The clownfish are spawning regularly! I love that they are on a schedule...but I'm running out of hatch tanks!
Thanks for checking out my ongoing series cover my attempts at raising baby clownfish. My DaVinci Clownfish have been spawning regularly for the past 6 months and I'm trying to better my practice each time I get the chance. Rearing clownfish fry has been a bit more difficult than I anticipated but I continue to learn each time!
Huge thanks to everyone who has helped along the way. We'll take a deep dive with some clownfish breeding experts soon. When you get the chance, check out Robert King's Clownfish on Facebook below.

That's why clownfish have so many eggs.. because less than 1% survive in the wild. You're on par with the wild be proud!
@so_so_reef
@so_so_reef 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard numerous times that the first few clutches are often "weak" and fail. It could be that the clowns learn and gain experience in how to raise eggs over the first few clutches. Perhaps the parents do not oxygenate the eggs properly or do not clean them sufficiently during development, meaning they've suffered oxygen deficiencies or experience infections on hatching, resulting in high fry mortality. As a result of this early inexperience, clownfish may have also evolved to produce lower quality fry in those first few spawns so as not to waste resources on offspring that have high rates of attrition. For example, the female could invest nutritionally less into each egg and so the fry hatch with smaller yolk sacks. This is all speculation but you asked for some possible biological explanations :D

THANK YOU! This is what I'm after. Anecdotal evidence only gets you so far. I always want to know WHY and there is so much "I do this and this and it always works for me..." - but WHY does it work? I appreciate the explanation. I think she's relatively new to spawning so that could be the issue. I just don't know when she actually started laying. Since I moved them to the clay pot I'm on her 4th clutch.

In nature there is "K/R theory of selection". this theory is a trade off of the reproductive health and fitness of offspring and quantity. Humans, elephants are classed as K-selection as they have single offspring and look after them for many years. R selection are creatures such as rabbits, and rats or clownfish. They produce a lot of offspring and only very few survive due lack of genetic fitness leading to illness and/or predation. The majority of offspring are not genetically "fit" under optimum conditions; and thus, won't make it to adulthood in the wild. When we breed aquarium fish we actually get statistically higher numbers of offspring that reach adulthood compare to the wild. However, When we are breeding there are many factors that can affect the conditions we breed in. We loose a large precent. when we start breeding as we have to find optimum conditions. Ensuring stability in tank parameters and healthy enriched food supply was key when I use to breed. I would only get 1 fish per batch. I ended up taking the rock out each time (careful not to allow them to touch air) and put them into another tank with water from the main tank. I did water changes in the breeding breeding tank and then used the breeding tank water for the the babies grow tank. I eventually got about 20-30% survival, generally because I was a bit lazy. I love watching the stripes develop. My first clownfish baby was a A. percula which turned out a miss-bar, round 20 years ago. Keep up the great work!

I would suspect that nutrition ( or lack of) is the reason that only one fry survived, especially because they all made it past the first day. I would pay special attention to what you feed the parents ( enriching food with fatty and nutrient rich additives like selcon may help). Also be sure that the rotifers you feed out are completely gut-loaded with algae paste shortly before you feed them out. Rotifers only take about 2 hours to digest algae paste , and they are most nutritionally dense while it’s still in their system.

I'm a marine ecologist but, to be fair, I don't work with clownfish. I'd say your ammonia hypothesis makes sense; maybe ammonia was a bit high and as a few die, that creates a positive-feedback for ammonia levels until you notice all of the mortality. Then you are only left with a couple (by chance, 1 each time in your case). Them being so sensitive to ammonia makes sense in that they are pelagic plankton post-hatching, during which time they would be in highly nutrient-poor waters in nature.
@BahamaLlamaCoral
@BahamaLlamaCoral 3 жыл бұрын
Coincidence for the 1 remaining fish then. I will say this...I just had another clutch hatch on Tuesday (not shown in this video) and have 3 remaining. Used Prime in that batch so maybe there's something to the ammonia thing.

@@BahamaLlamaCoral I wonder if oxygenation and temperature are interacting with the ammonia?; as ammonia spikes, it consumes oxygen (by way of nitrification), which in concert with higher temperatures could be dropping the dissolved oxygen below levels that the larvae can handle. High available dissolved oxygen levels are pretty important for other marine larvae.

What actually got me into reefing was about 10 years ago my dad and I would raise clownfish. It might be cannibalism. Saw a TedTalk video on this - specially for frogs and fishes. The dominant fry eats others so it doesn't have to compete for food. Makes it grow faster. Happened with my betta fry as well - there were a dozen and then overnight the number dwindled to two. Maybe you have to add more food but then clean the water fast enough that you don't get ammonia? Not sure though.

I have a black snowflake clown and a flurry clown paired , that just started laying eggs. My first time at this, I’m going to try switching the rock the eggs are on into my quarantine tank the sixth night. First round of eggs the clowns ate them all the sixth night.....I think🤔.

You might try just observing the first 2-3 clutches. See how long till the hatch. If they are spawning regularly you'll have a lot of practice. Robert's method might actually work well in your case.

The parents would just eat them upon hatching in the tank...so that's kinda how I ease my mind.

Thats why clown fish lay so many eggs because a lot May not find favriable condiciones so most of the time only 1 or 2 May Survive. And other factors people sont come at me because i realize theres other reasons that might cause this.

Would it be ideal to have a 5 gallon tank set aside ready to take the clownfish eggs out the reef tank and let them grow a little bit in the small tank ??

I tried it and definitely needed a DC pump to control the flow. I feel like that's the best way to do it though. Let the parents bring the eggs to maturity.

Maybe try a Vossen larvae trap- I hear people have great success with those, and that’s what I’m planning to use if my guys ever restart spawning.

My only worry with that is if there will be any eggs left that last night before hatch. She gets a taste on the last day and starts the egg buffet. Definitely buying to have though.
@neilphillips3193
@neilphillips3193 3 жыл бұрын
@@BahamaLlamaCoral I don’t think she will have developed a taste for them- it’s more that they can sense a ‘bad’ batch, and they consume the nutrients to reprocess for next time, instead of letting them rot. Lots of animals- including mammals- do this. I have experience with research mice, and they do it, and I used to breed Danio zebra fish and they would occasionally do it if someone got sloppy with light discipline. I don’t recall ever having a particular specimen that was a consistent eater though. Although, you’ll know for sure in about 4 weeks I guess. Good luck!
