably replace the tool 3 or 4 times before you would have to replace a better tool.

Love the sound of an air nailer! I was thinking of buying a compressor and nailer but as well as using it in my workshop, I wanted to take it out on installs and the thought of lugging it all around put me off a bit. I ended up buying the Makita 10.8v pin nailer, obviously more money than buying a cheap compressor and nailer but it’s been invaluable. It’s no bigger than a cordless drill and the beauty is it uses 23 gauge pins from 15mm up to 35mm, ideal for fixing delicate mouldings and trim. Good review Peter, I still might succumb to a compressor in the workshop 😀

Thanks Peter - my 100L compressor has recently moved from my workshop into the garage, and I'm really missing the air-nailer in the workshop. I bought a Dewalt cordless 1st & 2nd fix nailer set recently but they're so damn heavy and cumbersome compared to the air nailer - I have the Silverline 18ga air nailer too, and I'm no weakling! I'm going to have to buy a small, quiet compressor like yours for workshop bench work and keep the DeWalt twinset for heavier work.

Hi Peter , one other thing for the newbie compressor owners is how dangerous blowing compressed air is directly on to bare skin , as that air can carry lots of bacteria from the condensate that forms in the storage tank . As heat generated in the process of compressing the air help this bacteria to thrive. Also the danger of air embolisms. Please keep the fantastic vlogs coming my friend.

The budget nail guns are fine for DIY or light use, I agree completely. There are many "tool snobs" out there who will disagree, but I have a B&Q Performance Power nail gun in my shed I have used regularly for over 20 years and it has never had any issues. I have a tiny wolf compressor to power it, which is also over 20 years old. Pretty sure I paid about £60 for both. I also have a draper nail gun for larger nails which was under £50 and has now renovated 2 houses with me.

I have the 24 ltr version of the Hyundai brand and it works great for nailing and spraying small object with a Lvlp gun, if you put a 60 mm fuel tube in the airfilter output it reduce the noise more. Great video and thanks Peter for the great review.

Funny...similar compressor I have had the "fuel tube" straight out of the box. Couldn't figure out it's function till I pulled it off. Quite a difference!.... (pun intended)

Thanks for this; informative and succinct as ever. If you have the time and inclination, many of us would really appreciate a piece on the uses of various sizes and types of nail, to staple, commonly used in these tools. Chatting to my pals in the man cave, it became apparent that there is precious little out there on the web about the uses of different fixings, and all of us in t’shed had wildly differing views on what was used and why. Go on, have a stab!

Good video as usual i had a Draper compressor and 16 g nail gun about 25 year's ago they were great only stopped working last year. My new nail gun is battery cost £600 including batteries and charger and i love it i can take it anywhere quick to use and no noise but i know they are not for everyone.

I went through the same thought process recently. Wanted a cordless nailer but when I looked into it, and already having a small compressor, it was a total no brainer. Air tools generally are so much cheaper than their electric equivalents.

I’ve been using the 24ltr model for about 6 months, with a park side nailer…couldn’t live without them now! The really are so quiet compared to a normal unit! My only gripe…the 3 ft cable, exactly the same on the 24 Ltr! Fortunately I only have a small shop so not a huge issue!

Hey Pete top tip on the compressor, I’d started standing outside my shed whilst my old one clunked and banged it’s way up to 5 bar fearing it could let go at any time, Managed to pick up a factory refurbished ( essentially brand new )unit for £280 the new 50 Ltr Hyundai is super quiet in comparison And no where near as scary.👍

Craftsman has a nice 23 GA V20 battery powered that accepts up to 1 3/16” pins (a lot are only 1”) and I own it and love it. Give you complete freedom from cords or hoses, is affordable and is small enough for most application.

Hi Peter. Just bought an electric stapler/nailer from Lidl, their Parkside range. Gave it a good trial today & works really well. Not cordless, but £17.99!!!!! Also got their shop vac, has on board power socket so power's on and off with your mitre saw (or jigsaw or whatever) 30litre, really solid construction, £59.99!!!! If one is not a "brand snob" these tools are no brainers.

Excellent intro to compressors and brad guns. I also balked at the eye-watering price of the cordless 23g nailers. Although, I am on the Hitachi and Makita battery platform, I just couldn't justify £300+ outlay on a tool I wouldn't use that often. I toyed with the idea of going down the more affordable compressor route, but just didn't like the idea of the extra space needed, and the noise in a small garage workshop. Might just have another look, as that little compressor didn't sound loud at all. Thanks for sharing.👍

Thanks! Yes, the compressor is actually quieter in use that it appears on this vid because it's under a bench, not at head-height. Very happy with it, and the idea that you can get a 23g nailer and a compressor for half the price of a bare cordless tool seems like a no-brainer, as long as you can fit the compressor in! 👍

Great vids. Always a pleasure to watch. Being commercial photographer like your previous career, I worked on a campaign for Hyundai that used a slogan something like: Hyundai - As in Sunday. Also like you, the business got weird and I do small residential contracting jobs for some years now. The stuff most contractors avoid so the work finds me, I never have to look for it. Sure do miss the fees we could charge ad agencies. Enjoy your 3rd career of entertaining education. Edutainment... A new word?

