My Conversion Story - From Evangelical Protestant to Catholic (Christian Testimony)

I am so excited to share my own Catholic conversion story in today's video! Books linked at the bottom of this description. I did forget to share the biggest problem with Sola Scriptura: Sola Scriptura is not taught in Scripture. Scripture teaches that Scripture is authoritative (2 Tim 3:16), but Scripture does not teach that Scripture is the only authority in the life of a Christian or in the formation of Christian teachings. Scripture shows that the apostles and the leaders of the Church also have authority, and Scripture says that the Church, not Scripture is the “pillar and foundation of truth” (1 Tim 3:15). Many times, Paul exhorted believers to hold fast to his teaching/his example (2 Timothy 2:2, 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 1 Corinthians 11:2). The Council of Jerusalem is the biblical model for resolving disputes and shows, again, the authority of the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit to interpret Scripture and make binding doctrinal decisions. (Acts 15). More about this on my website: filedunderfait...

Thank you for sharing your journey. As a lifelong evangelical baptist (and a minister's kid!), I related to so much of what you said. I have recently been attending an Anglican church and although I love the liturgy and reverence, I still feel something is missing. I have been harbouring a growing desire to explore the Catholic faith but haven't known quite where to start so I really appreciate the book suggestions. Thanks again, and many blessings.

100% understand how some of the discovery and looking at how protestant church is focused towards the sermon became a challenge. Where as the homily is only part of the lead up to the eucharist makes sense. This has likely been one of the biggest turning points that's caused me to explore catholic church. Sermons get longer, personalities get bigger. It doesn't seem Christ focused to me. As a former pastor (15yr ago) I participated in the whole focus around sermons, and thats unfortunate. Doesn't mean people don't come to Jesus and know him through this, but it should not be the focus and build up of a gathering. I see in the catholic church a focus on Christ and community. It's refreshing to see worship focused towards God, and coming to mass as an act of worship instead of "what can I get out of it". Add in like you highlighted the shock of how many splits and denominations there are vs the catholic church. From a spritual stand point it makes sense, protestantism was build on the foundation of separation and splitting the church. So it makes sense that this continues to happen within the protestant tradition. Yet despite challenges and quarrel within the catholic church, it remains one church. Thanks for sharing your story.

@@danielblanchard793 part of what turned me off initially from years of protestant (I was even a pastor) is big personalities and the focus seems to be about preaching. Where as mass I encounter more scripture, more authentic worship, and a reverence I'd never encountered in the protestant church.

@Michelle Antao There is a good series on EWTN called The Heresies. It covers the major attacks on the Catholic Church from within. This is the link to it on demand for $2.99 each (ondemand.ewtn.com/paid/Home/Series/catalog/video/en/the-heresies). It also is broadcast on Thursdays at 5 pm ET. The Church has been persecuted from outside and within. It proves Jesus' saying the gates of hell will not prevail. It also shows hell hasn't stopped trying. We are starting to see the other "churches" also being attacked. Many sold their souls hoping to escape it or maybe hoping to be eaten last. Crazy times. Stay strong in Christ and peace to you.

I was raised Southern Baptist, and my grandmother set my feet on the Path. I became Episcopalian in college. That was back in the 1960s. In 2002 I was confirmed Catholic. It was mother Mary who invited me to her Son's church. I can attest to the feeling of gratitude for coming home to His church. And the joy and peace that come daily from being a part of this long history, tradition, and beauty. Congratulations! By the way, did you marry the man who requested to friend you?

Great testimony, I love conversation stories! You touched on it a couple of times, but becoming Catholic from Protestantism is a paradigm shift in thinking. The convert is shifting their mentality from, "I have to read the scriptures and figure it out for myself" to "do I believe all the Church instructs and can I be completely obedient". That's quite a shift for many people and I know it was for me. During the two years of my discernment, every objection I had about Catholic teaching began to fall away and I slowly began to trust the Church. After 47 years as an Episcopalian I entered the Church in 2018. Catholicism is beautiful and I thank God every day for his grace, mercy, and the sacraments!

Hi Wendy, the Catholic Church has answers to these objections if you’d like to look into them. It’s probably not possible to have a thorough discussion here in the comments section, but there are lots of websites online that could explain, if you are curious. I’m sure Catholic Answers has covered these objections, as well as Dr. David Anders. I wish I had more time to make more videos about these specific kinds of objections… maybe I will someday.

