I’ve had some people ask what I use to write my music. In this video I go through the computers, monitors, hard drives, MIDI controllers, audio interface, and audio speakers I use.
All music in the video is by yours truly

Hey David, you asked about our hardware setups, and I won't get too detailed, but I'm amazed how many things I have are similar or same as yours, lol! I did just get my new build done, going to try a 1 computer setup like you mentioned (24-core 13900 CPU, 128GB DDR5 and 4 separate NMVe 4.0 drives for sample libraries... we'll see how long I can run solo!). So I've got the big curved, Dell, HD650s, the Neuman 2.1 digital system quite similar to your Genelec set up with a mic and DSP, and I have a Stream Deck. And of course an RME interface with the USB ARC controller. But here's the kicker: I have the EXACT same IKEA desk, in Birch, and the curve on the left slightly covering the left corner of my 88-key controller, lol! I think that curve is uniquely amazing because I also have my CC faders on the left like you, and the curve gets it a touch closer and allows an ergonomic slant to the fader unit, which feels more comfortable. Too bad IKEA discontinued that desk, it's like a composer's dream for WAY cheaper. Thanks for sharing! If my setup is similar to your then I'm happy, I'm on the right track!
@DavidKudellMusic
@DavidKudellMusic Жыл бұрын
Hey Paulie, thanks for sharing! Wow, we do have a similar setup! Glad you share my love for the Ikea desk, it really is great and you're exactly right about that curve. I'm going to hold on to it as long as I can! I think it's like 20 years old at this point. :)

Hey David, thanks for sharing your set up with us…. I also have an iMac and I mounted a OWC Dock on the back of it... If I may suggest Velcro instead of the tape, it holds really good. Plus you can become portable with that 8TB drive if you need to take it somewhere else by just popping it off of the Velcro, and then put it back on when you return to your studio not to mention it’s a much cleaner look, just a suggestion… Keep up the good work I would like to see more tutorial videos… Thanks

What a great breakdown along with some invaluable practical advice on backup redundancy. For a future computer upgrade are you waiting for a Mac Studio refresh or the upcoming Mac Pro? I'm guessing you're wanting more than 128GB of RAM.
@DavidKudellMusic
@DavidKudellMusic Жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad it was helpful. When it’s time to upgrade I’ll probably go with Mac Studio - just waiting for VEPro to be Apple Silicon native which should be in the next few months hopefully. I used to want a Mac Pro but now with my 2 trash can Mac Pros as VEP servers, these hold all my samples so I don’t really need my DAW computer to be such a beast.

Been writing music since I was in high school, scored student films in college, and some the occasional thing here and there while I was a commercial video producer. But I didn't pursue composing as a full time career until 2020 after winning the Westworld contest.

Just saw your video and it was great, but being an OG and learning so this stuff, I only have an iMac 2015, 32gb ram, 1tb. Learning from videos and you and have Logic with my first library of Opus Edition, which was on sale and I couldn’t afford OT or Spitfire, etc. was thinking of Inspire 1&2 when a sale comes up. But for a question, have you gotten your Mac Studio and I wanted a MacBook Pro but the with that price I can buy Inspire. I’m going to IKEA and look for a desk like yours or similar. Anyway, apologies I know you have more important things to do but it’s encouraging to learn and listen and be encouraged🙏🏾

hey David! thank you for sharing your setup :) I’m wondering how you were able to set up Cubase so that the click volume is adjustable via a CC fader. That is super useful!!
@DavidKudellMusic
@DavidKudellMusic Жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, sure thing. It's under Studio Setup. Wherever your MIDI controller is listed (usually it's a generic remote). You can select the fader you want to use there, and on the bottom box, for device select "Metronome" then Channel/Category select "Device" and Value/Action select "clickLevel."

Hi Enjoyed your videos. You were talking about your next video that should cover your template. Did you finished it?
@DavidKudellMusic
@DavidKudellMusic 11 ай бұрын
Thank you. I haven't finished the next video yet, but I am working towards it. I got a new Mac Studio M2 so my template totally changed. I've been using VEPro directly on the Studio and it has been working great. But I'm also building the whole template as disabled tracks so I can run benchmarks comparing the two approaches. Building the whole template again takes forever, and I've been working on scoring projects as well. But I'll be able to present the pros and cons of both approaches and hopefully help some folks make decisions on upgrades.
@stigc56
@stigc56 11 ай бұрын
@@DavidKudellMusic Yes building new templates takes forever. I also bought the Mac Studio - the M1 - and now I consider trashing my old MacPro12 server and only keep my PC server for the VSL strings. Don't you think it's a challenge to use the VEPro set-up with a few instances holding all your instruments? I really need the instrument track in Cubase, that links perfectly to the mixer. My temp. is on around 700 tracks and although I have a really extended Metagrid set-up I struggle with clarity in the process.

Hi, i saw there's a tab named: Offbeat 8th in your metagrid, is select all the 8th note in the editor i believe. may i know how u set it up?Thanks
@DavidKudellMusic
@DavidKudellMusic Жыл бұрын
You need to set up a logical preset with these settings: Line 1: Filter Target: Type Is. / Condition: Equal / Parameter 1: Note / Bool: And Line 2: Filter Target: Position / Condition: Cycle / Bar Range: PPQ / Bool: And Line 3: Filter Target: Position / Condition: Inside Bar Range / Parameter 1: 240 / Parameter 2: 360 / Bool: Or Line 4: Filter Target: Position / Condition: Inside Bar Range / Parameter 1: 720 / Parameter 2: 840 / Bool: Or Line 5: Filter Target: Position / Condition: Inside Bar Range / Parameter 1: 1200 / Parameter 2: 1320 / Bool: Or Line 6: Filter Target: Position / Condition: Inside Bar Range / Parameter 1: 1680 / Parameter 2: 1800 / Bool: Or At the bottom, choose "select." The process for the Offbeat 16ths is the same, you just need to use these numbers: 120-240 360-480 600-720 840-960 1080-1200 1320-1440 1560-1680 1800-1920
@DavidKudellMusic
@DavidKudellMusic Жыл бұрын
Essentially, a measure in the Logical editor is 1920 long, each beat is 480 long. So once you know that, you can figure out the numbers needed to select the area you want.
