In just a couple of weeks, it will be time for me to start my first batch of seeds indoors. We spent some time today to get all the supplies out and setup. Before we start putting seeds in the ground, I want to share with you guys some tips and advice to help get you started on this journey as well. It does not need to cost a lot of money to get started, but you do have invest a bit of your time learning some new skills. I've only been growing my own starts for the last 3-4 years now, and I've already learned a ton myself. Today, I will do my best to share all those learning with you, along with my planting schedule for the 2024 season ♥

I may plant 12 in an effort to get 6, but then I end up planting all 12 into the garden anyway...because, more food, ya know?? LOL. It just kills my husband too, because he always wonders where in the heck I am gonna put all these plants. I find spaces...it's the best!! Happy Gardening, Y'all!

I'd Like to take a moment and Thank you for sharing this knowledge for free. So many content creators that i started watching a few years back are now starting to go to the pay for knowledge academies/classes and deleting their vids on youtube! Hey to Rachel and anyone following her Pepper planting time.... I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend to start them AT LEAST a month before you start your tomatoes. I speak from years and years of growing my own plant starts in MN, peppers NEED more time growing than tomatoes do. I 100% agree do not start tomatoes so early but peppers take way long to germinate and can be very picky to germinate. They also need more grow time so you get peppers sooner. I have played with this and I always have peppers way sooner than any of my neighbors because I start mine sooner and they are further along in their growth, so they produce sooner. And by the time you find out your favorite peppers didn't germinate when you plant them at the same time as tomatoes, you are so far behind and by relying on your own pepper starts you have lost time you can't regain in that growing season. I say that because it has happened to me. Now I gladly plant more peppers than I need to assure I get what I want and give the rest away to family and they are amazed at the harvests they get....all because they are more mature. And peppers are not like tomatoes in that they do not get crazy leggy and they are much easier to handle in that respect. So Rachel, do yourself a favor and at the very least start some of your peppers a month before your tomatoes. And time is on your side to experiment starting some a month before your tomatoes and some with your tomatoes. I am sure you will see peppers a month sooner than the ones you start with your tomatoes. I love your channel....so this comes from a place of wanting to pass along what I have learned and I live in a much colder climate than you so I am certain this will benefit you and I would think anyone no matter your zone.

I would also recommend starting your peppers in February-march peppers take way longer to grow and bare fruit. In my experience the first flush of peppers is very minimal so I always harvest the first growth of peppers once they are big before they start to ripen so my next harvest will come sooner and with more peppers. Tomatos are ruthless and I definitely start mine to early every year but peppers I always wish I started them sooner. I'm in Virginia and our lady frost is normally end of April. Last year I started my peppers Feb 5, and planted them out in May I think I'm starting my peppers today to give them 6 days longer. I wanted to start them this past weekend but had important things to do. Definitely start your peppers as soon as you can if you want a nice pepper year!

Plants are supposed to be started indoors 6-8 weeks from your last frost date. Tomatoes and peppers are warm weather plants so they are summer plants. They should be put out in late May.

I start peppers 2 weeks before tomatoes. I also plant them in the garden 1-2 weeks after tomatoes. Peppers need warmer night temps.

@@michellerose6721 for fun I am going to start a few super early and put in pots to set out when warm enough during the day and bring in at night and see how early I can get peppers. Ironically I did not know peppers needed warmer temps than tomatoes so I always planted them at the same time as tomatoes, always worked for me, but then again I refuse to put tomatoes out until 2 weeks past my last frost day because I ain't got time to cover all my tomatoes

I haven't watched the video yet, but will later today. I came here for tips that people might have in the comments first. I am 100% doing this this year. I had always started my peppers and tomatoes at the same time and had lackluster pepper harvests. Last year I had an injury and couldn't start seeds so bought plants. A lot of plants were terrible and I was so disappointed. I ended up having to buy some bigger pepper plants because that's all I could find, and my pepper harvest was AMAZING! I said several times last year I have to start my peppers early. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, lol

I live in zone 6b. We always direct sow, squash, cucumbers, dill, carrots, onion bulbs. And they do great most years. Cucmber starts when transplanted, go threw a "sick" phase after transplanting them into the ground before they take off. We've noticed that direct sowing cucmber seeds tend to do way better than starts being transplanted, since they go into a shock. Their root system is super sensitive as well as their leaves. They dont like to be handled very much.

