Earthbag Building in the Tropics

We started building our home 5 years ago. It took us 18 months to finish it. We love it so much because I was able to use my hands and discover that I'm capable of doing things I never imagined.
I hope this video inspires people who want to build their own home in a sustainable way. After more than 5 years our house still stands strong.

Yes you've kept a sense of spaciousness even tho you say it's small... it doesn't feel like it at all from your video. Lovely to have all that nature around you and your mirador takes full advantage of that. I find your house very attractive and so logically cost effective... reality is we should all be downsizing to what is essential, why work too hard to feed the beasts who prey on our debts? Living mostly free and happy, we shouldn't 'want' more than just that. 🤗 👍 Un gran trabajo!

I agree with you that this is a great thing to do. However to say this is "supposed to be how humans live" is a very ignorant thing to say. Some people shoudn't live like this or phyiscally cant. Plus to ignore the advancements we have made in society with tecknogly to enhance our lives is very import to many people, including you. I can say for a fact that it has effected you because your on youtube... So it's a nice way to live but its by no means the way your SUPPOSED to live

The 'advancements in society " is whats destroying the planet. Do you have any idea how bad concrete is on the environment or using lumber to build homes? Not only that earthbag homes cost a fraction to build conpared to a traditional stick build home. To build a stick build home you are going to have to finance for 30 years generally which in return you become a victim to capitalism . Any advancement in society is to benefit those at the top of the social order first. The social order doesn't want tbose on lower end of the order to own anything they want those at the bottom to finance everything which in return keeps you working like a slave. Earthbag homes are cheap ,durable and easy to build .

OMG this is amazing. You should really talk about your experiences and what would have done differently to this house. and some tips for people who may want to build something like this. It is a paradise especially the top floor you can even sleep if your have 100% cover for netting. I was in south India in in the eastern ghats and it is dry tropics. similar climate. but its amazing. I love tropics. This is very simple and beautiful. It looks like temperature inside the house is cool on hot days. It look very pleasant.

80 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit is not that hot. In central US, we have already reached over 90 degrees F and it's not even summer yet. What makes it seem hotter is that humidity. Lovely house, btw. I want to build one but don't have the land for it. Also, what are the red flowers? You have them in front of the house and outside the kitchen window.

Hello Thanks for showing off your home. I'm old, fat, and lazy and that's not near as pretty as it sounds. Crippled now too. The knees eh? Oh well, sucks to be me. Still, I have been planning a superadobe structure for years and finally could afford to start. I have a very limited income. Still, the local bag manufacturer had a client go bankrupt and was stuck with 40,000 24x30 bags suitable for the work. So far I managed to buy 875 discounted bags and believe I'll buy as many as I can until they are gone or I am done. They are not that great a discount either. I'll shoot for three thousand in case I want another structure or a bigger one. I had a design of two interlocking circles with a door where they interlock. One circle will have the flue for the wood stove and the other will have the skylight. Dreams eh? Still, everything is fluid for now. I'm slowly collecting everything I think I'll need for an off grid dwelling. A couple of 100 watt solar panels, the large inverter, .. just need the batteries now. Pretty sure I'll rig a little rocket stove to heat up a large quantity of sand and heat that way too. In floor heat eh? It will be a shallow well and a Swedish composting toilet. It's built in with a long sloping stepped slide to the bottom where the once a year clean out door is. Gotta get the slop just right, too steep and it slides down too quick and not steep enough could plug up the works. The system has a flue/pipe through the roof that takes care of any order but you have to have a tight seal on the lid or you lose your heat. Sucks it right up and out with the order. I'll have a small workshop or three over long weekends to start and count on my good cooking to bring the labourers back. Just see how it goes and play it as I see it. That and my years in the entertainment industry as a host left me knowing how to make people feel welcome and when people feel welcome it generates good will, ... and it's amazing what happens with a little good will. I'm shooting for as simple as possible with the "sand pile" I inherited. About two acres of 6 to 10 feet deep sand dredged from the harbour years ago and piled in the low wet end of the field. It used to be higher than road level but has settled a lot since then. I can't think of anything better. Because of the shortage of soil I'm thinking a little cement will do the trick. I'll make three or four test bags first to get the mixture right. Oh, I'm northeast Canaduh, ... it gets as cold and wet here as it does get nice. I'm thinking a good water proof layer of plaster or cement for the outside and a breathable plaster for the inside. Being a 24/7 365 day a year caregiver for two elderly people does cramp my style so I'll just change up the style a bit. I live here for free as the caregiver but will need a place of my own someday and it's just across the road if I can get it built. Dirt cheap and labour intensive eh? I'll be counting on a little respite from the rest of the family of course, but that's been a rare event ever since the pandemic and all. I was under the impression the 24x30 inch flat bags would make blocks about 16x24x4. To make the adobe blocks 6 inch high would make the wall too narrow at 12 inches. Every inch counts eh? Sorry for rambling, .. I don't have a lot of people to talk to about this project so I unloaded on you, ... Have a great one.

I mixed 50% clay, 40% sand, 10%straw. It's recommended to use more sand but sadly we don't have sand in our property. We had to buy it and the most expensive and difficult part was the delivery. We live in a remote area and the road is not great. The delivery driver refused to drive to our construction site and dumped the sand by the driveway. We had to load it in our truck and drive it up multiple times. It was so exhausting that we decided to use less sand. Still worked out.
