Is this the most requested bike build I've ever had? I think so, it's certainly been right at the top of my list of dream trials bikes since I was a. teenager!
BIG...HUGE thanks to Peter who got in touch and donated this bike, that's one of the most generous things ever happen to me and my appreciation can't be expressed! I love it and I hope this video has been worth the wait.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers!

Love the build! +1 for adding the race face stem / azonic bar combo back on, but that's just me... and bc this looks so similar to my old 2001 hardtail Balfa in bright red. I ran the same kujo but on the front. Avid mech discs.. bb7s? which are still awesome today Would've loved some of those cranks back then. Broke so many square taper cranks.. 20:48 one thing i did when i first swapped my bike to single speed but never seen anyone else do was routing the chain under both pullies instead of the convetional manner, this way it'd be nicely tensioned and wouldn't swing as much since it kinda negates the swing point of the deraileur

Wanted one of these so badly after seeing Akrigg on one at Addingham but they were out of my league back then. Had to make do with a cheap copy that still had square top and down tubes and similar geometry. You hit the jackpot! I always wanted a Pace frame with Pace crank-set (or was that a Race Face crank-set?). What a great combination! My preference of course was for the anodised aluminium frames but I have to say the powder-coated red version looks gorgeous! 1:58 What's the big deal? It can be gusseted and re-welded. There's tons of good welders out there. The question is: do bicycle riders know this or do they chuck their broken frames in the recycling bin without checking first? 10:15 Any half-decent machinist can fix that. Shouldn't be that expensive. 11:33 An Alex 24 on a Pace frame with Pace hub! What? Alex 24 were bottom of the pile! Not even Halfords would stock them! 18:35 Middleburns looked ghastly though. I wouldn't use such a set unless everything else on the bike was just as vulgar looking. 21:50 This is the obvious choice.(32:33 agrees) 22:44 If you're that worried about it make a mould of it to have it re-cast if it brakes. Better yet, make a laser scan and have a few spares 3-d printed. 28:03 Are you sure the seat-post alone would not be more comfortable? This looks mega painful! 29:05 I'd be more interested in how much that thing cost. 31:30 You need to place a protector over the vintage NOS Pace chain-stay protector! I know I would. 31:13 You brought back a lot of memories, especially with the Azonic stem and the Tioga not shown. I'm definitely subscribing. Oh, I was already subscribed - never mind. Great skills too! One word of caution though: I would be so worried about being period correct with the tyres and especially the inner tubes. These things deteriorate exponentially with age. The last thing you need on a period bike like this is some serious damage due to a burst inner tube or, worse, tyre wall!

I consolidated all my comments into one so that it would look less annoying without realising you had already replied to each one of them @@Ali_Clarkson ! First time this happens to me! Unfortunately, I cannot undo the deletions so I'm not sure which replies corresponded to which comments exactly. I guess you're right about re-welding the frame, it would weaken it without heat treatment which in the case of this painted frame would mean you'd lose the original paintwork. I guess that is one huge downside of aluminium and titanium frames... you gotta to take care of them. Which one of the comments you think I'm dead wrong about? The one about the hub? Or the one about old tyres maybe? For the hubs, reckon, worst case, the machinist would cut off the broken flange on the lathe, remove the metal down to the carbon tube, make a new flange and glue it back on the tube. Easy-peasy. Probably cheaper to buy another hub of course. Alternatively, if you don't want the ultimate strength, the missing bit of the flange could be built up with welding and subsequent machining would give it the original shape. Probably harder than it sounds with dubious results. I'm no machinist by the way. I had never seen a red Pace frame before this video btw. I'm torn now because I always thought that the Pace anodised frames were the coolest. I also did not know they are not as strong as they looked. I always thought that they were the meanest and toughest out there based on their looks alone. Of course back then I could only dream about a Pace frame...

The Shimano silent clutch hubs engaged pretty much instantly but felt so spongy under load that they were very hard to get used to for XC riding, not to mind trials. Box (Formerly Stealth) and Onyx make Sprag Clutch based hubs for sale at the moment (More or less the same thing as a roller clutch), but they're not cheap. The only Shimano roller clutch hub I'm aware of now is the Alfine 11, and it feels noticeably spongy under any kind of power, with 2nd gear being more or less unusable it's so spongy. I love the silent running and low maintenance for commuting though, the 2 kg ish weight it adds to the back axle means bunnyhopping the bike is a challenge.

@@Ali_Clarkson Ahhh maybe not then... Red Letter Media - I believe they coined the term "memberberries' when referring to all the little 'ohh, I remember that' moments the various recent Star Trek series chucked in for fan service. I may be wrong about 'em coming up with it but that's how I know the word, and the first time I heard it.

V-brakes on the back of the fork seem like a bad idea. Braking will push them against the bolts that will loosen with vibration and everything will soon explode, instantly killing everyone in the vicinity in a most painful manner indeed.

Now I realize it's the complete opposite and the front mounted V-brakes should cause nuclear annihilation.