Yes I've found the same in zone 5a. I often ended up having to replant so definitely not worth doing starts in my case.

This depends a lot on your growing season length. If I direct sow I’d never have melons or winter squash in time.

I have found that it makes a big difference if you don't leave them in a pot for more then 2-3 weeks. The bigger they are, the more shock or stunting you have in the garden.

This is one of the things I have been looking for! Also in 6b. All my seed packets say direct sow for squash. And I've always just bought plants because I heard seed starting could be tricky. I may try both. I'm encouraged now seeing this!

I love your set up, actually, because most of us don't have spare rooms to make into grow rooms! I have 5' folding tables set up in our family room along the south facing windows and that's my seed starting space. I'm definitely interested in your seed planner and I'll check it out!

This is how mine is set up. Except it’s in our dining room because the window is south facing. This is real life. We use our home to our advantage to help us with the lifestyle we love.

I love March for direct sow outside. Peas and lettuces love it - past two years plus chard, kale and potatoes! I’m mid Michigan. Tomatoes can root all along its stem - Y/T videos on this- so let em grow tall and snip off those bottom leaves near ground and bury in a ditch! Worked well last year for me! (We’d like tomatoes with our cucumbers if possible!) 🩷

Thanks! That was great! I used to hate seed planting. (Though I still prefer getting plants at the nursery.) But I can’t find the tomatoes I want, so I grow some stuff from seeds. I learned so much from last year. Tip: Just write the acronym of what you have on the back of those plastic plant tags you get on the nursery plants. Keep those nursery pots and plant shells! Keep it cheap (a.k.a, FREE).

I started using mycorrhizal inoculant last growing season, after seeing your success with it. I couldn’t believe the difference! The plants were so much stronger and healthier.

This was just the motivation I needed today to get organized for this year’s garden. I live in a single wide mobile home and my large dining room table becomes the seed starting surface with heat mats and grow lights. Here in zone 6b it’s such a late last frost May 15th. You gave so many good tips I need to watch again and take notes.

It's my 2nd year seed starting. I'm in zone 4b and just started my peppers. Last year I started them beginning of March and they produced late in the season. I've talked to others in my area and they start mid to late Jan too. Tomatoes will be in 2-3 weeks 👍

I like to use solo cups also. Since the cups are labled, I will half bury it by the plant when transplanting. Just enough to keep the cup from blowing away but still be able to read the plant name.

SE Michigan here also. Thank you SOOO much for posting this video now! It sent me down a rabbit hole yesterday, lol. I dont even go by frost dates really anymore because i dont plant until Memorial day week anymore- other than cold weather crops- we have had so many "late" frosts around here. I LOVE the idea of the green house over the heat register! I'm 100% doing that for my starts this year and already have the greenhouse ordered for it (a lot of places have them on sale right now). Also went to your video on your first year set up and saw you say you were going to hook the lights up to a timer. How have I never thought of that before?!? I have other lamps on timers in the house...omg! Game changers, especially when I have to work in the office, no more worrying about whether I forgot to turn on the light or not. This was the rabbit hole I needed! Thank you!

I do this in my dining area too. Just the indoor greenhouse. I grow too many plants and run out of room. Last year I successfully did winter sowing with milk jugs. I am going to be doing both this year.

@@janelawrence95 I learned a little bit from last year. I put some out too early and had to try again. So this year I will probably start the end of February beginning of March for most of them. I am going to do peppers inside though. I am in zone 6 (maybe 7 with the new changes).

I’ve done a garden for 2 years, this year will be my 3rd. I started in buckets on the side of my house, then moved to 2 raised beds. Both years I’ve done seed starts but this year I am so determined to do everything from seed. I just want to prove to myself that I’m capable of it. This video is perfect timing. Have you ever tried winter sowing your cooler crops like Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, cabbage? You can do that in milk jugs outside and no harding off needed.

You're going to do great! Start small and build on it year to year, beans and greens is what I suggest to new gardeners.

