My Dog NQ'ed in Open A // AKC Obedience

NQing (also called "non-qualifying") isn't the end of the world, but it can be frustrating and disappointing, especially when it feels like it happens to you more than it happens to anyone else! I promise you're not alone. I've had my fair share of NQs, particularly recently.
Nobody likes to NQ. We hate even more to admit that we NQ'ed, but I think it's important to start sharing when it happens.

About Callie: Callie lives with, is co-owned, and co-loved by my friend, Sondi. She’s an eight year old doberman pinscher who never fails to impress me with her power and enthusiasm and is always up for learning something new as long as a significant amount of play is involved. As much I use treats when teaching Callie, she really thrives on running, jumping, fetching, and occasionally rough-housing. I used to call her “Wild Child” more often than I used her name, but now my favorite thing to call her is “Hurricane”. It’s never about calming the storm. Just riding it. :)
About Kayla: I began training dogs in 2008, starting with raising puppies to be future service dogs and fell in love with the human-canine connection. Over the last several years, I’m thankful to have had the chance to help train service dogs, therapy dogs, compete in Obedience and Rally, and introduce people to the dog sports I love.

It took me 1 year exactly. To get our preffered open title. 15 times we entered. Celebration was in order for that one. 😅 Kara is my first obedience dog. I am having a blast! Totally hooked on dog sports. On to graduate novice!

This is what I tell all my new beginner students. I give them the example of how it took 6 tries to get my last dog her CD. One time all dogs in the class NQed because mice 🐁 came through an open back door and laid a scent trail along the back wall. Chaos and hilarity ensued! I said, oh well, remember our motto, “ we may fall apart, but we’re gunna look dam good doing it!” TYSM for posting. Hmmmm ……wonder how many times Lassie just got tired of getting Timmy out of the well. 😂

Ha - I needed this tonight and appreciate it. We were cruising along with our BN and our CD (three first places!) and today was our first Open trial - Open A. He’s my first dog I’ve done any of this with. We’ve been doing so well in training and run throughs. We NQ’d - on three things in one leg today - drop on recall, retrieve over the high jump, and broad jump. It was a more quiet venue and he was aware of everything. Previously, we’ve trialed in more crowded and happening places. He’s been great with the high jump and the broad jump. He’s missed the drop on recall a few times in higher energy training with dogs running beside us. Anyway, I had no idea there were so many NQs as the difficulty progresses. People have been telling me lately. I guess I’d better hold on for the ride. Lol He’s a good boy and has some other titles in hunt tests, rally, and tricks. We are still working on agility, but we have a blue ribbon leg. :D

I have just found your channel.I think you so very much for posting this. You are talking about things that are never talked about which people need to hear. I needed to hear. Thank you for your uplifting and Positive thoughts.I will remember next time that NQ That means not quite that is such a wonderful quote. And celebrate all of the things that went right.🐾🐾

Thanks for posting this! You know BN and Novice are relatively easy (though they didn't feel like it at the time). Open exercises rally challenge the dog mentally. I was so sure we were ready. We knew the exercises, trained daily, surely we could qualify. Two day trial...day one couldn't get her nose off the floor. She was nervous but what was I going to do about it during the run? That's OK, a point for teamwork on each exercise. She did everything. And then the retrieve over high, a toss that veered right, and she returned around the Jump. Ok, surely day two will go better. No...double commands for * every * single * exercise. When she did them they were glorious though. I keep reminding myself they're called "trials" not "gimmes". And I like "npt quite". I had been calling them "recalibration events".

Open A probably has the highest rate of NQs. It’s pretty normal for only 1 or 2 dogs to Q out of a dozen entries at the trials I’ve done this fall with my novice A dog. But as you say, each time it’s ‘just not quite’! Tara and I successfully got our CDX title last month at our 7th trial attempt. I was ecstatic!

At my last trial. We showed all three days. Out of 3 days we got one leg. Score 186. That was the middle day. The first day and the last day she did not want to down. That has not been a problem before. When we where going out of the building one day. A very high level competitor. Said to me , it happens, I blew all three rings today. She does both open and utility. UDX, has gone to nationals. So yes, it happens to everyone. It’s a sport, you never always win. If we qualify I consider it a win. We only compete against ourselves. My dog is my first obedience dog. She is two now. We need one more leg to have open title. I just have so much fun training and going to the shows. NQ or not. Thanks for posting about the unmentionable. Ha Ha!

Ive only NQd once (so far) I knew we were not quite ready, and the trial was outside on grass. But I wanted to support Obedience and Rally at my breeds Nationals. It was sad, but i took away from the experience what i needed to practice on and a month later we went 3 for 3 over 3 days for our BN title. My proudest moment was taking 3rd place (in a class of 3) with our score being the highest it was all weekend long AND only one single point away from 1st place. Now we are working on our RE and CD titles and after that im aiming for RACH. Shes my A dog, my first show performance dog and we do all our training in my living room. Win or loose we have fun together.

Because people are so shy about it, I'm fond of posting to my facebook friends screenshots of videos of my dog and I doing things wrong (in rally and agility) because it's so helpful to talk about (and I know no shame anyway). I post the good bits too.

I’ve just started obedience. I usually compete in Rally and was astonished at the number of NQ’s in obedience. I call them fatal errors. Something minor can be a “fatal error” in obedience. My first attempt was a first place the second was an NQ. I did get my title at the next trial, now moving onto the next level and I’m sure there will be more NQs in my future!
