"There's Always Tomorrow" is a terrific underrated Sirk, as is "The Tarnished Angels."

"The Gunfighter" is terrific. Too few people know about that one. "In a Lonely Place" is terrific as well. "Singin' in the Rain" is great. It is the movie that made me love movies. "Shane" is my best film of 1953. Glad to hear you like "It's Always Fair Weather," a movie too few people know about.

The 1950s: 1950 - D.O.A. for me. (I haven't seen In a Lonely Place yet, really should get around to that) 1951 - Alice in Wonderland (One of my favourite Disney's - I watched it a LOT as a kid, I like the weirdness of it). 1952 - Singin' in the Rain. (I mean, c'mon, it's one of THE most iconic and great musicals of all time (I do also really like 'Bend of the River' and 'The Crimson Pirate') 1953 - The 5,000 Fingers of Dr.T. - More weirdness, but agreeably so, from Dr. Seuss. Far too little-seen. 1954 - Ooh...a three-way tie between 'Them!', 'Seven Samurai' and 'Rear Window'. Depending on my mood any one of them could be No.1. 1955 - Bad Day at Black Rock. 1956 - The Searchers, also. 1957 - 12 Angry Men. Yeah...kinda obvious. But it IS marvellous. Just edged out '3:10 to Yuma'. (Glenn Ford is one of my favourite Western actors) 1958 - The Fly...or 'The Blob'...or, if in a Western mood, 'The Big Country'. 1959 - Anatomy of a Murder. It MIGHT have been 'Rio Bravo' except I saw, and loved, 'El Dorado' first.

1950 - All About Eve _and_ Sunset Blvd. who could choose just one? 1951 - The Diary of a Country Priest 1952 - The Quiet Man 1953 - Lili (a sentimental choice - the first movie I ever saw!) 1954 - Rear Window 1955 - I Am a Camera 1956 - A Man Escaped 1957 - Witness for the Prosecution 1958 - Bell, Book and Candle 1959 - North by Northwest I agree Gloria Grahame is remarkable! 1950: All About Eve 1951: Scrooge 1952: Hans Christian Anderson (Is it the the best film of 51? No. Is it even the best musical? No. But it's still my favorite. I grew up watching it, and I still gives me all the feels. Kaye is my favorite comedian. The best thing about this movie is the scenes with the kids. Kaye was famously great with children- videos survive of his humanitarian travels for Unicef and you can see him entertaining the kids who didn't even share his language. It was so obvious that they loved him. And you can see that sincere warmth here, as well. Excellent music too.) 1953: From Here to Eternity 1954: Them! (Great year! When you said Godzilla, I thought I would surely choose it, since I'm a fan of franchises, and this kicks off one of the first and best. But I saw Them! on the list, and had to choose it, because it's one of my favorite films. Absurd monsters, great effects, lots of fun. Both are sci-fi horror classics, and great entries of the 50s nuclear panic era.) 1955: Oklahoma! 1956: The Bad Seed 1957: Old Yeller (Almost chose Jailhouse Rock. One of the great rock 'n roll films. The stylized set for the title song still looks great, and is a through line to the modern music video.) 1958: The Long Hot Summer (Tough year. Also love Auntie Mame, and Mon Oncle, but you can't beat a cast with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Orson Wells, and Angela Lansbury. Hollywood forever couple Newman and Woodward sizzle.) 1959: Sleeping Beauty You're right about how the 50's are mischaracterized. The birth of rock 'n roll and teenage culture (hoodlums) as a thing! Also, utter disregard for code. And what is going on with that "The Night of the Hunter" poster? It's hilariously awful. I assume that is Lilian Gish's head weirdly plopped into the background on the right?

Sunset Boulevard and Vertigo, two of most important Films in Hollywood History Sunset is just a perfect film, from the acting to Franz Waxman score.. I saw Sunset so many times.. Without never getting tired of it, just a perfect film to me. And.. Vertigo. Vertigo is not my favorite Hitchcock's movie but.. It's so unique!! It's almost an "avant-garde" film, so experimental.. Even it has almost 15 minutes without dialogs.. Only Music.. And, my God, what Music. It was a flop.. But Hichtcock got the film he wanted. Keep on posting and I look forward to watching your next Video 🌟🌟🌟

Maybe some readers might think "flop" means lost money. Vertigo did make money on its first run, just not nearly as much as many Hitchcock films. N ow it's considered one of the 2 or 3 greatest films ever made in some polls.

You're so right about people always assuming the 50s were just about bland conformity. The best 50s movies are so hard-hitting and still accessible and don't come off "old fashioned" at all. Plus the 50s gave us rock 'n roll, Jack Kerouac, Miles Davis, Marlon Brando, Stanley Kubrick, The Twilight Zone, etc, etc, so come on... :)

Like the 80's, the 50's were also a decade that was better for foreign movies than American. Most American movies from the time were miserably boring. 1959: Hiroshima Mon Amour H.M. 400 Blows 1958: Ashes & Diamonds H.M. Mon Oncle 1957: Wild Strawberries H.M. Throne of Blood 1956: The Burmese Harp H.M. Forbidden Planet 1955: Night and Fog H.M. Pather Panchali, All That Heaven Allows 1954: Seven Samurai 1953: [Crap] 1952: [Crap] 1951: The Day The Earth Stood Still 1950: Winchester '73
