Note: I paid a total of $305.49 to ride in Premium class each way + parking at the Miami station ($7). Base prices for Smart start at $79 and for Premium start at $149. However, booking close to departure can show higher prices. I’ve seen $200+ for premium on same day. Brightline does offer a deal for families of 4 which gives them 25% off their booking in Smart class only.

My biggest issue with Brightline is you can get a round trip econ flight from Miami to Orlando for $188 vs $158 for Brightline or $378 vs $305 for first class for a third of the time. Granted you probably have to get to the airport a bit earlier, but I feel for the time savings Brightline has to be more competitive.

This is the future of the U.S! We need high-speed trains that go between locations that are too far of a drive and too close to fly. I would even argue that longer routes would definitely be a better option to flying in some cases.

118mbit wifi download on a train, wow that’s impressive, the new starlink connection has really made a difference, wish our national rail operator here in Denmark would also implement it on their trains. In fact, I just mailed them, the swedish national operator, and Amtrak about it, and sent along Brightline’s press release, in which I read that they’re the first, and only, rail operator in the world to use this technology, what a game changer, for planes eventually too. Still nothing compared to fiber, which I have at home, but for people who will never get fiber, and haven’t gotten fiber yet, this technology is incredible.

Great report. So I read about the things you experienced on your trip: there was a cab signal failure that kept the speed of your particular train to 79 mph on the 125 stretch. Luckily it only affected that one run as you saw on your return trip. Also, I learned that the speed is being held to 90 mph on the FEC 110 mph segments for some trial period before the FRA signs off on 110 mph operation.

Makes sense, there’s also fewer round trips a day for a month or so, before the full total of 16 daily round trips enter service, really should be 40 round trips a day with 10 cars on each train, but gotta start somewhere.

Thank you for including the speed so frequently on along the way between Miami and Orlando. I didn't know before this that Miami to West Palm Beach was restricted to just 79 mph. I thought all the at-grade sections were to be upgraded to 110 mph. I never heard the Diesel in the premium coach on the way to Orlando and the train never went over 79 mph. On another video when going 125 mph in the premium coach the Diesel noise was annoyingly present and the creak and rattles of the Venture coaches where making themselves known. It maybe the lead Diesel is not used at full throttle unless needed for high speed to keep noise down in the premium coach. The double level Amtrak Superliner II cars are rated to 125 mph and are much more comfortable and quieter than the Venture coaches.

Great video !! Englishman here. 2 things that surprised me. 1) Security? What? It's a train? & 2) 79mph is very slow. Is there any chance they will up-rate the infrastructure to allow faster rolling stock in the future? UK mainline speed is 125mph and by European standards as you probably know, that's considered slow. UK highspeed rail does 225mph. I presume this is because brightline uses freight standard track or?
@ncard00

Security is cause it’s the US, and they don’t want people bringing their guns and stuff onboard. And as mentioned in the video, the speeds reach both 110 and 125mph, but this train didn’t for some reason, but did on the way back. It’s cause of the many crossings that the train can’t go any faster, but it’s still faster than cars stuck in traffic, and all about the experience.
@JoelFrancoVlogs

I really wish they would electrify this corridor. Also, I do think if they want to keep the frequency up they're going to have to make their own right away without as many crossings as there are right now. I also really really really hope they extend sunrail to the airport. So then the transfer between Amtrak and Orlando and brightline is as seamless as possible.

Why? doesn’t that sound extremely expensive and something that will slow the entire project down? when in reality we just need the tracks to be built and a steady stream of passengers actually using this service. Electric wires are going to be a problem, since this is Florida and a hurricane will hit it eventually. So where do you spend your money to maximize the functionality of the rail? That’s precisely the reason a private company is better than the government for a project like this.
@tomoconnell2320
@tomoconnell2320 8 ай бұрын
They don’t own the track, it’s under FEC control, and also the long distance and few stops make it less appealing to electrify. If they add 5 more stops and also expand to Tampa, then you might see some type of electrification talk because of the number of speed up/slow downs from stopping

The segment along 528 is single-track, and protected by a custom block control system with an intricate (and slightly brittle) handshake upon entry. Our train failed the handshake, and was limited to 79mph along the segment as a result. 😞 We were allowed to go faster (89mph) along the north-south FEC mainline tracks shared with freight trains because they're double-tracked.

When someone kills themselves by jumping in front of a train, don't pity the person who killed themself, pity the poor traumatized engineer who's going to have nightmares for the rest of his life from something he'll never be able to un-see.

