@@paultsworld Actually it has been excessively hot and humid. Mosquitos rampant. So I have not been able to get out much😥 But got out yesterday evening mosquitos and all to water. It really lifted my spirits. I collect rain water from my tote garden and this compost tea feeds everything. Couldn't wait another day. Feels like 90's F today. Won't be staying out long. Finally had to use sprinkler on my front no dig, organic cottage garden last night. I'm 72 and not in good health so poor gardens have suffered. Do you have a solution for mildew on my zucchini and pumpkin leaves?

Sorry its been so hot but hopefully things will cool down for you shortly. Great idea making compost tea. It’s strange isn’t it, how mildew and zucchini go together. I’m not an expert on vegetables but I find the mildew doesn’t affect the produce so I simply remove the leaves when the mildew stops the leaf functioning. There always seems to be plenty of leaves left to keep the plant growing. It does look awful though!

A fantastic video , I live in Surrey and am a beginner with gardening and learning daily...I loved the way you took the video slowly with the names in captions too. For someone like me your videos are informative which helps me think of how to go about doing my next bit of planting, I am fond of perennials and plants that keep green through the winter when everything else is spent. Paul, I live in the states....I just found your site and I will live vicariously through your many tours. I am now past being able to do planting myself...however, I will never stop wishing that I could. We have a large property and I have always wanted it to have many paths and “rooms” to wander through. You have that in your garden and it is so full of wonderful seasonal interest. We reorganized our garden within the last four years, always something new to learn. Birds love mahonia. They also can spread by runner so be sure to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t take over. Your garden is lovely. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Paul. Great video as always. I have 3 Mahonias in my garden and starlings arrive in droves to my garden just as the "grapes" are ripening and they strip every last one of them. They then move onto my 3 cherry trees and when those are stripped the first harvest of figs is ripening.....they arrive in early spring all skinny and by the time they leave they are positively waddling.

@@paultsworld I like starlings and I don't mind feeding them. They are usually gone by the time I collect my second harvest of figs which is just as well since my kids love fresh figs off the tree and Lily the Labrador rushes out every morning to see if any have fallen during the night. I see your spirea is doing great.

We used caplsin and kelp alot on our rubarbs and potatoes and they loved it. I guess with the Labrador sandy soul it supplied good nutrients !

Yes, the rhubarb likes lots of food and water. As I'm on sand I find it hard to give it enough water in the Summer. I've got early potatoes just showing through the soil at the moment so I'm mounding up.

Love your garden and all the shrubs and trees you have. I wasn't familiar with the Rowan tree love the airiness of it and berries. I am going to leave my dahlias in this fall and see what happens. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Pam. Put plenty of compost over the dahlias in Winter to keep them a bit warmer and cut the stems (which are hollow) right down so water doesn't get inside. Good luck.

I don't have many problems here Khay, slugs of course and squirrels digging things up. No rabbits here either so I generally expect the garden to look much the same in the morning as I left it in the evening.

Hi Paul, I love the dahlias especially the single ones. Love all of your native trees too my garden isn't big enough for trees just wild flowers. My foxgloves have just about finished but they'll seed like yours. A true bee magnet is greater knapweed which I've got it's often seen growing on wasteland or roadsides. I loved the shot of the jay Paul don't see many of them these days but such beautiful birds. Thanks for another great vid & have a good weekend mate

Great you’ve got plenty of the ubiquitous foxglove - I so like them. Thanks for reminding me about greater knapweed I haven’t had any for a long time - I’d better remedy that. YE gods Paul,I nearly missed your video.It got overlooked amongst a load of other messages.That would never do.Your garden is looking so lush.For mid summer I thought some plants could look tired but no,they look so healthy.Love that you show us your areas where all the practical stuff happens.Compost bins,twigs to be mulched etc.Its all part of the garden.Your pond has grabbed my attention.it looks so different from this angle.Im with you on trees.we dont have a huge garden but we are placing trees according to height and width for the size plot we have.Trees cement the garden and give height and interest and a resting spot for the birds.We planted a french lilac and a sweetpea tree yesterday.More roses and clematis for up the pagolas.Hope they grow well.I laughed with you over the Solomon Seal.Theres always a wee disaster going on somewhere eh?.Thanks again Paul for the fun visit to your garden.Such fun as Miranda would say Hugs from nz

