I can confirm that bar-end shifters make for very intuitive gear changes. The feel of lever angle in relation to the bar makes it easy to get very accurate shifts without too much conscious effort.

The friction shifting explanation on this blew my mind. I couldn't believe it -- but I had an easy way to test it immediately. 8-9 years ago, I decided that I had to have a 26" "retro"-built, steel all-terrain bike and I had to have thumb shifters on it. Remembering how fiddly the 3x5 friction-only setup was on my childhood Peugeot U.S. Express ATB, I ended up buying a pair of Dura-Ace 3x9 bar-end shifters, plus pods to turn them into thumbies. The set probably cost me around $110-120 to set up (Microshift's dedicated thumbies either didn't exist then or I missed them). Pretty expensive, but it works great. So after watching THIS video, I got on the bike, flipped the right lever to friction-only mode, and just went for a quick ride. UNBELIEVABLE!!! I'd say it worked perfectly about 9 out of 10 shifts. When it wasn't perfect, a tap on the lever was all it took to sort it out! I had to laugh. I could have spent $10 or less on the cheapest Chinese pair of friction-only shifters, and I would have pretty much the same functionality as my Gucci setup! Oh well

Suggestion: Use transparent adhesive tape to protect your paint. Your frame and paint are beautiful. It would be a shame to mar it with wear and tear from the bags. Just sayin'.... That bike is a work of art. Thanks for the video.

Yeah, and use tape that hasn't got strong adhesive, or you will pull the clear coat off when you remove it. That's what I did. Electrical tape is probably the best.

Greetings from Germany! I'm riding a Patria Trondheim steel bike hand made in Leopoldshöhe (near Bielefeld) using standard CrMo tubing (by Poppe + Potthoff, also based in North Rhine-Westphalia). I've the same front light (BUMM IQ-X) but a vintage SRAM DualDrive 2 gearing. A nice mix of one-by and internal hub (24 speeds) which was made in Schweinfurt, Germany around 16 years ago and offers a range comparable to Rohloff. Sadly SRAM discontinued the product and all production in Germany, yet stillt their R&D department is based here. For brakes I've the Magura HS11/HS33 hydraulic rim brakes which are still very popular (also made in Germany) but sadly there is no brake handle option for drop bars/"race bikes". My bags are from German brand Ortlieb and Vaude. My rack is from Racktime/Tubus, the fenders are "bluemels" as well as the bottle cages - both from SKS, Made in Germany. I rode the bike this year for almost 10.000km outside.

What a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I had a Fuji Touring with the bar end shifters, and once I got used to them, I loved them. That bike got stolen though, and I replaced it with a bike eith index shifters. Don't like them as much. I find myself shifting in the wrong direction sometimes. Never did that with my Fuji.

Just about a perfect modern/retro road bike. I personally would've gone with 110/74 cranks just because I can't stand hunting for chainrings when co-ops are full of that standard, but...this bike is about balls to the wall componentry so I respect the choice ;) Honestly, funny how similar our taste in bikes are, I've been hemming and hawing over what my custom bike would be...and it includes just about damn near every choice you made for it.

Great bag but the moment you load the bar bag it wont sit right. I know because i own one as well. If you use the d-rings on the side it works a lot better. The same bar mount straps work, but, serious riding and sweating leads to the d rings rusting and “damaged” my enve carbon areo af bars. Actually looks awesome because there is somehow rust stains on my carbon bars, underneath where no one except mechanics notice. I removed the d rings and now use nano volé straps. They fit super snug in the existing d ring loop and are quicker to remove but more importantly mount, especially if tired. The bag is amazing. My first experience with its water-proofness was accidentally popping open a beer in my haste to pack it, in my bedroom. It did not spill a drop. Load cans facing up, Not sideways! There are also secret pockets inside the outside pockets! One that fits dollar bills and basically hide’s your cash in plain sight. I added velcro closures for the “lid” and turned mine around. The straps where you mounted to the bars on mine now instead can be used to strap a tent or chair or thermos too. Instant coffee has never been so good! Or instant! Couple twists and no unpacking or re packing a stove, or cup, or anything!

"It planes perfectly for me." I haven't heard anyone use the word "plane" in this sense on youtube ever. The first and only place I've heard it in common use was the Bridgestone owners bunch email list serve. I think you would be on the right track to do a whole video on the topic of whether or not, or how, a bike planes. To, me it's the quality I'm looking for in my builds, and the most elusive in that it is nebulous to define. Thanks BikeFarmer !

Great video and beautiful bike. Funny how often you people in the comments mention to save it from scratches. I was like that before too, but after all, bicycles are there to be used and once you use something, it will be visible sooner or later. If these scratches annoy you so much, you could try finding piece with the concept „beausage“. Basically something getting prettier by wear signs. It shows what this thing has gone through with you. Nice concept I‘d say. Greetings from Germany :)

@trishaleaver3581 Bars are definitely a personal preference thing. I am trying out a Taiwanese copy of the Origin8 Strongbow bar (most likely manufactured in the same place) with some ESI silicone bar tape which is super thick instead of traditional mtb grips. So far it feels good, but I haven't had the chance to give them a long distance ride. I also have a set of mtb riser bars cut to 740mm and my try them with a set of bar end extensions mounted inboard of the controls, sorta Velo Orange "Crazy bars" like.

Eh, I'd place the 105 5700 deraileurs over those. 50-34-22 triple and a 11-36 cassette. Microshift indexed barends hold their tune and shifting is effortless, just as quick but I can actually pick where to shift without effort. Shifting by ear, just I listen to the lever instead of the grinding chain :-P

I had no idea about Ellis Cycles (but as much as I would love a custom frame I couldn't afford it). Nice nod to Russ and his appreciation for simple functional components. Now I wonder if I could go to a 9 speed cassette with friction shifters on my early 80s Trek with its 6 speed f/w? New wheels would be a lot cheaper for me. Inspiring video.

Hey BikeFarmer! Lovely build here. While watching you shift through the gears, I had a thought about chain line for wide-range doubles/bailout gears. Is it best practice to use a bottom bracket that centers the chainline between the two chainrings, or would it make more sense to center the outer chainring for the chainline, since you’ll usually be using the larger chainring? Personal preference maybe??

I like how you routed the bar end shifting cable housing all the way to the top of the handlebars for a cleaner look instead of the traditional way of looping around from the drops. I heard the former method can compromise the shifting because it bends the cable too much. Is there a know-how to accomplish this, or do you simply find it to be false?

From my experience, this drivetrain needs a longer cage RD. this hanger extension is not the best solution. Just get that long pull friction shifter and a silver grx RD perhaps. Edit: you might even have the 11s chain jump off of the RD pulley wheels, jam in there and have it wreck the RD + the hanger and possibly even the frame! take care

@@bkefrmr I'm curious about open circuit (light disconnected) voltage at various road speeds. I'm also curious about current draw from the light in Amps (or milliAmps). The bottle dynamos of old were LOUD and draggy, but they were dependable and inexpensive, I'd love a fully modernized version.
