A overview of my entire carnivorous collection, this includes sundews, sarracenia and venus fly traps. I really love the sundews I think they are just so pretty with the dew! I hope this was either eye opening or educational to a whole new species of plant to collect!

Oh wow. I just got a sundew and wanted to look up care for it and I went to ur video first. Then i wanted to ask u abt lighting. Thats what is the biggest thing I need to invest in and understand. Yes, I am a scientist but I never had to worry abt this kind of stuff, it was already taken care of. Im not arrogant bc of the degree, I am ready to learn from any & everyone, young & old, degrees & no degrees. Seems like u are a jackpot of info & my new favorite channel. The videos look really cool from the titles & thumbnails. I will get to that point someday but educating myself comes first. Its a big difference doing experiments & actually knowing the nuts & bolts abt caring & understanding plants. I am a geneticist I grew plants on petri dishes & then pulled the DNA out and sought to answer questions at the molecular level. I am happy to be going back & learning all u have to share with us. Thnks. Also I may still have questions abt lights. I will see if the info is already here first.

I would like to ask you if there should be water in the trumpet or if this would be capable of rotting or destroy it or in general if it would be wrong something like that.

I have just started with carnivorous plants and grow them indoors and I have one BIG question, what about dormancy? Nepenthes I know don't need it, but I have Sarracenia ,VFT and Drosera. What do I do with them in winter? As I mentioned I grow them indoors , I have them under good lighting and in high humidity and warm temperature. I read that if some carnivorous plants don't get their dormancy they will weaken and die. How do I prevent this? Do i trim them and put them in my fridge? I don't want to put them outside because winters here in Finland will get too cold. I would really appreciate the help!

@TechplantChannel

My flytraps are the hardest to keep happy lol. They will need dormancy soon tho and i dont know of an easy way to do it. I think it gets way too cold out side so i fear they might just die
@AtraxJoe
@AtraxJoe 4 жыл бұрын
@@TechplantChannel To be honest, doing an indoor dormancy with Flytraps is one of the easiest things 😉. First you can put them outside for acclimatization till the temps at night drops min to around 7 C°. After that you take them indoors and get rid of all the leaves and the substrate, clean the roots excessively precise. Give them a brief spray with an anti mould spray for plants, just a little bit. Wrap the roots with some moist paper towel, just for keeping the roots moist, and give the paper towel itself a quick spray with the anti mold spray too. Now you can stack a lot of Dionaea in a tight Tupperware box and put it into the fridge, but of course, you've to clean the box first very very precisely. In the fridge, at around 4 C°, you can store them easily till the next spring, just double-check from time to time that the paper towels resp the roots stay moist. That's it. I'm doing this since, hm, think 18 years now..... It works excellent. Cheers. P.s. I think there are some videos about this technique on KZfaq at the meantime.

Loved this video, thank you! I had no idea sundews could be propagated by leaf cuttings. I will give that a try. I had some flowering during the summer but I wasn't sure if I was getting seeds or just debris. I scattered it all over some sphagnum anyway! :) Only occasionally do I get enthused by insectivorous plants, at least as far as keeping them goes. I've just planted up a jar terrarium with Drosera, Nepenthes and Sarracenia. Cultivars of these are something I am completely ignorant of. I like the box set-ups you have and might try that out. @TechplantChannel

I would get some kind of tropical sundew. Drosera Capensis is pretty good. If you get one its a lot easier if it gets good consistent light all year long from some kind of electric light source (unless you live really close to the equator) then keep its pot in a bowl of DISTILLED water. as for feeding lots of people make a gallon jug of maxsea fertilizer and you just put a drop or two on the leaves, be careful not to put fertilizer in the substrate. too much and your plant is toast. I mean if it catches lots of flys thats good enough too.

What did you put them in? I started some capensis seeds from one of my plants and i just sprinkled them onto some peatmoss and soaked it all with distilled water and put a humidity dome over them and they all sprouted. Im not sure how long other species take. ALSO depending on your species some seeds need to sit in the refrigerator for like 3 months. Its called like stratification. most north american species need to go through it to simulate winter.

@@TechplantChannel Here's all ya need to know ( i have a bunch of them): 1) Water. Only use distilled or rain water, but Aquafina or any other water undre 20 ppm should be fine. 2) Soil. Either use only peat/perlite, or just use pure preserved spaghmum. Don't let the freeze, or get too hot (room temp is fine). That's pretty much it. I'm pretty sure Carnivorous Plant Resource has some nice info.

If anyone can identify the small insect that crawls over the media that is seen between 3 and 4 o’clock at time 3:04-3:10? I believe it to be a mite but if anyone knows what kind that’d be cool. I’ve had my own curiosity in my plant’s soil (potted Swiss chard, indoors). My plants grow very well but I see lil guys on the surface of their soil 🧐

if you want to prevent them from going through dormancy periods then yes, because the natural sun cycle will send them into it. Plus with grow lights you can make sure they get enough light to produce the nice red colorations
