I have been looking forward to this task for SO LONG! Taking out the papers I so laboriously stitched over the last couple of years was great fun, part of the fun was seeing all the papers I cut from The Beans Books I used to make the templates. Before anyone wonders why I chose the potentially collectors books, please know that I only used really damaged books from the charity shop that were destined for landfill. Recycling them like this has to be a very creative reuse I'm sure you'll agree!
I have narrowed down my choice of backing fabric too and will order it soon. Then I'll decide on wadding and stitching. So there will be many more videos about this quilt!
But I am going to miss the hand stitching of the hexagons and so I feel like I might design a new quilt to take the place of this one on my design board!
EDITED TO ADD!!
I am very bad at MATHS! always have been, so when I told you the number of hexagons I don't know where I got that number from?
Here are my stats
there are 50 rows of hexies, one row has 29 and the other has 28 hexagons.
So add 28 to 29 (57) and multiply by 25 (hall of 50) and the total should be
1425
not whatever I said.
I'm really sorry folks!
I thought there were a lot more that 753!!!!!

I got the maths wrong as I so often do - I calculated that there are really 1425 hexagons (or so) and not whatever I said at the end. Well done to everyone who paused the video and counted them! wow! I thought there were a lot more! Sorry guys - never trust my maths - ever! xxx

Oh Kate! I was only joking 😂😂 I'm so pleased you get to cuddle up with moms quilt, I'd be so disappointed if I made a beautiful quilt for someone and they didn't want to use it because it's too lovely and kept it in a draw, they need to be loved on the bed 💖😊

For Agnes to have this quilt, which her Grandmother's hands have lovingly touched, is a great treasure for years to come. To think Grandmother's fingers have been over every inch. Grandmother's eyes seeing the pattern unfold, her thoughts when making the quilt; everything is a special gift.

My grandmother and great grandmother plus her sister quilted me a quilt they put away till I married I lived with my husband for 4 years before we finally tied the knot and Nan would not give me the quilt until the wedding.🤣😂🤣. I used the quilt, I didn’t let it just sit away somewhere as it had languished for about 12 years already. It’s now falling apart, beyond repairing , holes and just threadbare but it was loved and felt like a hug from these very loved and important women in my life. 🥰🙋🏼‍♀️

It truly is a treasure. My grandfather gave me a quilt my grandmother had started and all the loose patches after she passed. I was working to finish the quilt but lost everything when my home was burglarized 10 years ago. The burglar also took my hard drives and hundreds of $ worth of drawing and painting supplies... But it's loosing her quilt that still makes my heart ache.

@@jillipepper5353 that's so beautiful! I would try to sew it between a new quilt & it's backing, or make a throw pillow (or something similar) and use it as the filling just to keep the original quilt around for as long as possible. Just because it would be hard for me to let go of something made with all that love ❤️

There is a comfort about following tradition especially when beloved relatives like my mom and grandmom taught me a certain way. When you no longer have them, doing that thing they passed along to you will put a smile on your face each time. Both my mom and her mom taught me to sew early in my life, especially how to hand sew neatly. That is why I am attracted to English Paper Piecing; an excuse to use hand stitches ❤️

Kate I enjoyed this video as I do all of them, but this one in particular, tugged at my heart. I am a quilter but even if I wasn't, I would realize how special this quilt is. When a quilter gifts a bed quilt, especially one that they hand stitched, they are giving more than a collection of fabric sewn into a blanket. Every quilt has a story to tell and a piece of the maker goes with it. It is the most beautiful feeling to experience. Agnes will be enchanted to sleep and dream under the colours of her grandmother's love. From your hands to her heart. Memories never forgotten. ❤️

Hello Kate, It truly is a masterpiece. My heart went to my throat when, Sadie jumped up on the quilt, and the poignant gasp went out. I have a huge Grace 4 rod quilt frame with a King size Chicken Tracks quilt in it. I've been working on it for years. It was in the living where I had more room, and one or the other of the cats jumped up on it and clawed it so badly I had to remove one whole row right in the middle. Then I had to put it back together. I love my cats (5), but I had to put the frame in my little sewing room, that meant something had to go. The cutting table. So now the sewing room is a cat free zone.

The young people who podcast are so interested in just how much they can do, or create. Don’t get me wrong, their projects are spectacular! But there is just something so soothing and wonderful about your calm, slow manner. Just as in the two years it has taken to make Agnes’ quilt, with even more months yet to go, haste is not in your nature!! With that i can so identify. You have so many different types of projects…i mostly just knit or cross-stitch. But I’m no longer in a race, even with myself, to finish a project! Thank you for visiting in my home each time you do. I LOVE having you here!❤️❤️

