This is one of the best instructional videos for a specific track I have ever watched. Great mix of lines, sight markers and considerations for linking corners. Plus great blend of repetition, voice over, etc. thx much

The 'fast' lap used in this is also my fastest lap so far in my car, a 1:27.59 -- and remember, this is a street car running on the same tires I drive to the 7-11 on.
@davidt8087
@davidt8087 Жыл бұрын
That's not even that fast that's my average lap and maybe slower than average in a slightly tuned z4 m40i (supras twin). I've seen another guy on youtube get a 1:29:00 in a c8 corvette and thinks it's fast. Americans have grown up with fast and furious straight line racing, fast and furious drifting, nascar straight lines (essentially), and drag strips. Track days come once in a while and aren't filled, drag strips are used daily and are constantly full. No wonder Americans have so many accidents they can barely go in a straight line, speed combined with corners equals guaranteed crash for most Americans. I blame fast and furious and nascar and drag strips and highway straifht line racing culture. I remember bringing two drag strip Queens to the track. They had AWFUL times I mean AWFUL even after learning the track. Awful as in on big willow their best laps in a supra or tuned 2022 m4 was 1:48: even 1:54. Then they complained and went right back to the drag strip

@@JackOlsen Yea 1:25, 1:26. Even 1:27 is extremely good.. Your looking at basically supercar speeds at 1:27. The fastest track cars are doing 1:23, 1:24, 1:25 etc. The z4 m40i doesn't have much power, but it's the 500lb ft of torque not to mention extremely nimble and amazing handling/staying planted extremely well that helps. Everytime I think the z4 is definitely maxed out, I am left shocked and surprised when it effortlessly keeps going faster and taking the turns even better the faster it is. I still think I haven't reached its peak limit because I fear I'll break it lol its a $75k car. If only I got paid to race other people's cars. My times would go up

Jack, thank you for this video and for your helpful advice when I met you last month. I was the guy with the blue 2009 911S. As you may recall, my very first lap was 1:55, but I dropped 2-3 seconds per lap, ending at 1:39 by the end of my first session. The second session was a string of 1:36s. I consolidated in the 1:36s and 1:37s during my third and fourth sessions. Then, in my fifth and final session, I really went to work on T8/T9 and brought my times down into the 1:34s. Not bad for just one day! I was very happy with the progression of my day and I couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you, again.

Just found this Jack. That was GREAT!! I have hundreds of laps at Willow in my SCK enduro kart back in the 1970's. My specialty was a box stock class little 100cc two stroke McCullough 91B1, supposed to be a gas only class....so a bunch of us figured out how to run straight 100% methanol (with Klotz racing oil). We turned around 1:50 in the slower class I ran, but laying flat on your back 2 inches off the ground made it seem like F1! Ha... We were faster than some of the little production cars. I concur on all your instruction points. My wife laughed when I said ahead of time; "Watch out for the marbles on the outside of turn two!!!"... And then a moment later you said that same thing! Cracked me up. Thanks for a great vid and taking me back to the old days!! Martin

Thanks Jack! This is a brilliant turn by turn guide to one of the fastest tracks in the west. Your turn in, apex, and landmarks are exactly as I was taught by an old salt instructor on my first day here many years ago. These lines have served me well. I will share this vid with future students who are coming to WSIR for their first time.

Thank You. Thank You. I watched this video numerous times before going to Willow Springs for the first time. I went yesterday and within two laps I had your line down. I did everything you suggested and it was smooth like butter. Next time I will get higher speeds with some new Cup or 888 tires for my 2103 C6 Grand Sport. My street Pilot sport 4s do well but I need more grip for that track. Thanks again and keep the videos coming.

Jack, thank you for this wonderful instruction. I watched it repeatedly over 2 hrs yesterday and put to use today. Got 1:28 with a 2020 Pista. Jack’s instruction might have just saved my life today. Had a gt3 flied off turn 9 because it took the inside line at way too much speed. Almost make the same mistake and the building and tower visual cue is easy to spot and simple to understand. The B at turn 3 is easy to see unless you don’t know that Budweiser starts with B. For any new drivers, please please please do not follow a faster car’s line just the first few time you track. All cars are not created equal. The faster car might have much grippier tires or a much stiffer suspension, just because it can carry 100 at turn 9 does not mean your car can do it too. One thing I want to correct on Jack’s video, modern cars accelerate much faster and also have higher top speed. Just because jack says full throttle, doesn’t mean you pedal to the metal in a Ferrari pista. Just beware of your speed. If you go full throttle after turn 1, most 600 plus hp cars might need a bit break entering turn 2.

Just saw this Video: I like it. That was my favorite Track when I was Stock Car racing in a Spec Class 22 years ago. Alllson Legacy Cars. 3/4 scale with stock Mazda B2200 Engine and Trans. Etc. The downhill S turns from the Balcony can be pushed harder because the Left turn has a huge run off. Use it. After a couple years of running there with my Dad as a Driver, It was my turn. I made some extreme Gearing changes to beat the old Track Record for our class by over 3.5 seconds. That is when Willow moved us away from racing with the Spec Racers and added us to the Porsche Club. (Kind of weird to me that you are showing the video with a Porsche.) Our cars had a good weight to H.P. Ratio. We would stand on it on exit of turn 5 and never lift until the entry of Turn 1. (Only a couple were capable of doing it.) I was 3rd in line trough turn 8 when the top 2 squirted by, I decided to lift for a second and get a better inside Exit of a 911... He had a whole 1/4 mile to cross the track to set up for turn 1.... Nope, he came across my nose. I had 2 options... Drill him, or hook it Left... I chose not to destroy a couple cars. I spun it so hard, I passed him in the dirt and showed that driver that he was #1 out my Window Net 4 different times. (With each spin.) I ended up on Pit Road and drove through and passed him 1 lap later. Still won the overall race and he was shown the gate by the Officials... We were clocked about the same speeds through Turn 8. 135 - 140...

After searching for videos on Willow Springs Raceway and finding mostly crash videos, I was nervous about hitting the track for the first time. People really seem to mess up this course. But after watching this video repeatedly, the track felt like an old friend even though I'd never been there before. All the turn-in points felt right, all the apexes arrived as you had indicated. The perspective of the camera in the car combined with graphics and a great mix of slow-mo and real-time action make this an invaluable tool. I hope KZfaq is sending you some ad revenue checks.

Years ago, I was fortunate to attend the Porsche Club's annual party at Willow Springs. Had a great time at the bar-bq and then watched them race from dusk to dawn. They were all Porsches, with one Ferrari. One by one, the Porsches would pass the Ferrari in the turns, but the Ferrari blew their doors off on the straightaway. The flames shooting out of the cars at night was incredible!

Memories. Summer '72. 1st time on track(64.5 Mustang coupe). Fast forward a few years. Starting to get into road racing my Yamaha RD350. Trying a buddie's 250 and lost it through turn 9. Started to lay it down but hit something that stood bike up and highsided. Flew a hundred feet(or so they tell me). Broke my wrist, collarbone, two ribs cracked, badly pulled groin muscle, and a ton of skin gone. Like I said, memories. Still love going there. Just not on a motorcycle.