I really like how you said you learned that Protestantism was more of what they were going to stop doing. That is a very profound statement and it’s eye opening. It acknowledges that there was an original church and someone decided to do things differently. Very simple yet profound. I’m a new convert to Catholicism. I was received into the Church this past Easter. May God bless you in your journey and spreading the good news! Also, just wanted to clarify that the 30-40,000 Protestant denominations has been debunked. There have been a couple sources that say it’s around 200 minimum probably higher but we don’t have that data to say exactly. Regardless 200 denominations is still A LOT of division within Christ’s body. I just wanted to share that with you so you can research it yourself if you want to. I used to think that too, because I heard it a lot of places.

Richard Dawkins didn't impressed me either, because he is a deluded guy. God is not a random complex arrangement of pre-existing matter and energy. Thanks for sharing your faith journey and may God bless you for following the truth. You made many great points. St. Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 2:15 to hold fast to the traditions that were passed on, the sacred traditions of the Catholic Church are biblical. Protestants have their traditions, such as bashing Catholics, but they have not been handed on since the Apostles through their valid successors. Everyone has a certain bias when it come to scripture, especially when there is no magestarium. What I find odd is the sola scriptura folks completely miss everything about Mary. The Hail Mary is there in Luke chapter 1 in the annunciation and visitation. In verse 28, the angel Gabriel says, hail [Mary] full of grace, the Lord is with you. Verse 42, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb [Jesus]. If she is full of grace she is holy...holy Mary, mother of God...and in verse 43, Elizabeth calls Mary the mother of my Lord. Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death...anyone can pray for us, but who better than Mary. My point is that Mary and other Catholic beliefs are biblical, but because of the lens they view scripture, the Bible alone folks miss it. I am not trying to bash Protestants, just open their eyes to what is there. Sorry for going off on a tangent. Thanks again for sharing your story. I hope what you are doing becomes tremendously successful for the Lord and you too. I will be praying for you and your family.

In this way, according to blessed Peter (2 Pet. 1 :4), we ‘share in the divine nature’ ” (ct. Catechetical Lectures, XXII, 3). God bless.🙏🥰✝️

Your testimony was all beautiful! I was raised Catholic and never cared about it or God when i was young. I ended up questioning everything and getting BS answers from the priest and my family. That led me to become an atheist for over 12 years. I was fervently against God and anyone who believed in a god. I went out of my way to persecute people for their beliefs... Now today i celebrate just over a year of fully coming back to the Catholic Church. I'm not an emotional person, but my first confession after 12 years, i felt the weight of the world come off my shoulders, and with the, my eyes filled with tears and i left the confessional before the priest could see. But God has been showing me the way back home for a few years, I've just been too stubborn.

Protestant worship is similar to ancient synagogue worship which focused on the singing of psalms (songs) and the reading and teaching of the Torah (scripture). Catholicism and Orthodoxy are similar to the temple worship in Jerusalem where also the psalms were sung and the Torah read, but flesh and blood SACRIFICE were also offered. In the new Christian temples it is the bread and wine, which in the process of offering become the flesh and blood of Jesus, that are SACRIFICED. And sacrificed also for our consumption.

I want to congratulate you first of all for becoming Catholic, then for the beautiful testimony of your journey to the fullness of the Truth! I am a cradle Catholic and love the Church and it’s Teachings. I totally understand your account of your RCIA experience; I have served as a Sponsor and am aware of our shortcomings! But please have this in mind, when a Protestant converts to the Catholic Church, it’s because they know Scripture and are convinced something is lacking in their churches! One more thing, I really believe Converts are better Catholics! Welcome and thank you for your beautiful story!

I’m a cradle Catholic, and recently and almost unconsciously, I noticed that I’m kind of in a quest of deepening my knowledge about faith. Interesting, I seem to always gravitate towards hearing from people who converted to Catholicism more that someone who has been Catholic all her/his life. Testimonies like yours have more value to me in a way that I can’t fully comprehend. Thank you for sharing it and I’ll look forward learning more about our faith and our God with you in this crazy journey that we call life.

