Project MMO continues as we step into our first Destiny 2 raid - the Vault of Glass. We went in completely blind, not properly geared, no proper builds, no foreknowledge - it was tough but we had so much fun taking it down. Let us know what you thought of the raid, and should we be afraid when we step into Last Wish?

I think the Trash Problem that you point out doesn't really register in most D2 player minds because even the jumping puzzles and transitions are treated as encounters most of the time, where you can actually get loot or at the very least get the bonus chests or other triumphs and collectibles.

Raids in destiny always are meant to be locations and the inbetween zones let you relax, explore for secret chests and collectibles, and laugh during parkour. I think it adds values to the raids, especially with how fast you can blaze through them(30 seconds between many encounters).

Also keep in mind the scale and how tough these bosses are. FF14 savage raids are meant to be killed in like 50 minutes, back to back. Having filler would become really tedious, I feel. Destiny encounters are relatively short and easy, allowing more time to socialize and relax. It's the place for a squad of 6 to go in, goof around, get some sweet loot.

I definitely agree, especially in the later raids where the intermission sections get more interesting. Vault of Glass, partially due to its nature as the "first" Destiny raid, has a lot of relatively bland Vex tunnels to crawl through. It's cool, but nowhere near as interesting as the landscapes in something like Vow of the Disciple or Root of Nightmares.

As a long time destiny player, it's very fun and refreshing to see an outside perspective. Most of the community is "in the know" and seeing other MMO perspectives is awesome! If you are planning on doing another d2 raid, id highly recommend "Kings Fall". It's another d1 remake, but it is one of my favorites by far. The mechanics are more complex than vault and it likely will require a tune up in the team's load outs, but it's very worth it. Can't wait to see more!
@TheHistoryWaffle

The in between serve as platforming/Jumping puzzles most of the time. Something you have to understand with Destiny raids is that it is essentially a story mission inn a sense. The raid is trying to tell a story and get you to feel as if you are embarking on a mission. Diving deeper into the vault of glass and finding your way is part of that story. We have had these since 2014 and they're never leaving lol. They can get annoying eventually but serve the purpose of showing your traversal through the raid and gives you this feeling of discovery and searching.

The raids and dungeons in D2 are absolutely amazing. I did VoG back in D1, and they did such a good job translating it into D2. King’s Fall is one of my favorite raids, and I hope you enjoy it. It was a lot cooler in D1 because it perfectly tied up the campaign for The Taken King, but mechanically it is great. After I quit WoW I hopped over to D2 in Beyond Light after being gone since Warmind(I played the campaign of Shadowkeep but that doesn’t count rly) and it’s the game I devote my daily gameplay to. The gunplay and builds bring so much to the experience for me, and it is so enjoyable to me that I enjoy hopping into strikes and doing them over and over again. There’s always something to grind, and when I have my sights set on it I won’t stop. I’ve almost got 1k hours into the game, and it’s fun to be able to go hard for a few weeks then take a week off and play single player games just to get back to grinding.

Man Put into perspective As someone with 9 years into the series how that sense of Discovery feels doing your first raid. On the surface Almost everything in destiny holds your hand is some form or fashion. But a raid you just drop in and get to figuring it out. Once you get it down it there are simple concepts but figuring it out is just a great feeling. I just don't have that feeling so much anymore when you've played that game so much you just know what to expect to a certain degree. Watching you fight templar really reminded myself of how it was back in 2014 for me. Now these days I just get my team and we kill him in 10 seconds. To have that sense of fun and discovery I do hope I find again. Really put well together video, Hit the nail right on the head. day to day stuff in destiny is not something you really want to do, But the stuff that leads you into what this game can become in raids in dungeons is so good.

I love that you enjoyed the raid! It’s great having everyone involved and having to do something, there’s no room for passengers. Something you’ll learn about destiny raids is that the breaks in between encounters do get better but they are also there for secrets and triumph completions. If I remember correctly(it was nearly 10 years ago) there was a challenge back in D1 to kill all the gorgons in the maze. They are super beefy and with each one killed it buffs the remaining ones. It’s things like that in those areas that I love because if you don’t want to engage with it you can just move on past it. Or you can take the time to do something a bit different and get something for it.