Hey Yvonne don't miss my videos! 😁 Thank you for your comments - I think the garden is looking extra lush because after that drought it has rained a lot, one day it rained all day and night. That's great you are planting plenty of trees - they really do add so much -as well as of course height. I like the ways birds have their favourite place to perch - I just know where they will be. French lilac sounds interesting - I'll have to google it. Hugs back to you from England

@@paultsworld thankyou Paul for your reply.Your videos dont usually sneak past me.Bit preoccupied awaiting new grandchild in London.We have finally had a couple of fine days to potter in the garden.Looking at your clematis,sent me straight to the nursery to get some more.They give very quick coverage.Like you I have some areas Id like to cover.I also got some pink nastursium seeds to plant.They are newly out here so thought they could meander through some nakes areas of garden till I decide what to plant.Also planted some more feijoa trees.The fruit is delicious.Do you know it.?Your pear and apple trees look great.The comice is delicious,and love the old variety of bramley apple.Please keep showing your videos.They bring alot of joy as do you to other gardeners.Love your giggles of amusement as you spot the goings on behind your back like insects scoffing your plants.What else can we do ?Be safe and enjoy your week Paul.😁

Hello, Paul, my dearest friend !! It is always a great pleasure to watch the tours in your wonderful garden which is an explosion of life .... I'd also like to have a space where plants and flowers can grow. I only have a terrace with a few flowers but it is not very large and is very exposed to the sun and in summer, unfortunately, the plants often dry out. I probably don't have your green thumb !! This is how it is said in Italy when a person is as good as you and an expert like you in treating and caring for your garden and your plants. Thanks for these moments of serenity !! Birds really like Mahonia berries and they are also used in herbalism. In America it’s called Oregon grape. Such a joyful garden.

That's really interesting Jeanne - I've seen the blackbirds dive in there but not quite seen what they were doing...I'm really pleased that I've yet another shrub with berries for the wildlife. Oregon Grape - lovely name.

Pertalote 45 Interesting they don’t where you are! A number of people have seen them and I’ve always just suspected it but today caught one in the act - I’m delighted.

Margaret, I love snakes - used to have one as a pet! It was a cute British grass snake, I took it for walks in the garden errrr..... I've just googled your brown snakes - yikes!!!

@@paultsworld Australians take some sort of twisted pride in having nine out of ten of the most venomous and deadly snakes in The World. Our claim to fame! Unfortunately one moved into our garden and is metres away from our backdoor, I'm breaking into a cold sweat just thinking about next summer. I have a cunning plan, I will overwater that area to flush it out so that it relocates, they like it dry! Oh, BTW, I like nonvenomous snakes, too !

I remember reading about Australian snakes as a boy at school. What a shame you missed out on all 10! 🤣. We have just three snakes, with one being poisonous - the adder.

@@paultsworld I am sure we have 11-20 on the list of the world's deadliest snakes as well...hahaha. The adders, do they enter gardens? or are they pretty elusive? Adders sound QUITE venomous. BTW interesting story, someone was driving fast and was pulled over by the highway patrol police and the man said he was bitten by a brown snake and he was on the way to the hospital, the patrolman thought, Sure you are! Look in the back, I have killed the snake and it is in the car boot... the policeman saw indeed that the snake was dead in the vehicle and the man by this stage looked ashen and very stressed. He went to hospital etc, and soon after received a speeding fine AND a fine for killing native fauna.

Oh my goodness what a story! I wonder if humans are a protected species? Our adders are nowhere near as deadly as any of yours - probably struggles to make it into the top 1000. They are found on heath land and moorland, quite reclusive - you would have to really go out of your way to see one. I've never seen one but would love to.

It's a Pendulus Sedge, the tall arching grass like plant. Native, very invasive. bullfinches love the seeds if you leave it alone. my garden is full of them, have to pull them up when small. But i like them too.

Thank you for letting me know Viviana. I love the way it looks but have found it even in the front garden. I'd love to see a bullfinch swinging on it; would make a brilliant photograph - I have plenty of bullfinches but they spend their time on the sunflower hearts - I'll point out the sedge to them!

Hi Paul, I love your videos and could sit and watch them all day. Like you, I have never had success when lifting dahlias so I too leave them in situ and they come back year after year. Aren't the self seeders wonderful? Who doesn't like a freebie! Take care.

Hello Paul...I enjoy your garden, choice of plants and your sense of humour. I felt that I needed to warn you about the variegated plant creeping along your log border in front of your wonderful pond. This is chameleon plant, spreads by long roots like goutweed and is best used to cover steep slopes for preventing soil erosion. You will need to remove all the roots or you will have it forever, everywhere. We are dealing with this invasive plant in one of our public gardens here in Canada. It has a waxy smell when you pull it out. Sorry to give you bad news about a plant that looks nice but be wary and good luck...