Great video. Here in the states, our budget budget brand is Harbor Freight(HF). From the video, they had the same nailers. Been using my HF 23gague nailer for about 10 years now on a HF 5gal (Loud!!!) hotdog compressor that is now in a silencing compartment. Cost was about $100 US. for everything. My 18gague is a Ryobi battery operated one. Both work great and I'm not giving them up. One suggestion, For the builder. Understand your workflow and they buy your equipment accordingly. If your not going to be using a compressor for painting, you don't need a big compressor for everything else.

Great video Peter. I actually have the same compressor and brad nailer and completely echo your comments. I originally bought my compressor for running constantly whilst connected to a resin pressure pot and its fantastic - it doesn't wake the house up at 3am whe nit re-pressurises.

Thanks Mark! Yes, very impressed with how quiet the Hyundai is - and how well it seals! With my old noisy stanley I couldn't leave it switched on as it would cut in regularly - with this one I have (accidentally) left it on and not known about it until I came to switch it 'on' again!

Hi, thanks for this great video. The silverline 16g nailer is now over £102inc VAT which is ridiculous. Add the Cost of a compressor, and its well over £250. Better off buying a battery-powered one now. Dewalt 16g bare unit is only around £250. Pneumatic is getting more expensive and battery powered has got a lot cheaper lately. Odds are the short power cord is to limit line loss where lack of power causes undue wear on a motor with "Value Engineered" windings. In other words, the Mfg. is trying to pull the CYA for warranty purposes.

A few years ago I took a punt on a Silverline 18g nailer. I paid around £20 for it, so wasn't expecting much. Well as PM said of his one, mine hasn't missed a beat. It even feels like a quality item when handled. I've had a few different Silverline tools in the last few years and I'd have to say that they've come on a long way.

I bought a stanley 24litre noisy compressor and five tools came with it.Used the spraygun to paint my 4' x 6' house gates finished in no time.Bought 844 silverline nailer for £31 to replace my electric £89 Tacwise nailer cos it started not picking up nails when fired.And as you say the silverline nailer has never missed a beat.

Hi Peter here in Australia we’ve been traditional buyers of oil type of compressors either alloy or cast iron heads and most people I know have either 10-12 cfm which is about the limit on 10 amp 240 volt. They are very much on the limit for spray painting.

I've had the exact same compressor for a while now, driving a Makita nailer and an air duster gun - it's been flawless so far. I do have it sat on a small piece of Yoga mat, which further reduces the noise.

@@10MinuteWorkshop Suspended wooden floor, so the yoga mat just reduced a bit of boom. the Hyundai feet are nice and stable but quite firm, so transmitted vibration a little. Not that it was particularly loud, I was making some systainer padded linings out of a 20mm thick yoga mat I cut up, and there was a handy sized spare bit - tried it and thought yep that's better!

Hi Peter. I bought one of these a while back and can also thoroughly recommend it. The power cord can be replaced if you have some electrical competence, a couple of blade crimps and a ring crimp. Watch out for PCL's "Euro" fittings as there is one that was called "euro" and has very recently been renamed as "A style". As far as I can tell, it matches the American "Industrial" (aka type D or Milton M-style) and is NOT compatible with the Euro fitting on the compressor. PCL's XL fittings are compatible and are being rebranded "XL Euro" (or maybe "Euro XL", I forget which I'm afraid). These aren't silent but you can quite happily have a conversation (usually about how quiet they are) while standing next to it. The non-silent variety you'd be wanting to put ear defenders on....and that's not an exaggeration!

Hi Peter - I think letting off the accumulating water in the tank once and a while… that is one of the basic things to know as well I think / I learned the hard way :-). I recently bought two Senco nailers - those work with a nitrogen cylinder which is brought to pressure with a acuity driven motor for each nail. Effective combination of techniques and nice to use.

My first nailer/stapler (a Stanley Stormforce) I wrecked in just a couple of weeks as I didn't pay enough attention to the air pressure (it was set too high). It didn't help that I did not have an in line oiler fitted. The nailer/stapler combination also left a mark the width of a staple when just using brads so when it failed I bought a separate brad nailer and a stapler and a pair of small inline oilers. Interesting video Peter, I look forward to the follow ups.

Yes, the nailer/stapler striker size thing is the real drawback of them, that and the reduced capacity; separates are definitely preferable 👍

Just got a nailer to go with this hope it works. I tried to use an air hammer, you get literally one second of hammering before the pressure drops off and you have to wait half a minute for it to repressurise.

