Hello, this is the 9th video in my series documenting my experience with Corneal Cross Linking and getting a Scleral Lens. I will also talk about the future of this channel in this video.
As always, I’m not a medical doctor, and I know every case will be different from mine. These videos are just to give a prospective towards what I went through in hopes to help anyone that might also be facing this same life obstacle.

Thanks again for your videos man. I just had the cross linking (Epi-On) yesterday. Literally the entire procedure was just keeping my eye open for an hour while the medical assistance did a series of eye drops (Vitamin B-12 (Riboflavin) every 2 minutes, numbing drops every 5 Minutes, and antibiotics every 10 minutes). At the 30 minute mark the doctor came in to put the UV light over me as I starred into it, the drops continued until the hour was up and then I got up and went home. The last eye drop was a numbing eye drop for the pain. I got home and still felt no pain but once it hit, it really hit. I remember you saying it was like having really spicy hot sauce dropped into your eye and the pain not going away all night and that's exactly what it's like. Even with the ice and codeine and Tylenol 3 pills they give you it's very painful. Woke up with a slight stinging sensation but nothing serious and I can easily keep both eyes open now. As I'm typing this I'm extremely happy that I got this procedure done to retain my vision and am looking forward to the Scalar lens.

You're gonna dig the scleral lens. I know my doctor took her time making sure the lens really fit. Once she was really happy with the fit on my eye, I hardly realize it's there most of the time. Occasionally it gets dry if it is really dry, or windy outside, but nothing a re-wetting drop doesn't fix. Glad to hear you are recovering well and good luck!

I thank you again for this series! I was initially afraid at the pain you suffered after the procedure as I have been given no prescription for pain meds, but the ice pack suggestion along with the tissues and tylenol help, along with the assurance that the first night is the worst. Getting my couch and my bedroom equipped with comforts, and looking forward to hopefully better eyesight in the days to come (after a few months, apparently). I was very excited about how thrilled you seem with your improved vision after the procedure and new lenses. Wish me luck!!

Good luck! If your doctor is willing to give you numbing drops I have heard from some others that have gone through this that it does help to keep applying the numbing the first day. Otherwise, the ice/cold packs, and try to sleep as much as you can to get through it. I hope all goes well for you!

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I was extremely nervous prior to my own procedures, but your perspective helped ease my mind. I had CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) and CXL (Cross Linking) done in both eyes about 3 weeks ago. I'll get fitted for sclerals soon and I'm hoping that we can get them dialed in quickly so that I can return to work. (My vision had gotten so bad before the procedures that it was impossible for me to work.) You're absolutely right that having them both done at the same time is rough. I have relied heavily on my wife for assistance. I am also very fortunate in that my job offers a solid medical leave/ short term disability plan. Quick advice for anyone with CXL in their future: invest in some good audio books.

Tnx for your info in this series. I'm getting my cross-linking in my right eye on april 29th 2019. I now sort of know what to expect. I'm a little less nervous now. Will prepare some cooling pads! I have the same small scleral lens you have. My doctor said I can not wear my lens for 3 months after the cros link procedure. That kinda sucks but yeah, it has to heal properly. After the three months I get a new scleral fitting and we go from there.

@@bionic_band_director We have been watching with some horror, the current American administrations neglect towards the health crisis, which has caused us deep concern as we have been to America many times and this shakes world cofidence in the office of US President. Some re-establishment will be necessary. We are in Aberdeen, Scotland and the health service here is fully / 100% government tax funded. My nephew had the kerataconus cross linking procedure last monday and has been back twice since then for checkups. There is no money or insurance involved. You just turn up. Plenty of research has been done both in the USA and around the world that shows that fully tax funded health changes life outcomes allowing people to thrive without undue financial pressures. We have a strong culture here in Scotland of protecting and cherishing our 100% fully tax funded National Health Service. I wish this for America too. It's so much better than the "scam" / profiteering system of insurances USA has. Your 9 or so videos gave us a very good insight into what my nephew experienced with the cross linking proceedure. For these we are grateful. Thank you. We hope your eye health is holding up and were very happy to hear the scleral lens is a big sucess. tc and thank you :)

I've been going around with this "fog" for the past 10 years.. I've been to multiple doctors and optician to see if they could help me see clearer, and of course remove the fog.. Now i have a new appointment in january, and i really hope the doctor this time will give me the chance to get Cross linking for my right eye, as its REALLY horrible at this point.. I start to worry if something bad will happen if i drive one day. I don't have a car, but i borrow my dads when he is on vacation and park it outside where i live, but if this get worse, i will not, with good conscience drive. It's never about me, its about everyone else in the traffic, i cannot stand the thought of hurting anyone. Thanks for your videos, @wwwoody4, i has made me prepare for the operation if i get it next year. I really hope the doctor takes me serious this time.

I hope that a procedure like this could help. It sounds like your vision is pretty bad, have they talked about a cornea transplant to you? I was told that if I didn't get the Cross Linking that eventually I'd need the cornea transplant. I wonder if your vision is too far gone for the X-link... If your doctor thinks it is, you could always seek a second opinion. I don't know how close you are to Kansas City, but Dr. Wongs was amazing in helping me, heck the whole team of doctors at Grin Eye Care were great to work with.

