Somebody told me that welding downhill is illegal. Can you weld downhill? How does it compare to uphill? Will they both pass the bend tests? Watch this episode and find out!

All those “welders” who say you can’t weld downhill clearly never worked with sheet metal or thin gauge material. Some things you can’t weld up or you will blow threw. It really comes down to what the job calls for.

Yep, a lot of aluminum sheet work or thin steel sheet just needs to be done downhill, either it’s not possible because of blow-through, or because of distortion.

I'm an AWS CWI since December 2013. Whether you weld 'uphill', 'downhilll', your electrode size and selection, all the fitment, root gap criteria, welding gas selection, etc are prescribed in the WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) by the company's / client's welding engineers and metallurgists, after weeks, months, years of weld tests done in labs long before the project ever begins. The only time 'we' decide how we want to make the weld is in our garages at home.

I like your videos I'm semi retired, working two, maybe three days a week. Everyone agrees, it's a case of practice, practice, practice; that being said, I had bin out of the game for some time, and just like in athletics, you tend to loose that "edge" if you aren't doin' it every day. Recently, I ended up doing some work for a client that I had done a lot of work for in the 80's back then, I was welding(outdoors, stick) ten hours a day, six days a week I was amazed at how much better ALL my welds were back then, better than I do today! Vert up; down, etc. all perfect, no flux inclusions It was because I was doin' it all day, everyday.

Each company should have a welding procedure and it will tell you up hill or down hill and which rods to use and the diameter of the rod. It may be 1/8” for the bead and 5/32 for hot pass and what size to use for fill and cap. Usually it depends on pipe size and diameter which rod you use. The procedure will state the gap and lands and voltage and travel speed.

My father was a welder but he could also do everything else, shear, layout, braking, weld and polish. He learned the trade at East New York Vocational High School. He started working in the late 1940s. In the beginning he welded the custom electrical panels they used in New York Buildings. When I was a teen he was working in custom kitchen equipment. Later he got certification to weld the piping in nuclear power plants. hen we first moved to Florida he was relining the insides of cement trucks. That was probably the nastiest job he ever had. I worked with him as a helper before I was drafted. We'd go out and weld new ends on dish tables when a dish washing machine was being replaced. That meant Sunday night in the big hotels because that was the only time the kitchens were closed. He had a very good reputation and he was always getting calls from people wanting to hire him. He could design a kitchen and handle everything necessary. He even did synagogues with all the kosher requirements. It's too bad he never saw videos lie this one. That was one fancy welding machine. All he had to work with was a 90 Amp Lincoln welding machine. His rod work looked liked he'd used a Heliarc machine. I never had to beat something straight after he finished. There was another welder who was known or his speed. He'd weld two pieces into a 90 degree dish table with clamps everywhere on it. When he was done I'd take all the clamps off and the table was warped from the high heat used. Then I'd beat it to straighten it out. This instructor is a very good welder. That was a very pretty weld he did on the pipe. It made me think of my father.

Man what I wouldn't have given for that remote when I worked in the shipyard. Inverters could be several hundred feet away. And could require a 5 minute walk/ crawl through multiple spaces/decks to access. But absolutely correct. It absolutely depends on what regulations you have to follow. But it's a technique that is good to know regardless. Was one of the most failed tests. Usually due to lack of fusion. And like all techniques, practice, practice, practice.. Great video👍👍

If you’re a welder then you can do both when asked to do so and understand that they are a procedure that has a purpose but downhill isn't allowed on most sites in he UK

I had a freind at work who could tell you about the metal he was going to weld, what rods he was using, and why. This kid kinda reminds me of him.

I've been Stick Welding for about 2 years average about 20 hours of practice a week & still love peeling off slag to see what lies underneath! Great video BTW leaned a few things from it

When I started welding pipe it was downhill. Then they went to 7018 and pretty much dumped 6010 red rod. The gray 6010 has more nickel in it to go hand in hand with 7018.

I have used welding electrode rods in the past I called Fleet rods which are used for rooting pipe .which I would have the stinger on the minus and earth on the positive which the weld freezes quicker and the hot pass fill and cap swap them back over and used low hydrogen rods for that.

I removed a section of pipe done in 1933,it looked terrible, mostly spatter, rod was ancient, welding machines were just giant old generators,I cut coupons, bent them, they lost a 1/16th from erosion, they were done downhill, well they still passed after 50 yrs.of being in use at standard oil ,the inside top gets the most erosion if pipes arnt actually pressurized, they can have an air space, wish I would have had that machine, the sa250 with remote made thousands of welds.

Depends on the code. If the code says you can, do it. If not then get to it and make sure that weld passes inspection.
