Nightmare coming true....Are S65s really this unreliable or is this just bad luck? Maybe this is why BMW ditched the V8. It was running and driving so well until all of a sudden......

Seems like this was a problem in timing. This engine has hydraulic timing tensioners, and if one gets stuck due to varnish / not being serviced regularly, they let off the tension and your valves can skip timing. That weird sound you were hearing before could be chain slapping the tensioner or rattling about. If you're thinking about rebuilding this engine, probably the best place to learn is M539 Restorations channel. He hand built this baby on camera with all the torque specs and proper factory procedures, a real goldmine of information. I really hope this won't mean you're selling the car, because this is a great car for the channel!

I had the Rod bearings done on my E90 M3 after a ton of research. I fortunately was steered in the direction of experts who advised that rod bearing replacement isn't a straight forward job if you do it correctly, as in, measure for wear and tear as sometimes you may need to use different size bearings. Also, it has been determined that the main bearings wear out at a similar rate so they should be replaced as well when doing the rod bearings. After having both done, I am so pleased for the peace of mind very time I drive the car. It's my daily and I love it. If you go for a quality rebuild, you'll have the same peace of mind and will experience this awesome car for yourself.

Probably crankshaft was too worn and would not accept new bearings. This is common when changing bearings through the oil pan without measuring the crankshaft. Look "BMW M3E92 - Wybuchł Silnik Dlaczego ???- Grupa Rajdowy Felix", he's got same isue in e92 after rod bearings change. The piston looks also the same.

KZfaqrs made the S65 and S85 engine trending on rod bearings issue, You should check the forums on the S62 engine and the dreaded carbon build up it was like a virus that at the end of reading the threads u would feel u might have a carbon build up issue…This type of engine issue became a plague up to this day, which begs the question that ive been meaning to find out as to how many engine failure these engines have that was caused by rod bearings? and not user error because ive only seen deep scouring on a handful but no bent rods or engine failure. Ive owned and still own M cars and have them all boosted with all stock internals. Per my experience for this specific engine i had the VF and The ESS supercharger on my e92 and can't complain and didn't mess with the rod bearings or whatsoever. I think the key on the cars is first read manual i know its boring but BMW didnt just produce the manual just to look proper and cute at the same time. Proper warmup is key i mean it should be on top of ur list. At the end day i'd say get an oil analysis from blackstone first should be in order, next would be compression and the usual suspects on checking the health of the engine before doing the surgery on something not needed to begin with. I hate to say this and sympathize as well but my verdict is user error. Btw before i forget make sure ur tools are up to spec specially torque wrench and example would be just simply dropping this tools can mess their calibration. And as car enthusiast to another… my advice is to "Treat every build as if it is ur last and always be positive it will help u greatly not just in building ur dreams cars but in life in general" Hope to see the rebuild, learn from it and make it better" Good luck

This is such retarded levels of copium to defend a shit design from BMW. It's a shit design, just like b6/b7 Audi S4 plastic timing chain tensioners and early c63 head bolt. A shit design is a shit design. Idk why people defend these piece of shit s65 and s85 engines. BMW is all about the inline six cylinder anyways.

Being that the rod bearings were just replaced, I was leaning towards a VANOS issue for that noise. But I’m not sure that would cause a piston to detonate like that. Possibly something VANOS failure related ran through the engine and blocked oil flow to that rod bearing, then it let go due to oil starvation. Interested to see what the crank bearings look like. Good luck!

Possibly they used silicone to reseal the engine after rod bearing change. They used too much-> excess silicone magically ended up in the oil squirter which caused the failed cylinder to detonate due too lack of cooling. Possibly also the reason why the other cyl 4 driver side had scoring because of lack of cooling-> too much thermal expansion-> scoring.

It’s unfortunate that the BMW had a catastrophic failure, but it could be saveable. You could do a full engine breakdown and see how bad the damage is and see if it can be massaged with a good bore and honing. Thats good content! If it’s too far gone, LS swap 2.0! This time, supercharge it! Or get a wrecked Hellcat and swap the engine from that. Don’t let this hiccup get you down, Matt. This is creating content for your channel and a new adventure. Keep up the good work! I’m looking forward to what you choose to do with this one.

😪 boring. Also these engines don’t have that much of a troubled history. The only major thing is changing out the rod bearings. Otherwise it’s just old plastic that can break and just send the car into limp mode. Also this v8 makes the car what it is, if he’s going to ls swap it he should’ve bought a different bmw like a 335i with a blown engine

Upper rod bearing failure, caused the piston to fall too far in the cylinder bore, rings then hit the sleeve stopping the piston, rod then went through the piston causing the damage you’ve got.

My advice would be with every car that hasn’t ran in a long time and you are not familiar with the history of it, do a compression test! With most engine blocks it is not that much work to reach the spark plugs. I won’t say that this would have prevented the engine malfunction but if it would make that much compression, and you would enter the cilinder with the camera, you would already see some damage and possibly prevent further damage! However nice car! Hope to buy one myself to restore it

I wonder if if it jumped timing and shared a valve off which caused the piston to explode taking the rest of the engine out on the way down I have had many of these engines and the only time I’ve had them fail is when it has been Rod bearing related I did notice in your clip when you started it there was quite loud rattle for a few seconds while oil pressure was building and this could’ve been a bad timing chain so it would be interesting to see if it is actually jumped timing The loud rattle could also have been lower oil pressure or a lazy oil pump theory of course

A very similar thing happened to a motorcycle I owned. I got my bike back from the garage and I noticed it didnt feel right. When I pulled up I had a quick listened to the engine. I noticed there was a metallic tapping coming from the engine (At that point I was not aware of what engine knock was). However, once I revved it up a little it went away. So, there I was, driving at 70 mph on the highway, all vulnerable and that, when the bike went from 70 to 0 in under a second. Before I knew it the fuel tank was smashed straight in between my legs and the bike had completely died. The bike refused to start and every time I turned the engine over there was a lovely metallic jangle from it. I had it towed to a garage (at quite a significant expense I might add) where I was told the piston had given the valve a little kiss. Engine fucked. The end.

The failure on that cylinder was the rod journal. Either was not lubed enough or the assembly was not correct. The engine (especially that cylinder wall) is toast, might be able to pick up a used high mileage one for cheap and do a full rebuild!