I was a little naïve about this plant and it hasn't been too bad in my garden so far but...I think I'll systematically dig it out as I can see how it's creeping along the edges and under plants out of sight. Hi there Paul - great show. I think that little green leaf plant in front of the yellow loostrife is Houttuynia. It smells awful and is a real thug here in the San Francisco bay area. I had to pull mine out. cheers - Lee

Lovely garden, very informative tour and I love your passion for your plants and the wildlife! I believe your weeds with the pink flowers are willowherbs. Also, the other very common small ones with white flowers are bittercress. And the white flowered plant in the pond are Houttuynia or Chameleon plant. Isn't the plant you were tugging at a purple loosestrife btw? :)

3:29 couldnt agree more! One of my favourite times of the year is watching the redwings and blackbirds demolish the Rowan and pyracantha berries. There is a ruck of them this year and no surprise there as it's like most other things great air quality and no traffic = lots of pollinating insects. And a lot of ours are red now like other peoples I've seen. I think that's early because I'm sure the rowen berries dont turn red usually until the end of the school holidays?? Anyway, brilliant video and thank you for sharing your beautiful garden. It's a treat to watch. PS have you intentionally cut a hole in the top of the garden shed door? If so, that's really considerate and lovely of you 😊 PPS I have also bought a long grass type plant especially for dragonfly. You inspired me!🙂

Redwings - brilliant. I once had waxwings but they stayed just half an hour - do you ever get them? I agree - I think the berries are early - turning red - in July! Ah, the hole in the shed door - it was knocked off when the wind snatched the door open in the wind a few years ago and now the robin likes to nest on one of the shelves amongst the gardening gloves - they don't miss a trick. Let me know when the first dragonfly climbs up it - do you have water soldier? the damselfly larvae use them a lot.

@@paultsworld do they skate on top of the water? Yes I've got a few of those. No waxwings, yet. Beautiful birds though. Redwings, fieldfares, miste thrushes longtailed tits are my most exotic autumn birds. Summer ones at the moment are goldfinches and greenfinches. Actually the sparrows are the rarest of my garden birds so I love to feed them more and make sure they're ok. I'll have to upload a video!. I just post my bird photos on instagram under my same YT name. Some nice sun here today the plants will love that!

I would like to see your bird photos - I'll search instagram. The water soldiers are the plants that protrude above the water in Summer - the damselfly lavae climb up the stems to emerge. I really recommend them. I still have a colony of sparrows - they're exotic now!

"Trees don't have to be enormous" :-) Of course they do not, unfortunately, I haven't noticed when my apple and pear trees and two hazel trees became such giants! I also have a maple tree which self-seeded and must be cut down in the winter if I want to avoid a dispute with a neighbour as well as damage to the fence foundations. To make matters worse, an uninvited box elder (Acer negundo), which is invasive here, has grown extremely fast despite having been trimmed a year ago. Like every year, since early spring I have been fighting with hundreds of Virginia creepers (big and small), not to mention the ever-present ground elder and multiple lilac suckers. I have no idea how you keep your garden so tidy and weed-free, chapeau bas! By the way, the slugs have dealt with my dahlias so successfully that there will be no bothersome lifting in the autumn :-)

Thankyou Paul.What ares of England are you as the feijoa grows in our minus winter temps and thrive in our moderate 20s to early 30s in summer.Not unlike your english weather now.The fruit is delicious and very unique flavour.Worth trying if you wanted.Im always looking to grow something different if I think its either interesting or looks delicious.Im currently growing a passionfruit hoping that it isnt killed off by the frosts we get.Its getting alot of frost cloth and a watchful eye.It may prove to be a disaster but will see how it goes throug the winter.Could be way more trouble than its worth but it gives me a project.Hope your summer stays pleasantly warm so you can enjoy your piece of paradise.Happiness and hugs 🐦

Hi Paul, my Dahlias and Delphiniums are blooming really welll now! I have 4 tall dahlia plants. I have the yellow one too. Huge stems, i had to put sticks around to keep the stems steady and 3 smaller dahlia plants.

Fabulous! I’ll bet that’s a fantastic display you have got. I’d better get my dahlias staked - I should have done it earlier. Delphiniums are gorgeous- I don’t have any, but used to. The gardens are really in their full Summer colours now.