Just finished listening for the 2nd time. Awesome Megan. 👍 I checked out your website and totally agreed with your demolition of Sola Scriptura. Perhaps at some stage you might also write about the heresy of 'faith alone'. Jesus clearly commanded Christians to bear fruit (and that a good tree cannot bear bad fruit) - a teaching that is mostly ignored/not taken seriously in the Protestant Church. Regrettably, and sadly ironically, AGREEING with a lot of what you say isn't the same as BELIEVING it. As I was saying on the video by Kimberly, it really is a pity that I never had a chance to look deeper into the Catholic faith before I deconverted in 2020. Btw, this might sound strange coming from an atheist, but this channel really deserves a lot more subscribers!

The Eucharist is celebrated every single day... not every week
@FiledUnderFaith
@FiledUnderFaith 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! My focus was more specifically about what it means to gather on the Lord's day, but I think towards the end of the video I may have vaguely referred to the Eucharist being a miracle every day that the mass is offered, which is of course every day. I have at times thought about how cool it is that at any given moment, somewhere around the world, the mass is likely being celebrated! We are so blessed.

Thanks so much for sharing: I am a reformed Baptist pastor and I appreciate your sincerity, humility and simplicity. May God bless you. Please do not take this comment as against you, but rather the whole situation. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ in the Protestant tradition, this testimony should show us the need of: 1. Faithful Christian families that disciple their children from a young age in doctrine, diligently, deeply and constantly. 2. The need of a solid local church that: preaches the word collectively and privately, prays corporately, actively evangelists, mutually disciples, fervent fellowship and practices the Lord's table every week. 3. Has a good understanding of Sola Scriptura. As the doctrine that teaches that the the Bible is the only post-canon means of accessing the prophets and apostles teachings. All apostolic traditions are contained in scripture and ceased with their death. The NT only is the apostolic succession. We have the apostles tradition and teachings in the NT only. The church even in times of the apostles was already confused and messy. You would have never wanted to receive authoritative teachings from the Corinthians, or Thessalonians or Ephesians etc. Those churches no longer exist for a reason. The body of Christ is eternally manifested in the invisible church and temporarily manifested in local churches. The local church is the one that has authority, as the word of God is meant to work congregationally in all members of the body. Not only the clergy. Please also note, that the flesh always wants someone to tell you and dominate you, to take your individual responsibility. Being responsible for your faith is a big thing, but that is the biblical way. High church tends to take that responsibility off the shoulders of people and people like that, as it makes their life easier. I hope this helps. I'm sorry to my catholic friends if this offends you. Not my intention. In Christ! PS. Born and raised catholic in the most catholic culture besides Italy: Andean South America.

Hello, I take issue with the suggestion that my family or my evangelical church was lacking in their ability to pass on the Christian faith as they understood it. Both my family and the churches I attended were ardently Christian and practiced the best that protestantism offers. The depth of my Christian upbringing is in part what gave me the desire to go deeper. I was given the best of evangelicalism, but it wasn't enough. I needed the Sacraments.

You might already be aware that Ignatius of Antioch and Polycarp were both disciples of the Apostle John and that Ignatius documented the first known use of the name 'the Catholic Church'. Justin Martyr also wrote a great description of the Mass circa 155 AD including the current Catholic practice of taking the Eucharist to those who were unable to attend. One more, if you had never heard, Malachi 1:11 is a great prophecy for the offering made in the Mass complete with incense. God bless