Even with people in voice it was rough. I remember folks that chose being Hunters dying prolifically because they didn’t have access to the void defensive abilities of the Titans or the resurrection abilities of the Warlock. (Edit: Hunter was very popular in my circle) My biggest regret was skipping out on gjallahorn from the very first Xur weekend and getting the Helmet of Saint 14 instead. Finding someone with gjallahorn just to do enough dps for the final boss was a must and caused many of us to sit and wait for hours…

I have to say that seeing you take on this challenge and come away so enthused has filled me with delight. Even though Vault of Glass is the oldest of the Destiny raids and the most outdated in terms of its design, it still has a sense of magic to it and it's so good to see that come through for you. I would love to see you try out some of the other raids - in my opinion, they get better and better as they go along. Really cant wait to see yalls next raid! I get why you wouldnt like the "in between" sections of raid, but i feel like they do end up adding to the overall raid, even if some of the segments arent super engaging or interesting after running it 20+ times. The first few times through em though, theyre really exciting since you never know if theres a secret chest or lore colletible or puzzle that unlocks something hidden somewhere, or some incredible sights that you cant get anywhere else in the game. so theyre really fun to explore and experience those first few runs. After that though, its a good down time between encounters to bet your friends that they cant make the jumping puzzle in one try as you try to grief them. Some of them drag on a little too long imo (especially in the latest dungeon), but for the most part i would rather have them than not have them

The "day to day play" that you describe isn't actually the day to day play, that's the blueberry (new players, in blue gear) stuff to just go out and grind materials and things to setup your account. As a new player you need an obscene amount of legendary shards and glimmer to unlock class fragments and aspects, and build some sort of an arsenal to get into end game content. The day to day experience for someone who has already unlocked all of that, has every exotic weapon and armour for their class as well as a vault full of weapons is raids, dungeons, Grand Master level nightfalls and seasonal content. As a high level player you will rarely if ever find yourself wondering around patrol zones doing public events, patrols and all that busy work.

Hey Mike, big fan since late Cata. I actually played Destiny 1 since its late beta stages and to answer your question about how raids, a social aspect of a game, were actually formed. When I played it, I actually had a ton of (at the time I was a xbox console boy) friends I met doing strikes (dungeons) and some were good enough that I befriended them and continued to play with them for PvP matches and higher level dungeons. But for raiding, your best bet to find people to do Vault of Glass, which was the first raid of Destiny 1, was to sit in the main hub area. You'd get a lot of personal messages through Xbox message system asking if you wanted to raid VoG, and some asked if you wanted to help a learning team beat VoG (cause you had cosmetics to show you beat the raid). I would say that launch Destiny was a lot like 2004 Release WoW, where you would venture through your MSQ and did the odd strike with randos that became your friends, and you would in turn invite those friends to clear the daunting raid. It was also the time were a lot of things were being figured out by the player themselves instead of guides or walkthroughs of Destiny (until later on in its lifecycle ofc). Hopefully this gave some insight about Destiny one pre discord era.

Pretty cool video its very different to see the pov of someone who has experience in mmo playing this game because honestly u got the understanding pretty well, literally the only thing your missing is better weapons, better loot, coordinated dpsing ,buffing all that stuff but very interesting to watch and see, I will be honest some parts of destiny are just u slugging it out so u can do what u want to do later but u become more experienced and learn that things like public events, patrols which are a small part of the game that seem important are pretty much worthless. its really just carried by the sandbox, dungeons and raids.

As a long-time Destiny player who has never played other MMOs (since I was a shooter fan first), it's interesting to hear your characterization of the "Trash Problem." Destiny's raids having interstitial traversal sections is such a fundamental part of the Destiny raiding experience to me. They provide a breather between encounters, a chance for everyone to catch their breath, socialize a bit, compare loot, etc. But more importantly, they play into something that sets Destiny, as an FPS, apart from other MMOs. IMO, a huge part of Destiny's unique fun factor is your fluid mobility - that unique combination of Bungie's top-shelf FPS control "feel" and the borderline absurd in-air height and distance you can travel using each class's unique jump mechanics. The jumping puzzles are a chance to play around with the mobility sandbox in the same way that the encounters test your gunplay, puzzle solving, and team communication skills. I wonder if your view of the traversal sections will change over time. Bungie does ramp up the complexity of the jumping puzzles in later raids, but more importantly, they dramatically increase the eye candy factor. As you know, Vault of Glass was the first Destiny raid, and suffers visually from the fact that it was built to work on PS3s. On top of that, Bungie leaned hard into the "dark mysterious ruin" aesthetic of this raid, whereas later raids featured more of the spectacular vistas and skyboxes that Bungie's art design is better known for. Your first time through the later raids, these jumping puzzles become more than just filler - they're a core part of the raid's visual storytelling and help give the raid a feeling of exploring a real place rather than just moving from one video game level to the next. Regardless of whether you do or do not end up coming to enjoy the traversal sections, looking forward to seeing more! Thanks for giving D2 a chance, those of us who love the game are all-too-familiar with it being something of the red-headed stepchild of modern video gaming, and we're always happy to welcome new Guardians to the world.

Jumping puzzles in Destiny have been a mainstay since Destiny 1, Vault of Glass being the first raid in D1, I believe was the first jumping puzzle. Yes they can be annoying, but they also teach you how to use your jumps. The jumping puzzles in Destiny 2 have always been fun to me, not so much for my other half, but I have loved all of them.