@@melodycrapser-cy5eh Happy to help! Go for bush beans, they don't require a trellis, and keep the greens in partial shade. They might bolt (go to flower) when it gets really hot but the beans should be ok. Any questions, feel free to ask. 🙂

So happy to see you seed starting and back in the garden. I'm an hour north of you and my last frost date is May 5th. You have a bit of an earlier starting date and a bit longer growing season. My sister used to live in Taylor and she would always have tomatoes way before me. I start lettuce, basil and peppers in February under my grow lights. Peppers because I found that clipping them gives me more produce. If I didn't start them extra early, I wouldn't have time for them to be clipped. Mary Born, ND

My zone is 9b to 10b. Our last frost date for where I live in Southern California was on January 27th. I actually am planning on sowing what I will grow inside until they get a bit bigger. I have to container garden here as my place has a lot of cement surrounding it.

I have a folding table set up in my dining room for my seed starts. When people come over we just entertain with it there. Most of our people that come over are curious about or have their own garden; so they don’t seem to mind. It’s our real life. If you’re close enough to us to come over to our home then we probably have already talked to you about all of our seed starts anyway lol

I live in 6B, up near Traverse City. Oh boy, last year was my first with my greenhouse. I started my tomatoes and peppers on March 5th! Lol those poor things, I uppotted them 4 times before I could plant in the garden. Learned my lesson. Great video for beginners Rachel.

I'm in zone 6b central WA, I have my potted citrus trees in my dining area and have my plant starts going. I usually start my peppers mid-January and then tomatoes late February, but this time the intrusive thoughts won, and I started my tomatoes 2 weeks ago luckily for me I have a 6x8 poly greenhouse in-between my garage and the neighbor's wooden fence so I will be able to get them out into earth boxes once they get pretty large mid-March.

I too use my dining room. My basement is cool and my body hates stairs. It is warm in the dining room and the other thing i have found is when people come over it is a conversation starter.

We live in zone 8b. I went outside last weekend and cut six sprigs of rosemary. I stripped the bottom leaves, dipped them in water then rooting compound. Put them in seed starting mix in 4 inch pots. So far they look pretty good. I am going to plant a couple around the yard. They are great for cooking but have several uses in the ground. One is it's a natural flea repellent,. Our dogs walk around and under them which gets the oil on them. Then our dogs are flea free and smell nice also.

It's funny, to me at least. I've never bought a start from the store. I first began my gardening journey 4 years ago and always started everything from seeds. I guess it just seemed the right thing to do in my spirit ya know? I'm like you Rachel, I always start way more than I need or have room for🥰. I gift them as well. Happy healthy gardening too all! Good video. Some nurseries have a bin full of free pots too. You can also use a seed blocker, or make your own seed blocker. If you have food grade sturdy trays (I have some dishwashing bins, some people use pizza dough trays), you can run them through the dishwasher on sanitize setting. I have sweet potatoes growing all year long as pretty house plants, and then take cuttings from those, and plant a whole sweet potato on it's side in some soil or moist coco coir and it makes a ton of slips. Many of the organic sweet potatoes from the grocery store start to make slips before I get a chance to eat them, so those ends get cut off and kept alive through the winter as well. Hope that helps! Tall tomatoes are great to plant deep! The stem will develop roots all along it, making it able to uptake more nutrients and water😍

I’m going to start my seeds in my studio! I just moved into my house in June, so I just had a few tomatoes and peppers planted in large flower pots. This year I’m bucking the HOA and planting a lot of containers for my patio, but I’m going to get my seeds started inside. (I’d rather till up most of my backyard for a garden, leaving an area for my puppy, but I have to have permission from the HOA. Maybe if I tell them that, they’ll let me put in some raised beds!) I'm in that little blue cold zone in southern Ingham county :-( I also start a lot of seeds in the house as well as in a little hoop house and little green house and winter sowing. I buy the Premier peat moss at Menards and add a few things to it to start my seeds. Sometimes I just use the peat moss and see no difference until the seeds sprout then I need to add a dash of fertilizer.