Hi Paul, I have yellow loosestrife and it is a thug, you're right. I let it bloom and pull up what I can afterwards. I thought it grew from spreading underground stems rather than self-seeding though. Thanks for another lovely vid.

Mine does not self-seed and is really well-behaved, not invasive at all, perhaps due to the rather difficult conditions (poor, dry soil) in which it has grown for years in the same spot.

Lovely garden tour again, I love blackbirds. I have one that likes to perch on our roof and sing in the late afternoon. It’s a nice end to my work day. I noticed some compost bags in the background, do you mulch just parts of the garden? I was inspired and picked up a couple of rhododendrons after seeing yours in bloom! Stunning. But my soil is quite alkaline, do you have to do much to keep your Rhododendrons happy?

That's great you have your own blackbird singing - I just stand and listen. I try to mulch but I never have enough for the whole garden - I once ordered a tonne of manure - it was still nowhere near enough, one problem is it disappears so quickly through the sandy soil. I'm so pleased you've got some rhododendrons. if your soil is alkaline; how about planting them in a large hole with ericaceous compost and then put a good mulch on each year of more ericaceous soil - they'll be fine with a mix of soils. Let me know what colour the blooms are next year - they might be like mine and be multi-coloured due to the different soils. Keep them watered - particularly in August/September when they start producing their buds for next year.

Thank you. The lace cap is about 6 years old - It was a cutting from the large, old hydrangea on the patio. Good luck with your cutting - they do grow very quickly once they take.

Such an interesting question Jagdish. Hydrangeas are tolerant of different soils so you have a big choice. I like to put azaleas and rhododendrons with hydrangeas as they are all shrubs and flower at different times so the bed has interest from Spring till well into the Summer.

Thank you for the compliment Rosa. Yes, I do leave the dahlias in the ground - but I am in zone 9a on the coast in England so I can get away with it. Cutting the stems very close to the ground once the blooms have finished at first frosts (they're hollow - don't want rain in the stems) and covering with thick layer of compost to keep them warm over Winter will help.

Are you familiar with the Vinca Vije. I found one last year and put it in a container. I wasn't very good about caring for it and I haven't trimmed it back but today I see young shoots with purple flowers shooting out. Pleasant surprise! Any tips?

I have vinca minor - we call it periwinckle - very pretty, but it does spread and can be a little invasive, so best not to have it grow in between shrubs as their roots will intertwine and you can't pull it out.

You have a brilliant wildlife garden.The spirea bridal wreath I have heard of - its a bit like a white flowered spring buddleia - is it good for pollinators? That's a nice viburnum too you have it does really looks like a hydrangea hence your video text caption. I have a Mariesii viburnum but it is still only small having only got it last year. I also have the flowering current. The clematis idea is good, montana cultivars are nice but also Clematis alpina blue dancer is one I was looking at myself online recently which is lovely for an early flowering one. The laburnum flowers are lovely, must get quite a few bees on them. The native trees, holly and viburnum opulus all in one area must be great for wildlife - particularly for woodland butterflies and birds. The infamous solomon's seal sawfly is probably one type of wildlife that maybe isn't so good in the garden though, but everything has to eat. I like the foxgloves you have, and I like verbascums too for that matter, because of the flower spikes. I thought the yellow loosestrife was a verbascum actually before you said what it was. The apples are ripening well on the apple tree; I only have a small garden so I only have a patio fruit apple tree. You have a weigela bristol ruby, I have Bristol Snowflake instead but I only got it at the end of last year, its only tiny as a result but still flowered this year which was great.

Thank you for your fantastic comment - you obviously appreciate flora and fauna. I like the spirea but I haven't seen many pollinators on it. I once saw a fabulous Mariesii viburnum - I'd quite like one, I'll check out clematis alpina blue dancer sounds nice. You're right I do get speckled wood butterflies dancing in the light and shade. That's nice your Bristol snowflake has flowered already - these weigela really perform well.

@@paultsworld Mariesii actually looks better in the shade flowering I think, that's where i have mine, although it does gets a little bit of dappled sunlight. As for woodland butterflies, you might get a purple hairstreak butterfly or even an elusive purple emperor butterfly eventually if the oak grows big enough!

That’s a good question. Yes, i could do but most people in England don’t water their lawns - partly because as soon as it rains the grass becomes green again but also there is a water meter, so all water from a hose is paid for. Even though we are famous for rain - we actually sometimes have water shortages in England.
