My Chevy Volt Was DANGEROUSLY Close To An ACCIDENT

In the year since I bought my 2017 Chevy Volt the tires have gone from okay to outright dangerous (but only on the outside tread blocks). Chunks were coming out of the tires and I could see cords through them. So today we're going to solve that problem after doing a little work on a Mercedes SLR McLaren.

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZfaq videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

They make both a fantastic high performance SUV summer tire (best wet weather performance tire I have experienced and I have had all of the high end Michelin and Continental tires on various high performance SUVs) as well as a very good high performance snow tire that on my old M3 would do better in the snow than 4WD Tahoes on all seasons.

Nothing else I had up to that point had the grip I got from those tires. I am currently running Firestone winter tires that came on my car but when it comes to replacing them I will be looking to see if Vredestien makes tires in the correct size and they will be my first choice.

I bought my 03 Pontiac Vibe with 121,000 miles on the odometer. I've put roughly 200,000 on it since and I've never changed the brakes. I don't know if they are original or not, but the brakes are still going strong. That's what happens when you commute 110 miles round trip daily for years and rarely need to use your brakes. We put well over 100,000 miles on my wife's 07 Yaris, it had about 221,000 on it at the time, and only changed the brakes because we were heading to the mountains. That was a wise decision :-).

Pads and rotors lasting on vehicles with regen braking is a very nice bonus, however it really varies by vehicle. Recently Ford had to update the braking software on the Mach E so that it will use the pad and rotor once in a while just to keep the surface clean. There have been multiple reports of people who live in the snow-belt areas where the rotors would rust over because the regen braking was practically all the vehicle ever used. And Ford wouldn't replace them under warranty, as they said "normal wear and tear".

Years ago I put 165k on the original brakes on a 94 Toyota base truck (the Tacoma was introduced in 95). I downshifted a lot to slow down, so the original brakes never got changed, but the rear drums were adjusted once. They would have gone longer had I not wrecked and totaled the truck out (hydroplaned and hit a median barrier, brakes not an issue in the accident).

My other half's '17 Cruze Premier still has it's OE 18" tires as we swap it between winter and summer when the seasons dictate. The '17 Cruze LT I just got a few months ago doesn't have it's stockers on it but it has new 16 inch tires all around...and since I work at a tire shop I'll probably be investing in winter tires for it too, both Cruzes are incredible econo cars that look and feel not so much like econo cars and I believe there's some similarities between the Volt and Cruze.

I bought Sumitomo H speed rated tires for my Dart many years ago because I wanted really wanted super nice handling tires that would be very grippy. They had a 220 wear rating and 130 speed rating. Loved those tires, got about 18k on them 😢 I had put poly bushings and factory front and rear sway bars on it so I wanted the tires to keep up with the improved suspension. The next set I went with regular much higher rated tires and got about 30k and ended up blowing the belts on both front tires.... I guess I was having too much fun carving corners and generally driving it like I stoled it with the 318 with a Thermo Quad and reworked distributor and a 3.23 sure grip in the back and 340 exhaust... 😉

Gm suggests annual oil change regardless of mileage LOL... it's synthetic oil and the engine automatically does a 10 min maintenance operation about every 60 days or so, for coolant, fuel, oil, and seals, if it is not being used so why would I change my synthetic oil & filter just because 12 months went by, NO! They also want me to do an air filter change rather than inspecting to see if it is dirty (which it never is but I blow it out anyway)

Vredesteins are "cheap tires" they may not be the most expensive but I've had 3 sets on 3 different cars and they are very good indeed - some of the best tires in the snow (without them being snow tires) I've ever had and wet performance is very good too. They're sometimes a bit on the noisy side but other than that I've no complaints - I'm actually running oversized (from stock) wheels and tires on my 2018 Mini JCW F56 and am very impressed with the performance (although just about anything is better than the run-flats that Mini uses as stock ASRs) The pricing for the sizes and models I purchased (also for TireRack) were squarely in the middle of the pricing for tires on the site - I paid about $175-$195 per tire but stepped up a version over the least expensive in that brand.

Most tires are pretty quiet when new and loud when they're worn out. Report back on these tires when you get some miles on them. I was shopping for an E46 M3 in 2003. The SMG was $6K more and there was a 6 month wait for one. I was going with a regular manual if I went that route. Now people are throwing away the SMG. I hear they are $6K to fix if they fail. It's probably not cheap to have it converted to a regular manual either. I ended up going with a C5 Z06 just like the car you bought as the supercharger test mule.

Vredestuin is a Dutch manufacturer of tyres with a big range of tyres from bike to hypersportscars. Quality is premium, depending on which model you take they have good to very good performance. Just depends which application and which model you choose how good they are. No Chinese manufacturing I believe, all made in the EU. Vredestein’s name is a little old. When I would translate it to English they would call peacevillage or something, although the “stein” part has a littlebit elite/historical vibe to it. In Europe they are almost on par with Michelins with price and performance in the A-tier. So if you got them cheap in the US, they are buying themselves in the market?

I use full synthetic oil in my car and truck and change them each every 5,000 miles and still have 40%-50% oil life left at 5,000 miles. Even with full synthetic I don’t think it’s good to go more than 5,000-6,000 miles and I think it’s neglectful to go until the oil percentage is zero or close to it.

Interesting your girlfriend gets to charge for free. I'm on my second gov agency and when building a new building, we are told with all the "green" things they have to do, they cannot install charging stations because the government doesn't pay for people's gas. Only place I saw free charging was for recruiters' CMAX, which never got used because the charging station was locked in the motorpool.