Thank you so much! I went to the eye doctor this past Monday and was told I have Keratoconus in both eyes, the left being the worst. The major thing I was worried about was the cost. I don't have much saved and working at a school I don't make much either. Although I have health insurance I don't have eye care coverage. But as far as being on the fence, I'm no longer on it. I will get this procedure done, eventually.

Talk with your doctor about the health insurance options. I was able to use my normal health insurance to cover it as it was considered medically necessary. I completely understand the issues related to cost, as even with insurance it took me a bit to pay it off. Good luck to you, and I hope all goes well.
@A42yearoldARAB

I had this same issue, and didn't catch it on time because the first doctor didn't explain it well enough for me. It is actually considered a health issue! I still had to pay my deductible for the year which of course was maxed out because the surgery was like 8-9k for both eyes, but it was a huge discount and I would have done it years ago had I known it was considered a health issue.

Hey Woody, nice vid again, nice to hear that you're enjoying your new life experience :) I've also had the same procedure as you know 2 1/2 month ago, since then, my right eye vision has improved a lot. I'm still wearing glasses and on my right eye I've had thicker glasses then on the left and now I needed to change it because my vision improved so much, for me it's unbelievable :) Soon i will have an appointment to adjust new sceral lenses, still afraid because I wore them before and I hated it, very uncomfortable and hurts like hell, hopefully it will change a bit. Did you talk to your Doctor about laser eye surgery after CXL?
@bionic_band_director

I haven't had the chance to talk about the laser eye surgery just yet, but I will likely go see him next year and I will ask that then. I can say too, I have not had any issues with the scleral lens, its quite comfortable and most times I forget it's there. I'm guessing there have been some sort of changes to them over the years, and hopefully they will be as comfortable for you as it is for me.

I gave serious thought about doing CXL, but since my KC stopped progressing and i'm in my 40s, the eye specialist didn't see a benefit of doing it.. Not sure if I should get a second opinion, but appreciated they didn't push the expensive procedure onto me. I am grateful that it's not progressing so far however.. I supposed i should of did CXL years ago so my vision wouldn't be so bad today however, but CXL was only offered here recently. Some states seem to be slow to offer this procedure..

Yeah, I went to three different doctors as the first wanted an astrological amount, the second was better, and the third worked with insurance. Raven McClaw I went in two different times and when they did my fitting, they had be try on several different fitting lenses to check for the fit. They had two doctors check that it was a quality fit, When I came back a few weeks later, they double checked that it was the right fit. Once the actual prescription lens arrived they had me wear it and then rechecked again. They made one adjustment to the strength and now it’s golden. If you are not happy, I’d talk to your doctor. Hey dude, thanks for sharing your experience. I just found out from my eye doctor that I have this eye condition in both my eyes & he recommended cross linking in both eyes. Would u advise for me to have the procedure done in both eyes @ the same time? & as far as shopping around for cheaper doctors, my doctor told me that insurance doesn’t cover it & it’s gonna cost me $5500 out of pocket. How do u advise me on this? Thanks.
@bionic_band_director
@bionic_band_director 5 жыл бұрын
I only paid $2500 for one eye, and my doctor (in Kansas City, KS) works with insurance FIRST. Defiantly worth shopping around. My first eye doctor wanted $7500 and wouldn't consider looking at insurance. As far as both at the same time, I don't know how I would have functioned with both eyes compromised during the recovery process. It takes a few months for the eyes to "settle" so I would opt for one, wait a few months, then the second. I know some have both done at the same time, but I guess it depends on the severity of your current eye degradation.

I'm a believer in the Scleral Lens, but are you sure the cross-linking procedure truly helped? I've read somewhere that if you're over age 35 it doesn't do much as the cornea is already hardened / stiffenned as we age.
@bionic_band_director
@bionic_band_director 3 жыл бұрын
You know, that's a good question. For me, my topography imagery of my cornea before the procedure and after did improve, less hills and valley. However, it only stops the progression of the disease. I was told if I didn't have the procedure my eye would continue to deteriorate and that I'd need a corneal transplant. My eye was bad, and getting worse. It's been almost three years sense and I've not noticed the eye getting worse. Now, it is still almost as blurry as it was before the procedure, but that is to be expected. However, it hasn't gotten worse. The scleral is the best thing ever!

Thanks for the comment. I am a weeeeeee bit older than 15... So, I would say you would need to talk to your folks and your doctors. I will say from what I know, I have been told that once you have the procedure, your eye "freezes" at the eye quality you currently have. Meaning that if you catch it early enough, perhaps you can salvage decent eye sight. However, my doctor did not want to do the procedure on my good eye that still currently sees at 20/20. Really, every case is going to be a bit different, and I would say trust your eye doctors opinion on what you should do moving forward. If your eyes are still good enough to see now, perhaps you can wait. Again, I don't really know what conditions your eyes are in at the moment, so I wish I could tell you more.
