hey taylor I just started practicing downhill and the root and hotpass and fill with 6010 I do great, but when I use the 5/32 pipeliner 8010 it seem to always get stuck for me on the side and bottom of the pipe. What are something than could cause that? I run it at 130 amps so I don’t believe that’s to cold.

tig welders think they some hot sh*t, realistically you can get by without doing any tig, plus who wants to be dealing with all those gasses, pedals, hoses, tanks, cups, filler rods, electrodes, settings and everything else it takes to tig, on top of that it’s the slowest process known to man. i could care less about the lgbtq colored rainbow they sometimes get on their welds 😂

Over the years I've welded with a lot of different processes, oxy acet, stick, mig, dual shield, tig, subarc, yata yata. My favorite rod is probably 7018 (so long as it's kept in a hot box). Some of my co-workers used to marvel at my overhead and vertical skills, to which I'd reply, it's all about mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter. No, seriously, if you are able to relax and not stress out about the position, it all becomes a lot easier, and your welds will reflect your state of mind.

I'm a small time mobile welder who absolutely loves stick. It's way easier to do things like "long arc" and manipulate the rod to do what you want it to... but.. self sheilded flux core makes short work of a job like that. It's definitely the rust. I'm assuming you were using e71t-11 and it is a lot like 7018 in the fact that it's way happier with a clean surface. It even gets angry when you try to weld over the slag it leaves behind whereas a 6010/8010 will eat through whatever tf. It seems to be fine with mill scale though. The beauty of e71t-11 is being able to get better penetration than a 6010 with a slightly higher tensile strength than a 7018. Granted, the 7018 has a higher yield strength at 81,000 psi with e71t-11 being 70,000 psi. Most people screw up by having the voltage too high. AWS classifies e71t-11 as a "spray type transfer", and they can achieve that with lower voltages because the wire is hollow. AWS says the optimal settings for .045 self shielded flux core is 17v and 170 wire speed. I just finished up a week long job shooting .045 flux out of a PrimeWeld Mig 180 at 18.2v and 177 wire speed with awesome results. I was rebuilding 1/4" thick i-beam columns and it was laying in smooth with a hiss. Very little spatter that were tiny bbs. The best part is time saved brother. I love stick but the flux is growing on me very quickly. Great video as always.

Funny thing you mention that about the flux core. I have used lots of flux core, both self sheilding and dual shield. Getting porosity was seldom a problem with the right wire and settings. Sometimes the odd worm track with self shielding flux core. But the only time i recall getting porosity is when there is dirt/sand on the metal or on magnetic pipe. But its also a different technique to weld flux core as compared to mig or stick.
@TaylorWelding
@TaylorWelding 4 ай бұрын
I don’t know what the deal is. It’s got to be the material.
@jmfarms3555
@jmfarms3555 4 ай бұрын
@TaylorWelding it could also be the wire or the settings. It runs on DCEN polarity. Opposite of mig. For self shielding you need a further stick out on the wire. The wire can absorb moisture from the air over time too which can cause porosity. So an old roll sitting in the welder can go bad over time. Plus not all flux core wire is created equally. Some manufacturers have good quality all the time while others have poor quality control. One roll will be good and the next 💩 and won't weld good no matter how hard you try.

Great videos Taylor. I’ve been welding for over 30 years. I rigged up in 06 and been pressure welding since then. I’ve done a few small pipeline jobs but mostly been doing facility new construction. I started teaching welding a few years ago and I love it. So I’m in the field for half the year and teaching the other half. Thankfully it’s been the cold half. lol. You have a great style and ease of explaining what you’re doing. You’re helping a lot of people in and out of the trade. Ive had a couple of stingers like the one you have. Amazon calls them European style electrode holders. I’ve been using the Stinger V for the past 10 years now. Love that stinger. I never asked because I knew you had most of your experience and knowledge developed on 6010, 7018, and 8010. Doesn't take long to get that if you're old-school and know how to "study a channel" (see/search videos on a channel with good content). But I'll listen and see what you say again. I've got a stack of 6010 (haven't burned it since high school) because this machine will run it, but right now there's an HF start issue on the TIG side and I'm not done sorting that out yet. Glad I have a 3-year warranty.

I have one thing for the beginners. That muscle control/memory for reaching out and welding or any other odd position you have to use isn't something you start out with. He makes it look easy because he is a vetran welder. It takes time and practice to do it confidently. What I'm saying is don't give up if it doesn't go well even after multiple sessions and situations. It WILL get easier over time. Just keep your cool and work at it.