Americans want to mimic Europe so bad when it comes to high speed train travel but clearly Amtrak is a perfect example of what happens when we try to nationalize anything.... the key to bringing high speed rail to the US is through privatization. I can truly see this expanding to other cities as time goes on. Maybe even new companies popping up to compete with Brightline. For once, I actually have hope in the future of this country lol.

That's pretty slow for a high speed train. I was in China, and there high speed trains go over 300 kph and much quieter.

This looks like a uniquely American train experience, partly because how closely it feels like an airline experience: baggage drop off, security checks, security announcements, etc. Brightline stations have an airport feel about them, and not just the one that's within an actual airport terminal. Will it convince Floridians to ride it? I've no idea, time will tell.

I got on "Slow Orange" in Fort Lauderdale on Friday afternoon. I don't recall hearing any announcement in coach 3, but the disappointment along 528 was palpable. You could see a bunch of guys getting all excited, with their phones ready to capture the expected cheer when we broke 100, 110, 120, and 125. Except... it never happened. After going under 528, you could hear people saying, "well, maybe we have to be west of 95". We went through the tunnel under 95, and... still 79mph. As we approached 520, there was some hope that maybe *that* was going to be the magic moment it happened. Nope. By the time we went over the curved flyover around the exit a few miles east of the airport, the cold reality and disappointment sank in... 125mph wasn't going to happen. Then, there was the near-catastrophe at the station when they couldn't get the doors at the top of the platform's escalator unlocked, and people heading up the escalator (from the fully-sold-out train) were literally 4-8 seconds away from falling backwards into the people behind them because they couldn't get off at the top. The ride home was a huge disappointment. After bending over backwards to make sure my seats were forward-facing, and getting an agent at the station to double check and reassure me... we pulled out of the station backwards anyway, and I spent the next three hours in hell. So far, Brightline has refused to even acknowledge my email complaining, let alone apologize or offer anything to make up for ruining my return trip. Before last weekend, I was planning another trip to Orlando on Brightline in a couple of weeks. Now, I'm not so sure. Brightline's general customer service attitude right now seems to be, "tell it to the hand, we don't care". I've spent *years* evangelizing for the Church of Brightline, and at the moment I'm feeling kind of like Leah Remini after she became disillusioned with Scientology. Brightline also has a bunch of REALLY vicious policies: * The $10 fee they charge if your carry-on weighs more than 40 pounds. Seriously?!? There are AIRLINES with a more generous weight limit. We're talking about a TRAIN that weighs hundreds of tons. This fee is pure shameless profiteering, and I *guarantee* it's going to cost them more in lost future repeat business than they'll ever collect in one-time fees from it. They'll hit someone who has a 42-pound bag with the fee like a lightning bolt from Zeus, and that person will NEVER take Brightline again. If your bag meets their dimensional limits, and you're able to carry it and lift it over your head without assistance, it shouldn't matter to them whether it's filled with air or concrete. * The VIOLENTLY expensive, coyly-alluded-to penalty they hit you with if you miss your train. They cheerfully say that if you miss your train, they'll "rebook you on the next train" and "credit your original fare", without coming out and saying, "if you miss the train, we'll charge you the most expensive last-minute walk-up price (like $249), then sneer as we credit the $79 you originally paid, ultimately doubling or tripling your fare". To see just how bad it is, book a trip on Brightline, then right before you enter the station, go into the app and check to see how much it'll cost to take the next train instead. THAT'S how much they'll rape you for if you miss the train. If you have to leave your house 2 hours before departure to avoid missing your train, getting raped, and having your vacation completely ruined before it even begins... a huge part of Brightline's value proposition goes up in smoke, because your 3 to 3-1/2 hour trip has now turned into a 5 to 5-1/2 hour trip... with all the stress of knowing that even if you safely make it to departure, you're still just one rental-car-return-gone-badly away from getting savagely beaten-up TWICE (first, by the rental car company... then Brightline, if you miss your train because of it).

@@ncard00As someone that lives in one of the small towns that Amtrak services, let me make it clear that no one can use it. The train stops once a day at 2:30 in the morning. You think it’s like the Postal Service, carrying mail to the small towns that need it. That’s what Amtrak doesn’t tell you. I have never met anyone in my town that has taken the train.

It's weird to hear people getting excited about a train that is taken for granted in the rest of the modern world. It's even been fazed out in some countries because it's so old. The UK had these trains in 1975 and stopped using them in 2017, almost 50 years ago.