I can't resist jumping in here. I read "Mere Christianity" in my short-lived attempt to get evangelically "saved" a few decades ago . Yes, C.S. Lewis declared two possibilities about Jesus: he was either a liar and a madman or He really was the Son of God. But since Lewis was already a believing fundamentalist Christian when he wrote this, he didn't consider the third possibility: Jesus didn't say the things the gospel writers said that he said many years after his death. In all likelihood the person Jesus actually existed. But only later was he conflated to be the son of God for theological purposes he himself likely didn't espouse. I find this to be the most plausible explanation of who Jesus was. But C.S. Lewis didn't consider it because he'd already made the emotional choice to believe in Christianity. There you have it. That said, I'm so glad you left the Bible thumpers behind and entered the Catholic Church (sorry, I didn't catch your name). It didn't work for me, but I think the Catholic Church is a wonderful organization and, atheist that I am, I will defend it.
@FiledUnderFaith
@FiledUnderFaith Жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks for chiming in! Yes, that's certainly a possibility as well-that Jesus existed, but never claimed to be the son of God. I had some friends who believed this when I was a teenager. Based on my own research, I think there is good evidence that Jesus was a historical figure, who truly said and did the things attributed to him in the four gospels recognized by the Catholic/Evangelical/Orthodox churches. To me, that's the best explanation of why a rag-tag group of Jewish fisherman, doctors, and tax collectors were (1) willing to be tortured/martyred rather than deny that they encountered Jesus Christ after his death (they were first-hand witnesses, after all, unlike Muhammad's followers, Joseph Smith's followers, etc.), (2) why the account in the Gospels have such incredible historicity (if you're going to make it all up, why list women as the first witnesses of the resurrection, when they were not considered reliable witnesses? etc. etc.) and (3) that they would go on to found a worldwide religion that also happens to be the longest-running institution (the Roman Catholic Church).. not to mention, that they got along for the most part. I'm sure you're familiar with those arguments, though, many of which are in Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ. I've been thinking about this a lot recently, and when it comes down to it, I think there's good evidence to believe in God and in Jesus Christ, but not so much that it's undeniable. At the end of the day, it's a hard question, and it's up to each of us to make the call. And I appreciate that you can see good in the Catholic Church, even though it is far from perfect... that's very charitable of you! I am grateful for all of the Church's contributions to science, art, philosophy, philanthropy, and more, but also acknowledge there have been some very grave evils in her 2,000 year history. We Catholics still have more work to do in our Church, and there's still more work to be done in my heart too. Thanks for sharing your perspective, friend. Blessings to you. -Megan

@@FiledUnderFaith Thanks for your response, Megan. I sense there's a lot of love and caring in your words. My wife and I took the RCCA class and joined the church. We had two great young priests at the local church. Going to Confession was a great experience, and I can say that if one is going to adopt Christianity, the Catholic Church is the way to go. I used to watch the vids of Father - now Bishop - Barron here on KZfaq. He's so calm and reasonable, in contrast to all the loudmouth hysterical "christian" apologists I've seen. I've seen all of the points you've raised about Christ argued and refuted many times, so I won't go into them here. You seem like a kind soul and someone I don't want to argue with, LOL. So, I'll just say, thanks for your kind words. May you be happy and peaceful in this life (and I gave you a thumbs up).

Thank you for your thoughtful and moving testimony. I'm sorry that RCIA was a negative experience for you. I became a Catholic before RCIA existed, and much later not once, but twice, in two different parishes, I tied to become part of that ministry, but found it very, very frustrating. It was unfortunately highly structured and aimed towards people who had no strong background in scripture or church history. I could see that some of the catechumens we're also frustrated, but when I tried to address their needs I was told I was being "disruptive." Sigh. The moral of this tale is that yes indeed, Christ did establish His church and gave us the blessings of the sacraments to nourish our faith and grow in grace, but the church, like the world, is populated and sometimes governed by imperfect human beings. That's one reason that the prospect of the second coming is so appealing! 😁

Good story- you should do a video on funny things that happened during your first year or first few months as a Catholic.. a lot of converts talk about how they were so “on fire” spiritually and would say things like “isn’t the Mass awesome?!?’ to fellow parishioners- and only get blank stares. LoL .. and other kinda cringe moments brought on by your zeal for being a fresh Catholic.. I felt so bad one time when a new convert approached me one day after mass and kept trying to talk to me about how excited he was about finally being able to participate fully in a Mass and I just kept blowing him off and blowing him off and then saying something like, “ hey man, will you just let me go home? mass is over now.. it’s. Football is on now”. I felt so bad years later once I realized I just kind of shut someone down.. I’ve been a Catholic all my life so I guess I take a lot of that stuff for granted. Funny thing is I left the church for many many years only to return to the Catholic Church after seeking out the real true church, L O L. I was lucky I didn’t have to go through RCA, just a long confession .. I’ve heard a lot of complaints about RCIA as well, but I also heard great stories of our RCIA too, so I guess it’s all in where you go through it at and how well the program is run. The same things happen to me about being a new returning Catholic going back to mass. I kept pointing out things to people about how awesome the mass was … about how something done by the Priest related to this passage in Scripture or saying things like “this is right out of chapter 6!!” People would give me this blank like I was insane. I guess I got paid back after all. :) Great job.. :) Two other awesome books: Crossing The Tiber (Stephen K Ray) and Upon This Rock (Stephen K Ray). There are lots of great books written by converts to Catholicism- these former anti-Catholics end up becoming the best spokesmen for Catholic Apologetics.