I'm getting ours set up too! Usually I buy onion starts but I'm trying my hand at doing our own (trying to go more heirloom). By the time those get planted out, tomatoes and peppers will be started. Planning time is so exciting! 🙂

I grew 100% of my starts last year for the first time. It was not perfect and some I started way too early, some a bit too late...but it worked. Can't wait to get started this year. I just need a different set up and may invest in a shelving system. You reminded me I need to order my onion sets.

Very informative video. Thank you so much as always. As a new transplant to SW Michigan, this gave me alot of insight on when to start my garden. I really like how you broke it down to what dates to start the seeds and also to direct sow. I am looking forward to seeing what I can accomplish in our new area. By the way, I love your blue sweater, how perfect for the Lions. I need to get one so the next play off game I can wear it!!!

We are in zone 6a. I’m getting ready to seed start celery and luffa in the next week. I can sympathize with you on space with seed starting. When we renovated our basement, I had my husband put in an island that I use for starting my plants. It completely takes over that space for about 3 months!!😬 I love your shelving setup!!

I’m in 4b June first week earliest I can plant. So March seeds of tomatoes and pepper start inside and like you it is fit wherever in the house! I do have a small greeen house but only start heating around April for plants to big for my indoor set up!

I started stevia plants a couple weeks ago. On a heat mat with a humidity dome. I knew they had a poor germination rate so I am happy with the few plants that made it. I still have a while to start my other plants. I am getting anxious!

I am new well kinda new to seed starting indoors I started pumpkin seeds indoors between 2000 and 2003 but now plant them outside but this will be the first for me to sprout tomato pepper and other seeds indoors I have to use my basement only place I have really I usually buy starts from a store but there is not much variety so I went on line and ordered seeds and bought a heat mat 1 grow light cause I can only afford 1 right now seed starting mix solo cups seed trays and will give it a go starting my hand at starting my own I have maybe spent a little over $100 I kight try and use my led shop ligh as well I love gardening I love your garden it is always so wonderful I wish I could seed start i my living room my family would have a cowLOL!

I giggled at your weiner dog licking the puppy bed. One of mine does that too. I just started my tomatoes peppers and eggplants Jan 24 and a lot of my tomatoes are already up. Yay!!! I've never used the micro powdered stuff when up potting my starts. I wait until they are 3 or 4 inches tall, depending on size of the seed tray. Then up pot them into bigger pots or solo cups. Weather permitting, I sometimes just plant directly into the garden. I've never sterilized my seed trays either. Been gardening for 35 years. Never have had any issues.

Just wanted to share what i learned from an amish friend last yr. They did cucumber hanging baskets (you plant 3 plants in a basket like a triangle) you water them every day if it gets real hot then you water them twice a day and you fertilize once a wk. I had beautiful cucumber hanging baskets on my covered porch all summer (they get long) but it was so nice to walk out my porch and pick a cuk! We enjoyed them so much I'm definitely doing it again! 😊

I follow a couple gardeners with similar grow zones as I’m 5b in Nebraska. Grow fully with Jenna is in Ohio I believe. She’s a great resource and MIgardener in Michigan. Although Rachel is one of my favorites!

Hi Rachel! I live in your county; I think pretty close to you. You inspired me (during Covid) to create my own garden space. Thanks for all your content! I see that you boil your seed starting mix. I usually do that too - following the soil mix recipe from the Rusted Gardener, but my tomatoes do poorly, so this year I decided to try Promix . I did not boil it because it contains mycorrhiza, and I didn't want to kill it. My onions and celery seedlings look better than I have ever started (I sowed them in December), so I ordered more Promix. This time, I am worried about how the mix was stored as it arrived in soaking wet packaging and I am not sure I can return it, so I am thinking about boiling it, but again I don't want to kill the organisms. Have you ever used this an boiled it with good results? Thanks for all you do! Tanya

Hey Rachel 👋👋 I gotta tell ya, I have a basement basically like yours and in a little back corner with no windows ( that's actually a good thing) I have a set up basically like yours , but many more shelves and lights and I absolutely love it! A tucked away so it's always in the same place easy to get growing. Anyway if u can do some rearranging when u put ur stations away for the year, give it a try.... It's like my little grow cave, absolutely so cozy!
