I literally tripped over this channel by accident today and am very glad I did. You are my first "subscribed" channel. Your open, honest approach including identifying price is very helpful. I try to purchase a bourbon, scotch, Irish or American whiskey that I have never tasted before, with each trip to the liquor store. Couldn't agree more. I watch the Whiskey Vault/Tribe for shennanigans and a bit o' whiskey. I watch It's Bourbon Night for the blind tastings. I watch Ralfy and Mash & Drum for general knowledge and some tasting notes. But I watch SLB for honest opinions, because so many of the others are often too much like cheerleaders and are reticent to give an honest opinion for fear of upsetting a distiller/brand. But for a consumer, the BEST info is "THIS bottle is better than the crowd, so maybe try it first" or "THIS bottle is NOT worth it, so learn from my lesson, and don't make the same mistake." Keep up the good work!

Favorites as of today: Bourbon - Straight: Weller Full Proof Bourbon - Blended: Bardstown Fusion Series (2020) Rye: Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Irish: Red Spot (If you haven't tried it, it is great, albeit expensive at ~$350 a bottle) Japanese: Only have 3 bottles (Hibicki Harmony, Yamazaki 12 and Nikka Coffey Grain, which is my favorite) Scotch - Glengoyne 17 (now replaced with Glengoyne 18 year), although a close runner up would be Glenmorangie Signet. Great content, as always, Kurt!

@@slbdrinks Well, this just gives you lots of options for other episodes! Because some of these categories are kinda too big to just say X bottle is the best bourbon, etc. So yeah, best regular bourbon, best blended (probably going to be Barrell Craft Spirits), best finished (which is what you chose with the Bardstown), best cask strength, best rye, best cask strength rye, best blended scotch, best single malt, best peated, best grain, best finished, perhaps best by region (e.g. Speyside, Islay, Campbeltown, etc.). Great video. Two grand at least on that counter. It better be good!! I got into bardstown after the Chateau came out and never got to try one. I agree they make good stuff though and hope to find one someday! Birthday Bourbon 2018 For rye, if I want sweet, the Angels Envy is amazing but otherwise that JD is a big agreement from me I’ve never had super expensive Irish but have enjoyed Bushmills 16 and Redbreast 12 CS Hakushu 12 is my Japanese. Again, I haven’t had Yamazaki 18 or any age stated Hibiki but I like the little peat kick Hakushu has over Yamazaki. My biggest ever purchase was a Talisker 30 and that’s my favorite scotch that I have. Someday I’ll hopefully have a 20-something Laphroaig or Lagavulin that will beat it but I haven’t spent over $300 on a bottle yet so haven’t gotten to those.

I don't have categories, I judge by whether whiskey makes me feel wow! or meh.. So my absolutely top list is: Anything from small Finnish distillery Teerenpeli. They have a range for every taste and every bottle is just amazing. Anything from Taiwanese distillery Kavalan. Especially their Solist line, it has so much flavor, it just takes you by surprise. Any Octomore from Bruichladdich, some are better than the others, but overall they all are just mindblowing. And last but not least: a standard Maker's Mark that I forgot for a month in my trunk on a hot summer. The heat brought forth the unique roasted popcorn covered in honey and caramel flavor, and it's unforgettable. Shortly after I made 4 more bottles the same way to stock.

Kurt you are perfect at this because you are able to be humble in front of a camera. I only have American bourbon here at home and not a ton of them as you do and I am having a hard time calling one a favorite. I will cheat and just list what I think is good. Russells Reserve Single barrel, Old Forester 1920, Weller Antique 107, Knobb Creek 9 year 120 single barrel. All of those are in about the same range for ABV% but they each have an amazing flavor profile. That's just my choices based on what I've had. I haven't had any of the big guns so to speak but I'm OK with that because I enjoy the ones I mentioned and can usually get each. I would like to try the one called Kentucky Owl batch 9 or maybe it is 10 now. That just looks like something out of an old Western. I saw a bottle in Kentucky on the shelf at a bar but it was 75 dollars for an ounce and that is a pass for me......at least while my wife is sitting beside me....lol

Nice choices! You should try the BCS Seagrass. I’d be surprised if that isn’t one of the best ryes of year. I think some would argue that Hibiki 17 is actually better than the 21. Personal preference, but as far as desirability and collectibility, the 21 is the max daddy as you say. It is possible to get the Hibiki Blender’s Choice which is rumored to be about 15 years old. Since 17 and 21 have been discontinued, the blender’s choice would be an acceptable replacement given the shortage of true Japanese whisky. As for accessible whiskeys, the Nikka FTB and their single malts can still be had at retail and are just as superb! Keep in mind FTB is no longer a true Japanese whisky but I don’t see why that matters especially when it’s so good!

