Both James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine are playing all those guitar riffs while singing. They're both absolute master rhythm guitar players.

Dave Mustaine wrote most of the songs that got them signed and even had some writing credits on Metallica's 2nd album Ride The Lightning. Metallica originally performed Mechanix. I used to have a Metallica bootleg of them performing Mechanix.

This was the good ol' days. I saw Metallica in early '83 in SF...the Dave and Cliff days, before Kill 'Em All was recorded after Dave was ejected. Fun that you're comparing the two versions, but Metallica's early Demo recording of this was titled; The Mechanix. The lyrics were changed when they recorded it as "The Four Horsemen."

Thanks for doing this. I wasnt even aware Megadeth remastered that song. I heard the demo tape way way back in the day and thought that was it. Always been a Four Horseman guy - death, deliverance for you for sure! Now theres nothin you can do.

The production quality is completely different for the songs, too. Megadeth spent almost all of their studio money on drugs, so they had to get what they got, lol.

Metallica was driving from San Fran to NYC to record their first album, when half way there they decided enough was enough, and put Dave on a bus back home. They stole Kirk Hammett from the band Exodus who then learned all of Dave's solos, and recorded Kill Em All. They were all just kids.

Now you're talking! This is when it gets good man. Kill Em All is possibly my favourite Metallica album. The energy is just too good. They're 20 years old, and no one had heard anything quite like it at the time. An amazing debut album.

Run them both back but play Horsemen at 1.25x speed and it sounds like Mechanix......play Mechanix at 0.75x speed and it sound like Horsemen. Science

Dave has said there are songs he never got credit for on their first three albums. I believe him, because you can hear his stank all over those songs. I am glad they split, personally. Much more iconic music was released due to their split on both sides.

I love both bands, but I'm a Four Horseman guy all the way! It's essentially a Megadeth song, but Four Horseman has much better storytelling, better groove and rhythm, the added bridge (1st solo) by Kirk to put his stamp on it is one of my favorite parts; it's got so much soul. And Cliff Burton's work on it just completes the choice between the two for me. He's amazing!

In my opinion, the lyrics are better in the Metallica version, but instrumentals are better in the Megadeth version

Megadeths was like double speed. Way harder. I can play the metallica version easy. But the megadeth one is super fast

I wanted to make this comment before I watch the video but I personally think out of the 2 I prefer Metallica, both them and Megadeth are 2 of my favorite bands of all time, but I still kinda think of Megadeth of as a second Metallica that does everything they do but ever so slightly worse, but of of the few things I think Megadeth did better was this song, I just think The Four Horsemen goes on for ever so slightly too long, and I think I prefer the tempo on The Mechanix. That’s just me though and I can understand someone saying The Four Horsemen is better.

Metallica for sure! Not even close for me. And yes, brother, I get you made the Dave voice comments for me. This song completely illustrates my dislike of his voice. He is fine as a metal screecher, yeller, or screamer. But, when he tries to sing…with any kind of smoothness….ouch. I do, however, agree with your “win win” comment. Because I do like Megadeth. So, we did all win having both bands all these years. Appreciate the post! Fun stuff…..walked away from a wet paint brush to listen to this….now a crusty brush awaits! 🤪

Mechanix is NOT the "Megadeth- version" of "Four Horsemen" from Metallica! Dave Mustaine wrote Mechanix in his early times as a member of Metallica! Mechanix is the original played by Megadeth later with Dave!

If you're comparing these two recordings, there's no contest, "Four Horsemen" is just the superior recording. If you're a single-minded metalhead who only cares about picking speed, okay fine, Megadeth's track is better, but if you're a normal human being, everything about Metallica's recording is just so much better. It actually sounds like a professional recording. That's a relative term with these two albums, Kill 'em All is still a rough record, but actually sounds produced by a competent producer at least, whereas Megadeth blew half their recording budget on HARD drugs, and it shows. Also, I like the slow guitar solo that Kirk Hammett added to the track on Kill 'em All (for some reason they never played that solo live, maybe they felt it slowed down the pace too much). Also, just my humble opinion: Dave was always, ALWAYS a royal jerk, then, now, and always. He's just an insufferable human being, and you have to be a SPECIAL kind of drunken asshole for you to get fired from Metallica IN 1983, and have THAT be the reason. That said, they gave him a bus ticket across the country with no money or food for 4 days (granted, they were next to penniless themselves at the time, but that was a ROYAL dick thing to do to him). I'd have a grudge about that too. But consider this: Dave Mustaine has been the only constant member of Megadeth, other than him it's always just been a rotating door of hired guns. Because nobody can stand working with him, he's just difficult to everybody. His longest bandmate and best friend was David Ellefson and even he got sick of his shit after a while. Don't be a Dave.

Megadeth are faster, but this is not car race and so...Its so easy, Metallica as usual Kill em all, sounds better, lyrics are better, solos better...James is better. P.S. big difference in this two songs is Cliff, this bass sounds awesome 😎

I love James Hetfields lyrics alot more. Metallicas take on the song, the added solos and Kirk Hammetts melodic metal style. Where Megadeth fast and too technical style harder to enjoy. I Iike Mechanics but I love The Four Horsemen. Mechanics was about sex. Hetfield didn't like the idea about Metallica writing music about sex.

The musicianship by Megadeth will always top Metallica. The drumming alone has never come close let alone the guitar!

*YES! The Four Horsemen is such a great song and Kill Em' All is such a great album. People will talk about Dave Mustaine and his time with Metallica as if he deserves all kinds of credit for it when he really doesn't. Dave Co-wrote 4 songs off Kill Em' All and 2 songs off Ride The Lightning. He was only with Metallica for 11 months over 40 years ago and isn't on any of their albums. He was fired before their debut album of Kill Em' All. There's hundreds of thousands of former band members out there who were with bands for years who wrote and co-wrote songs. It's not that big of a deal. Dave deserves mad respect and credit as a guitarist and for what he created with Megadeth.. not his short lived, once upon a time with Metallica. Mechanix is more of a fuck-off to Metallica than actually a good version of the song. Dave just wanted to show that he could do it faster. But then again the Megadeth is likely the original version, so what are you gonna say... I prefer the Metallica version because it is more progressive and thought through.

Even though Dave wrote the song, Mechanicx is just a desperate attempt by Dave to try and prove he's "faster". Faster does not mean better, at least in this attempt.

It is a most silly talking point which delusional Mustaine devotees wannabe boyfriends of Dave like to cling onto - to this day!