In the latest version of the Parkside Tracksaw D1 (I believe) which I bought in February 2024. They are now made supplied by OWIM GmbH & Co KG Registergericht Stuttgart as opposed to Kompernass like the others were.. I contacted Owim Service about the possibility of getting 2 additional rails. Get this. They sent me 2 additional rails for FREE as a gesture of goodwill. They asked what was up with the ones I had I said nothing I haven't even used them yet but wanted additional rails for rip cuts. They were sent on a 48hr delivery from Germany by DHL!! Outstanding.. £75 purchase price 2800mm of track with the bars and a 3yr warranty I believe. Made my 1st use of it the other days and it cuts like a dream. Well as good as any 75 pound setup we can buy 🤣. I think I need to calm down with your videos though I'm buying so many tools that I haven't got and I've got lots already 🤣 Thanks Pete

The reason for the short mains cable is to do with voltage drop. Attaching it to an extension cable will void your warranty. Best practice is to plud directly into an outlet and use a longer air line. The actual problem is to do with the current the motor draws, if the cable is capable of supplying the current EG 2.5mm2 no problem, if you put it on an extension these are generally 1.5mm2 and cannot supply the requirement of the motor, this causes the motor to overheat and possibly burn out. Of course you could replace the supplied cord with a 2.5mm2 flex.

I bought a 24l refurbished Hyundai from ebay (paid only approx £110)) about 7 months ago and so far it has been great...Runs a coil nailer fine...I do have a beast of a compressor, 200l sip for spraying cars and air tools but it's isn't very portable for dragging around...

Yes, mo old compressor had that too, but tbh I never touched it as it was very finicky to set right. As I say in the vid, this Hyundai is as close to ‘plug & play’ as you can get. Works great! 👍

Good to know the Silverline pin-nailer is reliable - makes it worth a look. I've been using the 'silent' Hyundai 24L for a couple of years now with an 18-gauge Stanley and it's been faultless as well as quiet when it cuts in - which is good for my heart! The cable was surprisingly short...

Thanks! Yes, I think the Milwaukee ones are straight battery nailers, whereas others, like the Ryobi, are actually battery-powered compressors, hence the wirring and relative slowness. 👍

Nice intro to compressors/nailers It's a 10 minute (workshop) job to replace the mains cable on the Hyundai compressors - I replaced mine with 4m of flexible rubber-sheathed 1.5mm H05RR-F (cost under £7 delivered). Should also mention that nailers need an occasional drip or two of oil.

I've got two super cheap 18 gauge air nailers, and the second one I got because the first one was terrible! It can definitely be hit or miss with cheap nailers.

It’s not just the tank size that matters for spraying but also the pumping speed or volume (cubic feet/minute) This also makes a big difference for the little air gun and even bigger framing nail guns. My first compressor had a 1 gallon tank but I was able to do smaller spraying jobs and use large nail guns because the pump was fast.

A gallon is only 4.5 litres - this is almost twice the size, and I don’t recommend it for spraying. 🤷‍♂️

For sure! Not as a recommendation. My little compressor pumped 2.6 cubic feet per minute, many little compressors do less than 1, which in essence means the pump is on much longer to fill a tank of the same size. For air spraying I believe you need at least 4 cubic feet/minute. Even with a big tank, be sure the pump is also up to the task

I have the 50L twin motor version of this compressor and its fantastic. I paid about £220 for it when it was on special offer. Mine also has the ridiculously small cable but I was under the impression it was something to do with power consumption / Amps when the motors kick in. I have to have it plugged in directly to an outlet as it blows all the house electrics if plugged in to an extension lead.

That compressor is impressively quiet Peter for the price, you didn’t need to raise your voice. I can’t even do that with mine and I only use it outside to inflate the car tyres! 😂. It’s a shame you missed out on the Mirka visit with Keith & Leo, I saw Keith’s video, it looked like an interesting day.

My understanding was always that you run an outlet to the device and not having a 10m cables everywhere coiled up, loose on the ground and wrapped around the devices themselves. In the case of an absolute must, it's always easier to extend the connection than shorten the cables.

I bought a cheap corded nailer. It was horrible to use and didn’t last. I then bought the Ryobi 18v nail gun as I already had other Ryobi tools including battery and charger. There has been no looking back. It takes up very little space and there is freedom of use. For me it’s a no brainer. I see you have one on the shelf behind you.

Yep, cheap corded ones have never failed to disappoint. I like my Ryobi air strike stapler, less so the 16g nailer. Also really rankles how cheap these tools are in the US, when they ask DeWalt and Makita money for the identical tool here in the UK. 🤷‍♂️👍

A compressor gives so much flexibility to the job, running different gauge guns, air blowers and even tyre inflators.👍 ps.