Would have to add that the seasonal component may influence if 17 or 21 is better. I tend to say 17 is best during the summer or fall when the bright fruit notes shine best while the baking spices and subtle peat/smoke of the 21 is best the winter or spring. To each his/her own, Slàinte!

The RB 27 is 400.00 plus. That’s A LOT of money and I absolutely get it. Now, with that being said the 27 yr is completely different than any other RB release. It has a higher ABV and the flavors really delve into berries, red raspberries. It’s a real treat but only the consumer can make the decision wether it’s worth it or not. I have had my bottle for a couple yrs now and only have a pour on special occasions.

Your description of hibiki is spot on ive only had the harmony but i feel the harmony has similar qualities not as rich im sure but its a great bottle. Pittyvaich 30 was nice from diago lost series really rum like and boozy fruit. Caol ila signatory 9 year pretty nice give me talisker 10 all day. I liked wee beastie as well those have been my stand outs but good ol talsker 10 and lagavulin 16 hold special place tough to beat. Bourbon - I would probably separate finished bourbon and regular bourbon since a lot of people don't consider finished whiskey true bourbon. George T. Stagg as number 1 for Bourbon. Rye - Totally 100 percent agree with the rye. Was going to be my suggestion. Irish - Not a big Irish fan, but agree with your pick again. Japanese - Haven't explored this category much Scotch - Unfortunately the best scotch releases are very hard to get in the US - My favorite is Octomore for peat and Springbank Longrow/local barley. Another insane one is Black Art.

Great video and great choices. 👍 I had a question I hoped you would have an opinion on. I started the hobby a year and a half ago and fell down the rabbit hole pretty far, pretty quick lol To the point where I have a lot of open bottles and I am worried about it potentially going bad. I drink a couple times a week, a little at a time and I honestly think it'll take me over a year to get through everything I have opened thus far. What do you think of a bottle having been opened for 2 years? Does it go bad? Change the flavor in a negative way? Thank you in advance for any advice/info 😀

I have researched this a bit also because, like you, I have plenty opened as well! I actually have a few that’s been opened for three yrs and truthfully I cannot tell a difference at all. I have heard that as the bottle gets closer to empty over time the exposure to air will moderately change the flavor. I purchased some small brown apothecary bottles and will decant the whiskey into a smaller bottle with less surface area exposed to the air. If your concerned, especially with expensive whiskey, give it a try.

Curt, I've been looking for anything Bardstown since seeing it on your channel...so far, no luck here in Alaska. It's a shame, since they literally come out of the same whiskey home as many other great distilleries...and, looking at their list of bourbons/whiskies, there's not a single one I wouldn't be willing to try. Leaving out Canadian whiskey almost seems like a purposeful troll. And there’s enough Indian and Tennessee whiskies that they should have their own categories. Meanwhile, it’s difficult to find New Zealand whiskies over in the US, but I always bring back several every time I visit the islands. There are some top notch whiskies being made in New Zealand. As for me, my favorites are: Bourbon: Henry McKenna Bottled in Bond Single Malt Scotch: Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or Blended Scotch: Johnnie Walker Green 15yo Canadian: Forty Creek Confederation Oak or Crown Royal Extra Rare Irish: Redbreast 15yo Tennessee: Dickel Single Barrel 15yo Rye: Wild Turkey Rye 101 Indian: Paul John Bold Japanese: Hibiki 12yo New Zealand: Dunedin Doublewood

@@slbdrinks New Zealand and Welsh whiskies are essentially Scotch not made in Scotland. Far closer to the real thing than Japanese which has their own characteristics. But Indian whisky definitely has its own characteristics. Traditionally it is made with the addition of molasses to either the grain malt or even already made Scotch from Scotland. So it’s kind of midway between a Scotch and a rum. But most of the newer brands including almost all that get imported to the US are wholly grain based and sometimes like the excellent Paul John Brilliance made up entirely of one grain (barley in this case). I’d be most interested in really exploring the older molasses based products but as I mentioned they’re tough to come across in the US.