I am a retired commercial artist and also showed paintings in many shows and taught for a few years at university level. I stumbled upon your channel while looking for ideas for my first ever quilt project and I'm delighted that I did. I'm 74 years of age and have enjoyed a few needle crafts over the last 20 odd years since I retired from what was a very frenetic and stressful career in advertising. I have always been a lover of quilts and have scoured the county antique stores in and around the Southern and Shenandoah Valley regions of Virginia in the USA for many years. I was particularly interested in large entirely handmade ones, preferably in feminine small-piece pastel colours. And to my absolute delight, I came across such a one in a very small town named Floyd, VA. My husband, very perceptively guessing I was going to 'cry me a river' if I didn't snap it up, paid the most ridiculous price for it. I had two totally independent people advise me that it was a very popular design in the mid-1800's so I'm pretty proud of my find. And it's all mine now, newly cleaned and lovingly admired by many visitors to my home on the Gold Coast in Qld. Australia. Anyway it kick-started my desire to have a go at quilt-making. For the last few months I've been on-line shopping for fabrics and whilst there's an absolute plethora of pretty soft pastel florals and backgrounds that I've been collecting along the way, I have to say that in stark contrast to these, I've fallen heavily for Kaffe Fassett designs along with others of his ilk. I also love Morrison designs and even some of the boutique Ozzie designers who are rising to the fore now. So, Kate, I just wanted to introduce myself and say just how much I absolutely love to watch you, and sometimes Anna too, just being your beautiful self in your colourful, cat-friendly and homely home. I'm made to feel very welcome and happy just watching you "do your particular thing" and nattering away, just like 50-odd years ago back in dear old England. Be happy and well. Love, Suzie Wastie xxx

It's wonderful to think how many hours Agnes will spend looking at each fabric pattern and choosing her favourites...such a beautiful gift. 😊 The quilt is so fluid and tranquil from a distance but such glorious, colourful chaos up close...magic! I'm terrible at maths, one of the reasons why I thought quilting could be a nightmare for me. Half way through the video I thought that quilt top was missing something...a cat. I guess the sunny garden was a priority; my money for the first arrival would have been on cat Rita. 😄 It's all fun and games until someone loses traction but that was a stellar recovery. Thanks for the video Kate, a lovely to way to spend some time. 😊🇨🇦🌸

I am so enjoying watching your deconstructing of the lovely hex's. Your commentary is great as the job at hand. I would like to say at this point of Agnes's quilt that this is the piece de resistance of all quilt tops. I now look forward to seeing the next stage. Thank you so much Kate, you fill my heart with love and joy. From Auckland New Zealand.

Oh, Kate, I wish I could have those threads for my artwork! By the way, I have finished the piecing of my English paper pieced quilt for my daughter, and have chosen the way to do the edge (I made a border of "facing octagons" and will sew them along to be the very edge of the quilt). I took out the papers as I went, but don't worry, there's no chance that any of the stitching is going to be pulled or weakened. I took your teaching seriously and was super careful and especially at any corner that met another corner! So we will be likely quilting together from our different countries. I can't thank you enough for the kind instruction you provided to all of us so we could enjoy this wonderful British skill.

What a beautiful quilt! I’m reaching out to your viewers after watching. I subscribed to you when you started this. Almost two years later, I have over 2000 hexies ready to piece together and fabric for several hundred more cut into squares. Most of the fabric was from scraps I kept after sewing hundreds of face masks to donate when the pandemic first started. For my first EPP quilt, I decided to randomly piece without a pattern in mind. I have a large piece sewn together that is equivalent to maybe a fifth of what I planned to do, also for my granddaughter. She was born shortly before I started treatment for my second round of breast cancer. Now I know I will never be able to finish it. I have severe neuropathy in my hands and feet and cannot hand stitch for very long. If there is anybody out there who would like to receive all the hexies I have ready to go, please let me know. I would much rather pay the shipping to somebody who will use it than to let it sit here, untouched, until after I’m gone. Contact me here and we can email. Thank you.

It is a really fabulous quilt, stitched with love and I'm sure it will be treasured for years. There is something satisfying about taking the papers out-- the home stretch has been reached. Agnes is a very lucky little girl.

It’s just beautiful Kate…I’m looking forward to seeing the coming videos on the finishing especially the quilting . You inspired me to start a Hexie quilt but it’s only a cot sized …It’s a eye spy themed and I can’t believe how obsessed I become hunting out appropriate fabric 😂.I’m making it for a grand baby yet to be made and born for my youngest daughter because sadly I might not be around when that happens due to major health problems. So thank you Kate for inspiring and teaching me ….I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process and I’ve left instructions for my daughter to watch your videos just encase I don’t get to finish it.💐

This quilt is simply stunning! It‘s been such a pleasure watching it come together. My perfect evening? Watching Kate working on Agnes‘s quilt while I‘m stitching together my own hexagons - knitted ones in my case - to make my own quilt. Here‘s to enjoying and celebrating our crafting! 🥂

Folding the edges back to create a straight edge is genius! I've got to remember that. I love wool batting. It's amazingly light and drapes so nicely. It's also great for cool or warm weather. Can't believe you've gotten this done. It's turned out so pretty!
