In honor of Veterans Day, we pay homage to my Air Force background by taking a look back on some of my favorite air combat games for the Commodore 64, and to keep it interesting we’ve sprinkled in a bit of Military History here and there for good measure.

So these are some of my favorites, which ones did I miss that you would have put on the list? Let me know in the comments below.

Tony, I too learnt programming on the Commodore 64. Together with my subsequent learning of SQL at University, those two skills combined set me up for a career in IT. Those old TV ad's promoting the C64 as an educational powerhouse rather than simply just a games machine (like the Atari 2600, Intellivision, etc), really were true.

Tony, a great compilation. And on a serious note ... thank you for your service.

Amazing that a game like F-15 Strike Eagle which had literally triangles for graphics did so well commercially. It really is a testament to its gameplay. There was nothing like trying to nurse your badly wounded fighter back to the carrier (hilarious to find out that it could never really do that) before completely having to ditch. Ironically, the sequels to this game were just not as good. The improved graphics made it less fun to play, ironically... there was nothing left to the imagination anymore. I'm glad I found this channel... I've been learning something new with each video.

Jet was my favorite. You could fly either an F-16 for land-based missions, or an F/A-18 for carrier-based missions.

Very cool stuff. I had no idea old flight sims could even get this involved

Right? Especially given the platform and computing power of the time. You actually have to give it to the developers that they were able to pull off what they did.

especially 8 bit ones, only thing they lack is speed

IMHO.... F16 Combat Fighter is very immersive, definitely not the normal arcade shoot-em-up with amazing level of detail for the time.

Ha...Mach 13. The F-15 Strike Eagle is an amazing fighter jet that's capable of reaching incredible speeds....like Mach 2.4 unarmed and low on fuel. Hell at Mach 3.1 the plane would shake itself apart and God help the pilot that makes a slight rudder change at that speed. Mach 3.5 would be death for both the jet and its pilot. At Mach 13...I don't know super death? The explosion from a jet flying that fast hitting the deck would be felt for miles around it and at that speed...it's taking a nose dive. It would essentially become an armed meteorite that was filled with highly flammable jet fuel hurtling at the ground at over 10,000 miles per hour. I'm not a mathematician but I would love to know the newtons of that explosion. If it hit the ocean at that speed it would probably form a tsunami that kills thousands. Aaah the 1980's, where minor traffic incidents turn into explosions engulfing large swaths of cityscape. A time where a bullet fired from a small caliber handgun sends cars flying into the air like a bottle rocket and a pressboard table is all you need to stop any rifle wielding maniac from hitting you. It was a simpler time...:)

Gunship was the best. Sorry.

I agree, Gunship is a great game and it was one I considered for this video. But, in that game you're in an AH-64 Apache helicopter which is flown by the US Army. For this video I was trying to keep it to the Air Force. Also MicroProse wound up with 3 slots already, so there was that to consider. And yes, there was a comment from Sparky (that didn't make the final edit) that Ace of Aces is UK Royal Air Force :-)
