Absolutely fascinating to me that a newspaper came with a free DVD, lol. Especially in the ‘90s when they were more expensive. Very cool to see! Thanks for sharing, Neil!

Thanks, Branden. Yes, it was quite a regular thing back then, most of the British newspapers did it. Sometimes I ended up buying more than one newspaper on the same day as they both had DVDs in them. The 16 war movies that I showed, I actually picked those up locally a couple of years ago from an expat who was getting rid of them. Have a good weekend

Hi Neil, I really have enjoyed seeing your movies! You got really good titles from the newspapers too.The ones I have that you showed are the Marilyn Monroe ones, Intermezzo, Peyton Place, The Go-Between is on VHS, and Of Human Bondage. You don't get much time to watch movies lately, since showing your collection. I remember seeing The Day The Earth Stood Still years ago and would like to see it again. I will have to keep an eye out for it. Thank you very much for taking so much time and effort to show these videos. But it has been enjoyable! Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks very much, Lita. I appreciate you have seen a fair few of these before as you have watched my haul videos so thanks again for watching. I have still been watching movies (and buying more!) so hope to do more videos after I’ve finished this series that will be a bit more talky. Enjoy your weekend too

Hi Neil, cool Laurel and Hardy shirts set, I wish the big big dvd set that got released would make it's way to Blu-ray. Denzel is a brilliant actor, always put in a solid performance. Her Alibi is so much fun, I've not seen the Goodbye Girl remake but the original I can recite as I've seen it so often.... Forget Paris is also a top comedy. I've not delved to far into Marilyn Monroe's career, I've obviously seen her movies but nowhere near all of them😮 I remember when they did the free DVD's for free in newspapers... (Happy times) they put out some excellent titles and a few very obscure films too, nice one mate, take care👍😀👍

Hi Alan. Sounds like Goodbye Girl may have been almost as popular as Tootsie in your household, that’s impressive that you can recite it….Yes, getting the DVDs inside the newspapers was great. I miss getting the Sunday newspaper with all their art and culture supplements and magazines, you could spend all week reading them

Awesome mate.👍🤩👌 Nearly there it’s been an awesome ride lol. Awesome collection there of the freebie ones from the paper.

Thanks, Deon for hanging on for the ride. Hopefully it has given a few thrills without making you want to throw up 🤮 It used to be great getting some of the Sunday papers , you could spend all week reading all the supplements and magazines. The difficulty was often wanting to get more than one paper as they were all offering the DVDs

Hi Mark. Yes, it used to be great to buy a Sunday paper (or two), not only for the dvd but also because they had great supplements such as art and culture magazines. You could spend all week reading them….I have a regular dvd of Flight of the Navigator (and that’s one I saw at the cinema) but never saw it offered in a newspaper. Cool you have it

Hello Neil. Decalogue is incredible. I have the arrow academy bluray set. I have a big stack of those freebies from the papers including most of the carry on films.

Thanks, Roy. I imagine that’s a nice set, I know Criterion also put out a great blu ray….It was great when the newspapers used to give out the DVDs. I miss the days of getting (at least) one of the big Sunday newspapers with all the supplements. You could spend a week reading those

Guillerman Is Back! Which newspapers would include these movies? It's an interesting subcategory I know nothing about....
@neilsmoviechannel319914 күн бұрын
Hi. Yes, pretty much all the British newspapers did this back in the 90s, they would just slip a free dvd copy into the Sunday edition or sometimes a weekday edition. If you look again at the video you’ll see most of the newspaper names referenced on the covers eg The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Mail, The Sun etc. I used to love poring over the Sunday papers with all their various art and culture supplements and magazines. Now I just scroll through headlines in a newsfeed

Thanks, Stuart. Yes, have quite a few good TV shows to show everyone. I tend to pick those up if I find them very cheaply. Getting around to watching them all is another matter! Have a good weekend. Your channel is doing really well, good job mate

The Marilyn Monroe hat is very nice. I just didn’t care for the way you have to slip in and out the DVDs. Because that’s easily a way to scratch those DVDs . I have all of her Headlining movies on Blu-ray and a couple that she only had small parts in on DVD
@neilsmoviechannel319913 күн бұрын
Hi. Yes, the downside with the magazine style set is that it’s easy for the DVDs to fall out if you’re not careful
@movieedge737014 күн бұрын
Don’t know if you have it, but the Laurel Hardy essentials is pretty much as complete a set with their talkies from shorts to movies from Hal roach it’s just missing three movies to Warner Brothers owns that was hal roach/Mgm produced and their public domain movie, which was hal roach MGM again March of wooden soldiers or otherwise known as babes in toyland
@neilsmoviechannel319913 күн бұрын
Hi Mike. No, I don’t have that set. My brother in law used to have just about every Laurel and Hardy movie on vhs, he was a huge fan
@movieedge737014 күн бұрын
All those movies you got free in the newspaper were they a deal to promote the movie label or were on or just to promote movies in general . I know we had boxes of cereal here that did a deal with Columbia/Sony to put children’s movies free on a box of cereal.

Hi. Really it was a marketing tool to help newspaper sales. Most of the British newspapers got involved and all types of movies from different studios were released. You’ll see the newspaper name printed onto the cover of each dvd. It was a great period, often at weekends I’d end up buying more than one newspaper because they each had something different. Even without the dvd though the Sunday paper was always a good read as it came with lots of supplements, a magazine/art and culture news etc
