£1400 might be a lot for a lot of people but I definitely expected more for a custom made dress. Also being yellow and not overly bridal means you can wear it for future formal events in future. Personally to me makes more sense to a very bridal dress that you can never wear again.

A lot of vintage dresses have strap keepers - although they’re typically at the apex of the shoulder, and fasten with very small snaps to one side instead of the middle. Too bad the ones on your dress were uncomfortable - I usually never even feel them! Years back I was searching for sleeveless 1950s vintage dresses on Etsy and I came across what was obviously a wedding dress - it was an ivory tulle tea-length confection in very good condition and the measurements fit mine. AND IT WAS $48! So of course I bought the dress. Was I even dating anyone? No. Am I now? No. But I’m keeping that dress by gum because you never know and I for sure would never find a smoking deal like THAT again!!! So yes, I’m the weird spinster with an unworn wedding dress in her closet, and you know what? No regrets.

One of my best friends married in august and she decided for a custom dress, too. Hers was a lot more "bridal", but really really beautiful and it fit her perfectly, obviously. She had an open back so the designer/seamstress didn't only put hooks and eyes on the shoulders for the straps but also at the waist to secure the wrap-around bra. The nicest extra, though, was that she gave the surplus fabric to my friend who then handmade the dress for her toddler from those fabric pieces for her christening in the same ceremony. So adorable! In the end it wasn't more expensive than a "normal" wedding dress and the price also included removing and dying the skirt so it can more easily reworn. Now I'm thinking about getting a dress custom made as well - if I ever marry ;)

My parents wedding and honeymoon combined cost less or about as much as my aunts wedding dress alone. Wedding dresses are crazy. My mother made hers herself which was good because she got pregnant so she was able to adjust the design to allow for her to change size and she was able to get her perfect dress (or near perfect because she had to change the design anyway) for way cheaper. My parents had a medieval themed wedding so their outfits were medieval/medieval inspired and they also made clothes for a lot of the guests. I don't remember who made it (both my parents sew) but my father's clothes were also handmade. My mother and her bridal party were in purple (purple and gold for her) and my father and his whatever the male version of a bridal party is was in blue (blue and silver/grey for him) because they were their favourite colours. It was so untraditional I think my grandma refused to go.

I don't know if this helps but I went for a somewhat non traditional dress (it was more traditional than Hannah's but I did just but it in the fancy dress area of Nordstroms rather than enter near any bridal shop) and everyone liked it because it suited my personality (at least that's what they said to my face). As someone who sews and can build dresses I imagine the fabric cost alone to be around £300-500 depending on fabric type/cost/thickness/quality. Then you need to add on all the hours building the dress itself, designing, pattern drafting and sewing. Will be fun to see how much it costs at the end if Hannah lets us know.

Congratulations, Hannah!! The dress is gorgeous and so unique + fun, I love it! I'm really glad you were able to have a wedding celebration what with covid. One note about the bra poppers - I absolutely agree, having the poppers would make clothes sooo much more convenient. A lot of South Asian formal wear actually has this built in and I always thought they were really useful, though they're placed closer to the shoulder.

The tradition of white wedding dresses is a relatively recent thing. Most Victorian brides didn't wear white. I didn't get married in white because I didn't want to spend a lot on a dress I'd only wear once, I definitely wasn't virginal and a lot of wedding dresses look like a baked Alaska! I bought an off the peg dress in the sale at Liberty's which cost me £90 (which is the most I've ever spent on a garment). I got a lot of wear out of it too! It was a cornflower blue printed cotton dress and I loved it. It eventually wore out. My bridesmaids were dressed in very pretty sun dresses I bought in BHS and they got a lot of wear out of those too. My parents were divorced pensioners and neither had any money so we paid for everything after saving up, although my mum made and paid for the cake. It was a lovely wedding, everyone had a great time and the whole cost, including the honeymoon, was under £5000.

I want a blue or maybe periwinkle colour, but I can sew, my aunt helped me sew my own high school grad dress (materials cost $50, my classmates spend around $250 or more), and I'm hoping to get her to help. But I might consult a local designer, or even a friend who works doing costumes for local theatre. I love sewing, and I can make casual clothes, but I struggle with sizing and designs. Personally, I went with a shop on Etsy, as I wanted to be able to see the design first, but also wanted to be able to choose the colours/pattern and have it made to my measurements from start. It's also awesome for anyone on a smaller budget (150-1k €/£/$) as the individual shops usually base the cost on the fabric and actual work, without enormous markups just because it's a wedding dress.
