You have to be around while people are working in your house, that’s my experience too with my bahay kubo, while living in the USA. It was built in my mother’s land but it just drains my money away even if relatives are supposed to be keeping an eye 👁️ 😢

The main thing I learned from building in the Phil is that there is no incentive to work fast for locals. Most will be unemployed when the job is done, so why not make it last. Also , if you build in some defects, you can continue to earn money. I solved this problem by setting a budget and offered a % of the savings if they beat it.

All the things that come to mind while watching you walk around talking about your challenges... I wish you the best and truly hope that you have a viable plan B that involves something that you actually know what you are doing. No negativity, I truly hope that things can work out for you on whatever you have your sights set on. That whole upper eastern shoreline from Siargao to Catanduanes is in the bullseye for the strong low pressure weather systems that always travel from east to west and rake the eastern side of the Philippines. If the pretty bird of paradise plants are actually lotus berthelotii (Parrot's Beak) then beware, they are used as ground cover, meaning "they spread" and can be very invasive once they get going good. I have some and they are in pots and they are pretty and they are contained so that they don't completely consume all of the ground space on my lot. Double check whatever variety of plant that it is that you purchased. The sweet potato vine is another conversation. You have been through three work crews if I have the count straight. You mentioned that next will be trying to get local help. Every time you bring workers in and they do sub standard work (in your opinion) given the plans and instructions they have to work with, then you fire them. Sounds like you have had a lot of guys come and go in and out of that property you decided to build your tiny wood framed and corrugated metal paneling house on (imagine what another Odette will do to it). And those guys don't have good memories of working for you and most likely a low level of respect. Couple that with the fact that word travels very very fast along the bamboo grapevine, everybody knows everybody else's business almost instantaneously especially when you are vlogging about it. You might want to give careful consideration to how you manage being away from that lot for any length of time doing things like visa runs out of the country. Food for thought.

When building a house 1. Check completed projects of the builder/ architect to see if it meet your standard before hiring. 2. Make sure you know exactly what you want ( materials/ finishes/ floor plan/ outlet and lighting placement) . Gather design stock photos and print it out and show it to the builder and to the crew so they know exactly what you talking about and to avoid changes during construction that can slow the progress. 3. Visit the site at least once a week to monitor the progress. 4. Keep in mind that the average building cost in the Philippines for concrete house( material/ labor) is 20,000 - 25000 pesos per sqm for standard finishes. 30k to 35000k per sqm for premium finishes

I don't know if it will work. But making a deal with a construction crew, by saying they will make more money if they finish faster. Give them an adjustable rate and a reasonable time to finish, and get an agreement signed. That would pressure them to finish in a timely manner. Watcha think?

Irresponsible workers. That’s almost same what happened to my home, when it almost finished and heavy rain came, it leaked inside the sala and when I came home last year the ceiling broke bcoz of the leaking and the termites ate the woods. Sad but still thanks GOD (The One Who Created us and gave us life) for everything. Sooner or later we will die and left this world and return to our one and only Creator. Change your workers, manage and keep moving. May God guide us all to the right path always.

it's hard to find a good construction crew in the provinces. you really need to do research (and there isn't a lot of ways to find out) mostly via asking others they worked with in the past. i dont know if you hired a professional crew from a construction company (with architect & engineer) which would be more expensive, but that's usually your best option for quality.

Here is a few tips Don't pay for grass the climate and rain it will grow back fast Your tiny home looks great next time you build just concrete the whole including roof as this also gives you roof space as well. Workers here are not really trained they do as told and learn from someone else who might have some knowledge. So this is why your project is taking so long. An engineer would have sped this up and maybe even saved you some money. Regardless your living a good life, surf, sun, beach and great weather. Whats a few road bumps or hurdles they just make life a little more interesting.

doing the same work is common in ph.. its called backjob. 1st tell your workers to redo them for free, or treat them with lunch. if they dont comply, take them to the barangay. now about the overcharging, there's not really much you can do about that. coz you might have already made a handshake deal and already agreed about the price. but the backjob. you can force them to do it for free.

Hi Tal, you need to hire a local person that you can trust as project manager/supervisor/foreman who can look after the day to day work for you while you are away. in the island isnt that expensive to hire a foreman. that situation reminds me when my brother was building his house and it was timely that i was also there for a holiday coz i live overseas. and i witnessed how slow the work progressed everyday and the workers were just abusing taking a break all the time talking. so i spoke to my brother to hire a person who can represent him and i confronted the workers, reminding them that they can only have a break during a specific time of the day during work. and i told the foreman/supervisor/manager to fire a lazy worker. told yah, it was really faster than expected. their attitude have changed. but i heard a gossip saying, am a bit strict to them. but that's ok with me... lol

C’mmon Filipino builders don’t tarnish the builder’s reputation in Philippines. In my past experienced with builders. I think I just buy a prefabricated house. Not easy watching ur hard earned money going down the drain. Builders like these are giving the good builders a bad name.
