I looked through the comments and was surprised that no one gave you the story behind this song. (Unless I overlooked). The song is about the death of Gerard's (lead singer) and Mikey's (bassist) grandmother. They were very close and she was a strong supporter if the band. Even bought them their first van to tour in. They were out on tour during the last year of her life when she got sick and died. Gerard couldn't forgive himself and wrote this song as a way to express the anger he felt at himself for not being there with her in the end. It was also a way for them to say goodbye to her. Her name was Helena.. or possibly Elaina. She was a ballerina. And the dance down the aisle in the video is supposedly reminiscent of a dance she performed in the past. It also symbolizes her soul having one last dance before it departs. All of MCR's songs and albums have very deep meanings and tell a story. Knowing that story makes the songs hit harder for me. Even songs of theirs that I didn't like the first time, I now love because I get the meaning now.

There are so many good songs. Both Famous Last Words and The Ghost of You are pretty popular. I’m Not Okay and Teenagers were some of their biggest songs. I’m personally a big fan of I Don’t Love You. MCR was the band I clung onto in my early teens, so they hold a special place in my heart ❤️

To try to answer your question (and I recommend just checking out the wiki page for Emo for a brief synopsis), emo refers to a type of rock music that focuses on exploring dark themes and emotions like insecurity, social isolation death, feeling like an oucast, emotional turmoil, etc. As grunge rock was the soundtrack for 90's teenage angst and rebellion, emo (and punk rock) were the soundtrack of teenage angst in the 2000s. Given the topics these songs are about, in terms of style, it takes heavy influence from gothic aesthetics and yes Tim Burton being the king of modern gothic aesthetics in the US means his works are very influential in the genre! Other bands that are in the genre/ closely associated with it that had mainstream success are Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Paramore, and Evanescence, though many groups have transitioned to more of a traditional rock or pop sound in recent years, if they're even still around. While emo is still around today, it definitely has fallen out of the mainstream since the early 2010s. There's a lot more that can be said, but that's the gist of it. As a former black emo kid myself, I'm happy to see the genre getting some recognition again, especially amongst other black folk!

MCR does have a new song, Foundations of Decay. They are in the midst of a tour and recently sold out 5 dates at The Forum in LA in October. They're really great live and I was lucky enough to get tickets to go. This band was the soundtrack of my teens/early 20's and to this day I still adore them. This tour was highly anticipated by fans.

They're not emo brother, they're just one of those bands that take you on a musical trip, they're gun's and roses ,queen, lenny kravitz, the clash, the Ramones all bashed up together

PLEASE react to more MCR!!! If you really want a good example of how great of a singer Gerard is check out Cancer or Desert Song. I saw them live right before they broke up the band back in 2011 I think. They sang Cancer as their last song and looking back they knew that was probably their last tour it gives that song a whole new meaning "the hardest part is leaving you" 😭 Edit: They did do a reunion tour a couple years back but they are by no means an active band anymore. Gerard has released some solo stuff and went on to become a successful comic artist even getting his own show on Netflix "Umbrella Academy"

I myself am considered an "emo", and ya we are still around. The great thing about MCR is they transcend the sub-culture and went mainsteam. At the end of the day, we all get a little emotional and can relate to powerful, hurting, and introspective lyrics.

Emo is also a reference to a culture of people, not only who were into dark themes and whatnot, but who were very into dressing in a similar aesthetic to the people in this video. Dark black, with heavy makeup that makes them look very pale, vampiric. Emo was also used in a derogatory manner to describe people were always depressed and suicidal(think the non-conformist emo kids from South Park).

Lmao the emotional rollercoaster I watched you go through made my day xD Music is the most powerful energy there is. Oh yeah ..and that's what emo music is... its some EMOtional shit you can listen to when you need to normalize yourself. I know all music touches base on stuff but emo is more directed at people that want to feel a connection with people that can just emotionally relate to the day to day bullshit we go through. The term emo could be used for every genre of music ..country music for example is what a lot of truckers, farmers, county boys listen too because they relate to what they're hearing. This is why I say music is the most powerful energy. God bless you 🙌

One more vote for “The Ghost of You” as your next MCR reaction - the aesthetic of it is very much a departure from the two you’ve seen so far, but it’s still amazing (full disclosure, I was a goth kid in high school and went through a full-blown emo phase in college, so the aesthetic from this video and WttBP is very much my thing).

Probably going to get some flask for this, but as an old-schooler it seems Emo is a louder, more flamboyant version of Goth back in the day. I appreciate My Chemical Romance though.

I could agree that all the emo music and emo kids back in the early 2000s(I was one too😅) were just in that confused adolescent/pubescent stage and had that "no one could possibly understand me" mentality and just wanted some attention. Just my opinion though.

Goth rock goes back way further than MCR. Joy Division, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy. 80’s post punk. MCR is closer to pop punk and emo with a goth aesthetic and influence maybe.
