this is a big problem with youtube... yes there is alot of good that comes from it, the list is infinite of the good it brings but it can be hella discouraging as well if you don't take things the right way... all we ever see is the end product... we don't see the weeks and hours of hard work that were required to get even close to being able to play it perfect. So I think its good when people show their learning process a bit :)

This is one of the best guitar vids I've ever seen. It shows how hard it is to actually nail stuff, the time spent just figuring it out a few notes at a time. Not just 1 take and done. But hours of sitting down and figuring it out and making mistakes that in the end build into getting it. Or thinking you have it, getting ever closer until the first time you nail it 👍

Man, I remember learning stuff that was nowhere near this hard and i even had tabs to help me and i still couldn't pick it up like this. It would take me three or four days to get 12 notes up to speed before I moved on. This was when I was in high school and I would come home, eat something, then lock myself in my room until I fell asleep at 1am with my guitar in my lap. If I was really close to the end of a song, I'd skip school to finish it. Now I'm in my 50s and I can't play as fast, but I was never this good.

I know what you mean. I played most my life applied myself seriously. But modern guitar like Polyphia is out of my league. I’ll bet most old shredders from 80s can’t play polyphia either. Steve vai was first I heard say he couldn’t do what the guitarist in polyphia do. I never hear Paul Gilbert or Marty Friedman mention polyphia. For decades yngwie, and etc were elite (rock) guitarist. Not anymore. They must cringe when someone ask them to play polyphia. Terrified.

I find tabs make it more difficult to learn a song, at least in most cases. And for me at least, songs I learned from tabs I seem to forget in a week, whereas those i earn I remember for years. More importantly Ed Tabs stress notes, not shapes and chords, like using you ear does: plus, listing to the song over and over you get the timing drilled into your head as well as the notes. Realistically we don’t all have the ear to sound these things out so the tab are a useful reference but I urge those who haven’t tried vintage style and instead rely only on tab, put it down and go learn a new Hendrix song focusing on the chords and embellishments (you can lookup the chord progression if necessarily) yeou might find it works better

Tyler. Thank you for letting us see you struggle. Your never give up attitude is probably what I've had to do for the entirety of my guitar life. I thought it was being taken away from me physically by compression in the Ulner Nerve from my elbow down. The worst part being, the surgeon having to repair/replace the nerves that control my Ring and Pinky fingers on my fretting hand. I'm not fixed yet. It's a long healing process. But you're showing me the light at the end of the tunnel. Idk how to thank you, but I will think of a way. Until then, ✌️❤️🤘🎸💯. I'm just so happy right now!!

I'm really glad that he switched guitars for the majority of the video and came up with a tone that's similar to what Polyphia used on the song. Just like the note at the end I also really love that tone and I've personally discovered that it's a lot easier for me to learn how to play other people's riffs or licks if I come up with a tone that's at least SIMILAR to theirs as it kind of helps me to get into a mind space where the playing makes more sense.

What I like most about these kinds of videos is that, even someone as incredible at guitar as you, still has to "learn" to play songs. As dumb as that may sound, it's all too easy to find guitarists on instagram of a perfect run, not the 10 attempts they made whilst recording. It really helps me and my self-confidence to see we all struggle with learning new songs some times; so when I mess up playing a new song, I'm not as hard on myself and find it easier to keep going. Great video dude, loving the Guitar Super System too! \m/

This song is really hard, so I really do feel for Tyler here lol. Those moments of "guitar player excuses" really got me feeling like we ALL do the same thing. I remember I was all sour grapes with the idea of playing fast lead parts until I actually learned how to play lead. I love how humanizing this is; since I've been learning a lot of Polyphia, it's been taking me multiple days to get riffs and passages down. In a strange way, it's good to see someone who I respect so much and hold in high regard struggle a bit with the same stuff I struggle with. Even though Tyler is miles and miles ahead of me, suddenly it feels like we're driving on the same track.

That guitar sounds sick. I have a new love/addiction for lipstick and firebird pickups. i have recently 'made' a normal 3 lipstick strat with a 10way freeway switch a 5pickup strat - 2firebird (neck and bridge) 3 lipsticks (inbetween), with 1 being in the normal middle spot but the other 2 right beside the f.b pickups so i can form p-rail style humbuckers using slide switches And a 2 firebird 1 lipstick 12 string tele..... And in a few months when its back in stock the guitar that kicked off this new habit - i can finally buy a lefty danelectro 12 string with 2 lipsticks I have a problem 😂

Really great video. Do you think learning by ear like this is some innate ability or can it be learned? Also, here's a video idea. I know someone who is just starting their guitar journey and they asked me a question that I struggled to answer. He wanted to know, when he goes into a guitar shop to find a new guitar, what should he look for? When he gets one off the wall and tries it, what is it he should be testing out? I know what I like in a guitar but I have been playing for 30 years. I didn't know how to articulate how I know a guitar is right for me. He has only been playing for six months. I told him the basics. Sit down with it. Play it. Feel how the neck feels in your hand. Put a strap on it and stand up. See if the balance is good. Check it for scratches and dings. Plug it in and try a few tone settings. Maybe that's enough for a video on its own. But he countered all that with, "Yeah, but how do _know_ that it is the right guitar for you?" All I could say is I just know it when I play it. How do explain that to someone? And I can't find any videos that talk about this. How do you help a new player figure out what they like in a guitar? Or is that just something they have to figure out on their own through trying hundreds of guitars?
