In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.
Throughout my journey, I'm raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. In the late 1990s my sister visited Alcatraz and met former Alcatraz inmate Leon Whitey Thompson. She spoke with him, took his photo and got a signed copy of his book. In his latter days Leon became a motorcyclist.

Alcatraz is definitely one of the highlights in San Francisco. It's said, the prisoners could hear the sounds of San Francisco. Can you imagine being imprisoned there and hearing that? SF is a pretty amazing city. The seafood on the Wharf was pretty awesome, from what I remember.

Have you ever seen the birdman of alcatraz ? Robert stroud is played by Burt Lancaster It's one of the greatest prison movies ever made.

Glad you got to visit San Fran. You were so lucky to cross that bridge with little traffic. Every time I have crossed it there was bumper to bumper. I kept thinking of those movies were the bridge collapsed..

I've been on the tour 4 or 5 times over the years. It's one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in San Francisco. Hope you are enjoying your tour in California. Hope you visit Yosemite National Park. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

I went through Alcatraz in 1984, never been back. We were on our way to the Philippines Clark AB RP for my first USAF assignment. I was on active duty from 1984 to 2012. I have a 2023 Yamaha Super Tenere 1200cc ADV motorcycle.

I went in 1993. Tape based Sony Walkman's as the audio tour! I seem to remember I could spend five minutes in solitary confinement. A very long five minutes. Not like Robben Island though. That used actual former inmates to do the tour.

My father used to go out to Alcatraz when it was still a prison to talk with some inmates for law enforcement business, he tried to get me to go with him he knew some of the families that lived there and I could meet and play with some of the kids but I didn’t know how to swim and was afraid to climb down the ladder to the prison boat so I said no way.
